Default Winter is on it's way! Preparing your subie?

so i walked into 49 degrees this morning when i left for work thinking 'its kind of cold for september', and considering it was 40+ degrees warmer a few short weeks ago, it might be in everyone's best interest to start preparing for oct/nov "winter".

SO, MAIC, what do you do to prepare for winter? fluid change and switch to winter wheels/tires? shovel and kitty litter in your trunk? salt/sand bags? a winch? tow straps? tell us your secrets

dude you have a WRC winning AWD-drivetrain. all you need is a set of decent snow/winter tires. thats it. its really that easy

i have a wide sticky set of wheels and tires for spring-fall
and
a set of skinny winter set of wheels and tires for winter

I swap wheels and tires and then drive like nothing ever changed. But I bet i will take it easier on my new legacy versus my old impreza.

Ever since I've had a license, I do nothing to prepare for the winter. I just keep driving the car like a NoVA jackass and hope for the best.

And pray that I'm not on RE92s.

From TireRack:

"The Potenza RE92 is Bridgestone's High Performance All-Season tire that became popular because of its extensive use as Original Equipment on sports cars, sporty coupes and performance sedans. The Potenza RE92 is designed to combine a smooth quiet ride, predictable handling and all-season traction, even in light snow."

I never really took precautions in the past, but now that my wife is pregnant I actually took the time to buy a used set of winter wheels with blizzaks in AUGUST. Hey... gotta get the right setup when the market is right.

Also considering a light upgrade... stock Bugeye headlights don't hold a candle to HID retrofits.

Throw the 14"s back on the OBS with ContiExtreme Winters. This will be my first time running those tires. Looking forward to it. Before I had Hankook Icebears during the Snowpocalypse on my STi, and they did great.

My winter rims and tires will continue to sit in the shed for several months. I usually throw a blanket or sweatshirt in the truck just in case. My Forester on the other hand rocks tow rope, shovel and other assorted goodies.

Ok, I'm a winter noob. I was living in FL for the first 6 years after I got my license, then in the Carolinas where winter seems to seldom happen, then over in Okinawa, Japan, which is about like Miami. So . . . what are winters like up here? I feel like an idiot having to ask, but oh well.

I was wondering if I should just grap a set of the DWSs, but found a set of RS 6 spokes with Graspic DS-3 for $400...can't pass that deal up!

about 3 years ago: snowpocalypse with 600 feet of snow in an hour, icy roads and death if you drove -but not if you have a subie :3 i was driving columbia pike by myself until an intersection with a WRB STI. we stopped. did the fonz. laughed. kept driving. everyone else was walking through the snow carrying food/beer. no power.

2 years ago: light snow, maybe 3 inches at best

1 year ago: whats snow? barely touched 32 degrees all winter.

this year: ??? anyone have a good farmers almanac or prediction?

Last edited by gaedikus; 09-20-2012 at 01:02 PM. Reason: but not if you have a subie :3

I did the same with my old Saabaru with Snow tires during that storm. I was able to climb Carlin Spring Rd's hill no problem.

when it drops below 40 or so the 215 Blizzaks will go on, mounted on Motegi Racing Mr118's. Best traction I've ever witnessed on slick ice. The car currently sits with a one finger gap but that may change as winter comes and any big snows and I will crank her up again. 2006 so I dont have to worry about rust other then the brake calipers which have a tendency to rust and a good cleaning with brake cleaner keeps those preserved. Probably will relube the wheel bearings after the winter as they are starting to portray some symptoms of wear and the heavy salting they do will need to be cleaned out. Thats all that I can think of now for the winter.

Also about the farmer's almanac they were predicting pretty good snow 6-10 inches a few times last year so that is pretty much invalidated in my books. haha

I do nothing. Suby isn't the daily. Driven on nice days and that's it. Although if we do see decent snow I'll be tempted to go out for some donuts

I got Hankook Icept Evo winter tires from www.discounttiredirect.com. Mounted them on my OEM rims since I bought summer rims and tires.
