Don't get me wrong, very lively fun car for sure. 43-50,000+ though B E F O R E the inevitable dealer markups.

WRX outdone in all acceleration metrics, top speed is TBD as it was not measured (and somewhat useless), GR brakes seem underwhelming, skidpad tire test goes to WRX. WRX is cheaper, though, so you can console yourself with the money you saved as you study the back end of the GR after losing any contest of speed.

After reading the R&T review, the GR seems like the spiritual successor of the 04 STi: 300 horsepower AWD drivetrain paired with a rental car grade interior.

Both are more than plenty quick to have fun. I can post the C&D test of my 2015 WRX I had, it was nearly identical to this GR. In a world dominated by autotragic CUV lease mobiles, cars like these are a breath of fresh air.

I totally concur. Even the rental car grade interior is outstanding as it means the $ went into the chassis, powertrain, clutch, and all wheel drive system.

in the end i dunno which is better.

there is a youtube vid comparing the yaris gr to the 2022 wrx. the final conclusion is the wrx leaves a lot on the table with its 2.4 motor. the 3 cylinder yaris is more or less maxed.

off the shelf yaris (and corolla) gr are better track cars (i think).

but...

you can modify the wrx suspension and assuming you can tune the wrx you will get more out of the wrx modified than the yaris/corolla gr stock. also as rare as the corolla gr is will tuning even be available.

the corolla gr will be very hard to get and expensive. the wrx will be easier to get and cheaper.

No. There are guys pushing 472 hp on a G16 and the heads lifted, so there's more to be had on the internals. The 3 cylinder is absolutely not "maxed."

Because they got that power out of that car doesn’t mean anything. How long has it lasted without issues? how reliable has it been? How long can it realistically last with those power figures? Etc etc etc….anyone can easily also link that Crosstrek with Ascent motor that made 500+…..

Theoretically speaking, from a purely tuning perspective, the WRX has the advantage. It’s just an extra cylinder inescapable fact.

I bought the WRX but I think the GR Corolla is fantastic. Toyota Warranty Support, Manual, Hatch, ability to Push up to 500hp (Thousands of dollars spent later lol - Well goes for both cars), AWD, maybe don't like the price too much. I sortve wish they made both the cars look nice with good lines even from like a base.
A Base 3 Series still looks good and doesn't look (Downgraded) on the outside (Maybe less bumper lights sure) but still. Thats why I think the 86/BRZ did so well. Because they look great! Willing to bet the Auto dropped in the GR will Blow the SPT WRX out of the water as well. But yeah hiking shoe - Thats accurate

Absurd? More like certifiable. The guys at Motive took the G16 to 500 wheel and that’s when the head lifted. They have really beat the car up too. Clutch dumps, track driving, drag strip times. Name it. Engine has been a rock.

Another shop has closed decked the G16 and running 900 wheel.

The Boobaru crap here is just off the charts. Mods should have already locked the thread. Once all them clowns get out of the clown car and the three ring brand loyalty circus begins, well they get juvenile…..over a car, a competitor.

ok. here's my deal with the corolla gr and the wrx. (of which i have neither and prolly wont end up with either .. but anyway).

i'd buy a yaris gr if it was available in the us at least at msrp (no markup) but that aint happening because its not coming here

i'd prolly by a corolla gr if i could get one with the diffs and at msrp which prolly isnt gonna happen.

i could buy a 2022-23 wrx, spend a bit on the suspension, add a turbo back exhaust (i think one already exists) add a cobb access port or the other piggy back thing and get enough hp/torque to make me happy (i would not expect a ton)..

i would prefer an sti (no more being made).

so the bottom line is your gonna have to compromise somewhere if you want some sort of a performance oriented awd car (not counting suvs, jeeps, trucks etc). you either spend a lot of money (maybe get an audi rs3 if you can find one) or you settle for a bit less...

btw one of my cars is a 2003 wrx modified and tuned by me, runs e85 or 93 (not a flex, i switch back and forth on access port). it has a nice bump in hp without being overboard. i bought it new in 2003. i'd like to get a new version of that car at a reasonable price. there arent many options.

as to the corolla gr. 1.6 L motor may be the cats ass. i expect there will be some limited aftermarket thngs but you aint gonna get 400+ hp without spending a bunch of money. you can prolly approach that level on a 2022-23 wrx for a lot less. thats my guess....

Yeap, the 3 pot is already running a ton of boost and is pretty much stressed out of the box. The FA24 has a ton left on the table.

You guys keep saying "stressed" and "maxed," yet tuners are pushing 37 psi into the thing and getting almost 500 horsepower on stock internals. It's not "stressed," it's not "maxed," it's a good-maybe-great motor from a manufacturer that's decided to make the kind of cars Subaru used to make. It is possible, and worth considering, that a company with 10x the revenue of another might be able to make better engines, both per-liter of displacement and overall.
