I'm all about privacy too, but I'm with Justy on this one.

There are a lot of reasons for both sides, but if you're doing nothing wrong, what's the problem? Im surprised it took Subaru this long to put this thing in... how many threads here have people saying "putting it back to stock before going to the dealer", or "I never pushed the car but it went kaboom", or "can the dealer see if I flashed a new map?". Everyone knows driving hard and modding is a pay to play thing, but many don't want to pay when what they've done goes wrong.

The majority of Subaru owners, and all brands actually, can benefit from this monitoring. We all know those people who have no clue about cars, and these notifications can help them be a better car owner, not to mention let mechanics know what sensors went off or conditions led to a breakdown.

In any case, the paranoid can unplug and be happy.

That being said though, I'm in Canada and starlink isn't on our Subarus (or tpms). haha

Here ya go. Received email this morning after installing my winter wheels and tires, yesterday, and if the TPMS light AND the yellow information 'i' isn't enough...

"*We’ve been notified via STARLINK™*that the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light is on in your 2017 WRX.*

We can help you with that.*

The TPMS light indicates one or more of your tires is underinflated. You should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Underinflation reduces fuel efficiency and tire life, and may affect the vehicle’s handling and stopping ability. For a quick reference on tire pressure, watch this video. If the TPMS light does not turn off after you add air, you should contact your Subaru Retailer right away."

New Subaru owner as of ~2 months ago --

I started getting stupid emails from Subaru every few days informing me that my "monthly vehicle reports" are available. I wasn't keen on them having access to this information and learned that Subaru won't disable it (even if you ask them to). Ultimately, I disconnected the 3 antennae from the back of the aptly named "data collection module" beneath the factory head unit. The Starlink light is now red (instead of green), but I had no intention of using it as I have a cell phone.

Think about it. A corporation (albeit, a corporation that makes cool cars) has access to your GPS data, vehicle data, and onboard computers on a dedicated 4G / LTE data connection to AT&T. What if my account gets hacked and someone tries to unlock / start the car, or it becomes advantageous for Subaru / its contractors to monetize this data? The possibilities for misuse are endless and we can't opt out its collection, nor do we have anything to gain by it.

Theft recovery is also a gimmick. The GPS antenna is very easy to access (it's behind the instrument console and can be reached by removing 6 Phillips head screws. If I were a bad guy who's capable of boosting a Subaru in the first place, I'd probably want to ensure I wasn't tracked! The maintenance intervals also completely annoy me. I don't need my car to tell me when to maintain it. I'm already on it.

Getting an email is far less intrusive than what Ford does. When my mom was in Florida for the winter, I drove her 09 Fusion. Periodically, the radio is interrupted and "Would you like a vehicle health report?", then silence. No....I want my ******* radio back. There is no report even if I hit whatever button indicates "yes". I confirmed with my mom that she gets nothing.

At least your Subaru doesn't talk to you. Block their email address and move on. Or remote power the thing and pack it with checked baggage when you take an airplane trip. I'm sure they'll be happy to see your Subaru going 525 mph through Lake Erie.

When I took delivery of my 2018 STI I requested that the dealer not set up StarLink as I wasn't interested in it. I received an email confirmation titled "Subaru Vehicle Delivery Checklist" and it confirmed they did not enroll me in the StarLink trial. I have never received an email about the status of the car, maintenance, etc, and I've had the TPMS light come on a few times due to New England spring days with it being 50 in the morning and 80 in the afternoon causing tire pressure to get too high. Here's what the section of the email looks like:

Quote:
Registration and Appointment

My Subaru Registration ***10004; Enrolled

SUBARU STARLINK Registration ***9747; Declined

First Service Appointment ***10004; Initiated
I'm sure it's still phoning home with a limited amount of data, but at least I'm not getting the creepy emails others have been receiving. Subaru can absolutely cancel your StarLink trial though, and after the year trial is over you shouldn't receive emails anymore.

I bet the vehicle recovery works more times than having a criminal smart enough and capable enough to get in and disable it. We had a thug shove a salesman down and stole a Legacy right off the lot in broad daylight. Most likely a gang initiation. We IMMEDIATELY activated an account and located the vehicle and gave that to police. Police were at the car within 40 minutes(only cause the slow response of the police. Probably thought it was gone and didn't know we had located it. We had it located in under 20 min.) Gimmick, sure. Lots of people getting it to keep tabs of it when it's their teenager/college student in it. You may not need it to tell you when to maintain it and a lot of folks don't; but, many many people like that feature. Like I've said in this thread before, keep the tin foil hats on. If those lights(your's being red now) are not on, Subaru doesn't care about you. You aren't paying them to.

Interesting. We may be buying a new Crosstrek and my first inclination was to stick with a 2.0i where we avoided starlink. I see that it's a pay service after the first year, so I doubt that they're going to track anything when I don't sign up to pay.

Saying that the antenna is easy to get to isn't really true. It's only 6 screws, but a thief likely isn't going to take the time to get those 6 screws out. He's going to store it in a neighborhood street somewhere and wait a week to see if it's got a locator, then take it to sell it or parts of it.

Lojack was the go to system before all the onstar and starlink came around. I had it in 2 cars and stumbled upon them very easily. They would be pretty easy for a thief to find and I'd submit easier than getting out 6 screws. The ones in my car were simply lifting carpet up where if I were a thief, I'd snip a few wires and that would be the end of the lojack. Or to be fun, attach it to a delivery truck and keep it activated.

My one and only sales pitch for the current Starlink Connect Services is the airbag deployment notification. It will call for help the moment an airbag deploys. Being a firefighter, I have responded to severalmany accidents that the occupant was unconscious when we got there. Someone else came across the accident and called it in. No telling how long they had been there(2-3am time periods) and in need of help. For $13 a month, or better if you get multiple years, wouldn't that be kinda a no-brainer? "No, cause I won't get in an accident". Yeah. That drunk that T-bones you and then runs from the scene cause he/she ain't hurt and your there bleeding to death with a head wound. Ask me how I know. Now, I don't get THAT detailed when I pitch it and always tell them the time period they have to think about it.

If it would only phone home when I send a signal out to locate it (stolen vehicle locator) or when collision sensors detect a collision where airbags deploy, then that'd be fine. But I don't want it collecting OR sending data otherwise.

Unfortunately that's a programming thing, not a "clip these wires here but not the others" thing, and not modifiable except by whatever company creates the Starlink software iteration for Subaru.

When you use a credit card, use an EZ-Pass, travel with your cellphone (which is usually on), use the Internet, etc, you are effectively being tracked.

Starlink is both a safety tool and a marketing tool.

Wear a hat, a hoodie, no cellphone, no credit or bank cards, no e-mail, and pay with cash only, and disable Starlink or any other similar items and so-forth and you may more-or-less be free.

If a dealership or SOA are going to use Starlink and/or the so-called black-box to determine whether your warranty claim is valid or not, then let them. They have a right to protect themselves from warranty fraud (theft). Do they not?

If you don't like the fact that Starlink sends a notice to you then inquire as to whether or not this portion of the package can be suppressed. If not, then start advocating for it to be a feature. Otherwise, don't subscribe.

STARLINK SAFETY PLUS Package includes:

- Automatic Collision Notification

- SOS Emergency Assistance

- Enhanced Roadside Assistance

- Diagnostic Alerts

- Maintenance Notifications

- Monthly Vehicle Health Report

STARLINK SAFETY PLUS & SECURITY PLUS Package includes:

- SAFETY PLUS Package (from above)

- Stolen Vehicle Recovery

- Vehicle Security Alarm

- Remote Lock/Unlock

- Remote Horn and Lights

- Remote Vehicle Locator

Greetings.

Did some searching here for using starlink to recover your stolen vehicle, but it just seems to be people complaining about the service as seen in this thread.

I would like to know if anyone has used the recovery service to get their stolen vehicle back and how was the experience?

My 1 year trial is up for renew and was considering getting the package that has the vehicle recovery. Don't much care about the other stuff.

SO, has anyone used it? Good / bad experience?

Thanks!

Read up in this thread. One poster relayed a story about where a thief pushed over a salesman in the lot and stole a Legacy right in plain view. They used stolen vehicle recovery to locate the car, and vehicle was recovered in under an hour.

yeah, I read that, but it's one story.

Was just hoping to see more than just 1 experience as I also saw where someone in the mountains couldn't connect to the service. So, yeah, just thought there would be more stories out there.

Guess subies aren't getting stolen that much?

The service requires connection to a cell tower. It's not a satlink, but cellular. So no cell tower, no phoning for help.

Probable cause, and because it feels too close to "presumed guilty until proven innocent". A little like the car is wearing an ankle monitor.

It's unnerving to have your car initiate complaints about warning lights being lit and reminders concerning maintenance - what happens if an independent shop does the maintenance items (or I do them myself) instead of handing them off the dealership's service dep't? Will Starlink recognize that the services were in fact performed?

Being intermittently locatable is one thing and all but unavoidable these days. Being tracked with the potential for continuous location and speed monitoring, possibly in real time, is something else again and clearly invasive.

Starlink is different because its totally possible someone doesn't know their coordinates are being logged by the cell tower the Starlink system is pinging. Car owners aren't aware their cars even have a cell tower transponder.

They have a right to protect themselves, but they dont have a right to your personal movements, the times, distances, speeds and ways in which you drive your car. Starlink also records cell tower IDs, which is approximate to locations and times. These are all tracked by Starlink. This is all personal information, that a person has the right to keep private if they so decide.

Its not about unsubscribing to Starlink emails, but about not being passively tracked without having opted-in to the sercurity benefits or other services they offer.

If you read the fine print, Starlink data can also be sold to 3rd partys for advertising purposes. So if you're always showing up at a weed dispensary at 2am on Friday nights, the cookie shop nextdoor can start using that information to sell ads to you that'll appear in your Instagram feed.

This argument is about our right to decide what to keep private about our movements and use of our personal property.

With auto-opt-in, Subaru has effectively decided for us:
  1. Your movement data is Subarus
  2. Your usage patterns are Subarus
  3. We Subaru can do what we like with this information, including selling it.

My point is that this data is ours, and we can decide what do do with it: Either keep it private, or sell it ourselves. Most importantly is our right to decide for ourselves.
