How much exhaust wrap do I need to wrap a gp moto header?
Just like the i tsays. I just want ot know how much. A store tried to to tell me that I would need 2 1 inch roles and 1 2 inch role(each role being 50 ft), plus the clips and the protective spray. That total came to a little over $100. I might as well have it coated if I could find a place.

That's a big header so I would guess 100ft. After you add in the spray and the clips, wrapping isn't cheap either.

Una is right, it's not cheap, but it is still cheaper than coating and you don't have to send your parts to anybody (what a pain in the arse). I wrapped my GTSpecII header and I needed about 3/4 of a 50 ft roll so you might be able to get away with one roll for your header. I wrapped my uppipe, top part of my DP, and my entire header with about 1.75 rolls (50' rolls). I bought two spray cans, two rolls of wrap, & the wrap binders from Summit Racing and it cost about $110.
Just FYI, the headers are a PITA to wrap b/c the piping curves so much and usually header pipes are very close to each other (not allowing you to run the wrap through the piping very easily). You will see, it is a PITA - or at least a GTSpecII header was. Last edited by SilverSurfer04STi; 01-21-2005 at 10:22 AM. |

i'd recommend getting it coated. it'll last longer and isn't too much more expensive. try finding somewhere within driving distance to cut-down on shipping costs. i found a place that would do a header, uppipe, downpipe, and turbo heatshield for their minimum service charge of $200. turn-around time was 7-10 days.

Kenny can you post the info about that place. I live in the OC also and may be interested when I get my exhaust in a few months.
PS - Were you the guy at Aerosim the night of the South Coast Subaru event, Blue STi? I came later. If so it was nice to meet you, your car gave me some ideas. |

If you wrap the pipes in the "collector" area individualy, it will take about 100ft. You can get away with 50ft if you just make sort of a blanket over th large sections. you will need wire to tie the individual wraps to the one next to it so that it doesn't fall apart.

Is it a must to wrap each pipe? Or can I just wrap the whole thing as one(blanket wrap). I do not see how this would hender performance. I like the blanket wrap idea.

I personally did both wrapping and coating. 50' of 2" wrap will do most of it, or 100' of 1". 1" is much easier to wrap, but takes longer.
Also keeping your undertray in helps shield the headers from cooling winds. |

Wrapping is such a waste. Should have gotten te QTP. It comes Jethot 2000 coated. Just put it on the car. Put if i was you i would send your header out to jet hot and get it coated in the 2000. So much better than wrapping it.

I'd get a butt load of 2" wide (100').. and wrap a foot or two of your DP. My GP Moto was a pain to get in (I didn't wrap it, I regret it).. you may end up damaging the wrap.. the header was that tight to get in. Try to avoid too much overlap, 'cause like I said, it was a pretty tight fit. It's also easier to remove the turbo when installing the header. Those studs are a real PITA to line up with the turbo. |

It did not take me that long to install. Only an hour. I have to remove it and then wrap it. The key to getting that header in is to turn 180* to where most of the header is sittng on the outside on the passenger side. Slide the uppipe up and rotate.

yesterday, i actually dropped off the same parts i listed in the post above. sermatech offers three different ceramic colors: black, grey, and polished silver. i, of course, opted for the polished silver. iirc, these are the steps in their process: acid dip, sand blast, ceramic coating, bake. i think they said it was a two process layer ceramic coat; i'll post pics of the components when i get them back. i drive a cgm wrx, actually: |

Does the plasctic undertray still fit with the GPMoto headers? It looks like it would be tight. That tray plays an aerodynamic role...I would hate to be forced to take it out.

No, the plastic undertray still fits underneath the headers, but there is not a whole lot of room b/w them.

The STi undertray usualy need a small section cut out where the one pipe makes the u-turn back to the merges. I cut mine by simply mounting it back up and letting it melt exactly where its a hair too close, then cleaning up the edge.
