Transmission swap in a Baja? What would I need
Alright
So I'm having doubt on both 5speed Turbo baja's that I found for sale at a decent price.. one had a salvage title and the other one isn't the color/optiomilage/combo I really wanted. How hard would it be to swap an Auto Turbo baja to a 5speed? I'm not talking how hard to do it physically but what parts need to be changed and do they have to come from a baja or some legacy GT parts could be used? I'm guessing the tranny could be from a legacy GT. What about the Axels, drive shaft, rear diff, would the automatic ones be good with the 5speed tranny? Does the Automatic Turbo Baja also have the rear LSD? Other parts I guess I'd need would also be a cluster, pedals, slave/master cylinder, ecu? Thanks for your help Alex

It can promise you it would be allot cheaper to just get a manual baja. What color combo are you looking for? I think the manual was on available in certain colors.
So far I've seen blue, grey, and red. |

In 2004, 5 speeds were available in White, same color as mine.
Keep it under 90, folks! |

Well I`m looking at Blue or Black Turbo + leather + sunroof + 5spd + ac I`d also like a tow package but it`s not a must.
So far I found 3 in my price range 1 black, 1 blue, 1 red and silver. I was going to buy the black one but found out it was a salvage title. the red one has 78,000 more miles then the black one and is selling for the same price no clue about the interior and no tow package. the blue one is automatic but has every other option I need. Problem is, I have a low budget of about 10kus maximum since once Imported into Canada thats about $15-16k when the taxes, fees and inspections are paid. All the ones I listed above were 9800-9900. I;m looking all over the US, I don`t mind traveling. Last edited by Ti Pit; 06-26-2009 at 10:34 PM. |

In the US, leather was only available with the automatic, IIRC.

Are you sure? Both the 5 speed I found both had leather in them ..
is there suck a thing as full leather and half leather? I know for sure it`s not full cloth because I saw those in base baja`s and I hate that interior. As a little insider info, I`m buying the baja to replace my stolen WRX. I hope Ill be able to enjoy it just as much. |

If u find a wrecked wrx u can pull everything from that all the bajas use the same manual transmission from all wrxs 04 and up the bugeye transmission had sti ra gearing in random models U could even put the sti six speed if u wanted to but the 5spd is better suited for everything and u wouldn't need a cluster in all it would be easier to paint a car than swap trannys so it's ur call

Would I need to change the rear diff, axels and driveshaft or would they be good for the swap?

also the bajas and 2.5 gt's have almost nothing on common the bajas are most closley related to the 04-05 sti motor with an 06-07 setup td04, small intercooler, with the same tranny as 04-07, and highly detuned making only 11 pounds of boost from the factory

I was able to add the leather, power heated seats to the Manual. It's not too terrible. I can describe the details if you need. I even added the heated mirrors, likely a must up in CA.
The other options, sun roof, AC are standard. And the tow package is super easy to bolt on |

I'm actually doing an STI 6 speed swap in my '06 Baja Turbo. To do a 5 speed swap here is the list:
1: tranny+shifter linkages and shifter assembly 2: clutch+flywheel along with clutch fork, bearings and all hardware 3: clutch master cylinder with reseroir, line, and slave cylinder for 5 speed 4: 5 speed standard drive shaft 5: rear diff (R160) to suit the gearing of the front diff or a ring and pinion swap 6: standard baja wiring harness 7: ability to flash a standard baja map onto the ECU and being able to tune out the couple CELs that will arise 8: 5 speed crossmembers as well as all bushings and transmission crossmember mount 9: depending on the year tranny you get you MAY need front axles 10: the skills, time, and money to do the swap! The WRX 5 speed will be a better choice than the LGT (to my knowledge) but the STI 6 speed will be even better! If you want specifics, just PM me, I can give you the list seeing as how i will be preceding with the STI 6MT swap in a week and a half, I'm waiting on the parts to arrive at my doorstep haha |

I know it is a lot of work, but it would be great if you could post the lists and get it "stickied". |

hmm given your list. I wonder if swapping the 6 speed into my 5 speed manual would be easier?

He forgot to post the pedals, and slave cylinder that need to plumbed in. You basically have to rebuild the whole car.

What I did was bought the auto turbo, the exact one that I wanted, and planned to do a 5 speed swap, down the road. If you keep the car at stock power level, you can MAYBE get away with the 5 speed. It is sooooo freakin fragile. That is why everyone calls it the "glass tranny" I HIGHLY recommend shlling out the few extra clams and getting the 6 speed. Kingof, it looks like I did forget the pedals, I just did that swap from an 04 STI pedal set, almost direct bolt in ALMOST. I am working on "master swap list" for these kids of swaps, it will take me a few days because there is SO much detail haha. With a 5 speed swap, you're looking at around 3K-3.5K of parts with good milege on an 05/06 or so tranny. Labor will be around 1.5K leaving you 4.5-5K in the hole. A 6 speed swap is about 4K (with good deals) and about 1.5K install, leaving you at about 5.-6K. I definitely recommend going with a PROFESSIONAL install, not midas, or any place like that. Here in CT we have East Coast Swappers, they are #1 in the whole swapping industry here on the east coast, they are extremely knowledgeable and fair priced. To me its common sense, the 5 speed WILL break at some point down the road, I guarantee it. With a good install, good parts, the 6 speed will outlast your car (with out absurd abuse) Any other questions feel free for anyone to chime in! I have been looking up info on this for 6 months, I have a lot of knowledge! |

if you're not in a rush and can hang around for a few days I will work on that "master swap list" and will have ALL the details that are involved. 5MT to 6MT won't need a new wiring harness, it won't need an ECU reflash, it won' need the clutch master cylinder, line, pedals, but it will need a slave (I think, give me a few days on that too) you won't need the shifter trim inside of the car, you will need anew driveshaft (from a 4EAT) etc, there are a few differences. It will be cheaper and definitely easier. |

yea i was stopped getting off the interstate. Lady in front starts to go, so I followed. I start watching oncoming traffic then i see red out of the corner of my eye. She STOPPED! I did the best i could but still hit her at like 10mph.
I went up under her bumper so almost no damage to them. Mine is like 4300 in damage for the new hood, bumper, light and fender, and 3 structural pieces underneath that need to be replaced (gotta love spot welds!) Amusing part is as a i recall traffic was just leaving the red light.. 3 lights away and the alabaaaama driver didn't think she could make it. le sigh So either way I am screwed since I hit into her it goes against me, but the cop was nice and wrote it up as a traffic incident not out of state accident. |
