Oh ha, ok cool. Well lets just keep it positive in here! And we all gotta learn finesse and control somewhere right? The track seems like a good place away from other public areas.

I agree ^^^ Everyone indeed has to start somewhere and learn. I'm sure you guys didn't start out as Ken Block or Colin McRae prodigies and please don't take offense to that.

For me personally it was my first time experiencing driving like that and although it may have looked amateur at best I learned a lot just from those couple months of practicing and learning what my car could and could not handle. I have every intention of learning even more and bettering my driving skills. On a side note I will state that I was (correct me if I'm wrong) the only driver out there that did not damage my car in any way. Came close a couple of times that's for sure but managed to get out of there without a single scratch. : )

I can understand people out throwing their cars around in an open non public area. It's fun. I get that.

I can understand that if you are just starting out, that the finesse of an experienced driver is not going to be there. I'm 45. I've been on motorcycles since 7, was driving tractors on a big farm at 10, a farm truck at 12 and on the public roads since 15. I've been driving in snow states (Alaska, Wyoming and Washington) for the past 20 years. We raced motorcycles on the ice as a family to keep our riding skills up between motocross seasons for several years. I've been there and done it. Nuff said on that.

What I was trying to allude to, and what seemed to be missed was that the person filming was needlessly placing himself in harm's way to get his shot. When cars with inexperienced drivers are sliding towards you, don't be anywhere near a danger zone. You can't move fast enough to get out of their way, especially in deep snow. You can't gauge their speed very well looking though a camera. You can't possibly know how they are going to react when they themselves don't know what they are doing in the first place.

I'm not saying that I don't have things to learn myself or that I'm perfect every time, but I've done pretty well in competition and don't tend to tear up equipment. I'd like see you guys come down to Anchorage and maybe we could set up a little clinic. I know Jake, Kent, Clint and myself have a good bit of knowledge to pass on to those who are receptive. I'd be open to do this for the Anchorage crews over the Christmas holidays as well.

Something that goes on at our organized events is that a trained safety steward is present and the whole show is about keeping everyone safe first and foremost. Everyone still has fun. No one has fun if cars get broke or worse, if people get hurt. My concerns are for your safety. My wish is that you guys use common sense and stay safe, that you keep from damaging your cars and gain skills in the process. I 've worked for over two decades as a paramedic and have seen my fair share of senseless tragedy all because no one intervened.

Now you know!

Thank you for your genuine concern Nomad. It's cool that you are willing to pass on your knowledge to the younger generation. I like to make more trips down to anchorage and meet up with some of you guys. Possibly this spring but most def in the summer. Gotta get the car tuned! Thanks again for your words.

Enough about always coming to Anchorage. That a good suggestion, but you guys should come up here and play around on the ice track. Maybe try it yourself.

It would be fun to get pointers and tips from Nomad "the seasoned pro" , on a track that we can practice on up here. If it goes well, maybe even run a quickest lap battle or something like that. Make a day or weekend out of it.

Yeah that would be really cool. Specially the lap times for sure! As for the anchorage crew coming up here for such an event will be highly unlikely in my eyes. That practice track we have ain't ****e lol.

We have an established track out on Big Lake. Once some snow falls, we and the snowmachiners will get things set up here. We have an oval and a road course. There is also a rumor of a Fur Rendevous ice race here on a lake in Anchorage. Time will tell on that. Hopefully some information on that will be soon forthcoming from the appropriate club.

While I won't say it will never happen, it is not likely that I'll be driving to Fairbanks in the foreseeable future to play on the ice with you fine people. I hope the point I was trying to make was taken in the light it was intended. Just want everyone to be safe, have fun and continue to develop their skill set, as well as protect their investment.

Now that would be a cool meet... go up on a Friday, play on Saturday, come back on a Sunday.

Who's going to make this happen...

This cold weather blows! I got back to town yesterday and went to go to the store and I had to drive around the block slowly until my tires were molded back to the round shape from being square after sitting for 3 weeks in this bullsnit!!

Ahh yes the Fairbanks ice track. It's great if you are on a quad or a dirt bike. Gets pretty old pretty fast.... Going in an oval for about 10 minutes is all it takes for me to get bored.

The track at Big Lake is plowed mainly for cars correct?

There are usually 3 different tracks on BIG LAKE. The motorcycle and quad guys have their own smaller oval in one area of the lake.

The snowmachiners and the AASCLC http://www.aksportscarclub.org jointly carve out their own larger oval out in the main body of the lake. Usually this race is run for several early season rounds until the driver pool builds enough skills by racing each other to get comfortable. Later in the season, a road course is laid in that sometimes incorporates the oval or portions of it. Sometimes the road course is unable to be utilized due to lack of the appropriate number of flaggers. On an Oval you basically only need 2***8722;3 groups of flaggers (one on each end of the course at the entrance to the turn and then the start/finish line). Exponentially more flaggers are needed on a road course with multiple turns.

It would be good to get more people involved, especially the car community close by in Anchorage. Last year we had a two day/night event with spot lights that was spectacular. Best time I've ever had racing in a car. It would be one you guys would definitely want to come down for.

With stories like this, why would even YOU want to go out. It's so cold even an angel broke a wing.

Cold snap hampers ice carvers in Interior Alaska

http://www.adn.com/2012/12/04/271282...e-toll-on.html

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA - Frigid cold in Interior Alaska is taking a toll on North Pole's Christmas in Ice event.

Temperatures of 40 below zero are hampering artists trying to craft their ice masterpieces. They are having to deal with broken tools and snapped electrical cords. Even some of the exhibits are reacting negatively to the cold.

Christmas in Ice chairman Keith Frye told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://is.gd/ly2b9f) that one carver had a wing on his angel break. He says the carver brought the wing inside and warmed it up before gluing it together.

Brice says anytime the weather gets below minus 20, ice becomes a lot more brittle.

The park opened on Saturday. A multiblock ice carving competition will be held Dec. 9-12.

this cold snap is unseasonably early. next week is supposed to be above zero. kinda sucks since so many things broke down this week. good for making nice thick ice though.

I guess what I was sort of getting at above was it would be sweet to have some seasoned ice track participants come up here and work with us. find a good route on our track to build skills. perhaps to get competitive and join you guys for your races in big lake. I doubt there is enough interest to get a real race organized up here. but we could all benefit from some driver modifications.

Well I have a simple logical fix for all you thin blooded southerners. Don't come up when it's --40 come up when the temp suits you more. Like in late February or march. It's a tough place to live for a portion of the year but its not that cold THE WHOLE OF WINTER. So what it comes down to is excuses excuses lol.

On another note I do like the idea of a ice track day/weekend. I still miss the 4+ mile tracks we used to have on the south lathrop pond.
