Try not to get parts there, either.

Did the timing belt thing (water pump, hoses, idlers, etc) and Auburn Subaru in Washington state beat them by >40%. Tax free and delivered in 2 days to boot.

Researching the web will give you the list price, and Rancho Imports (Kearny Mesa Subaru) bumps the price even *higher* than list.

I drive to Bob Baker for parts I need now, and call Auburn for stuff I need later.

Me: "Yeah, I need an air filter for a 2002 WRX"

Rancho (now Kearny Mesa) Subaru Parts guy: "Is that the turbo WRX or the non turbo WRX?"

OMFG they actually SAID THAT? ok, that alone, is a big RED FLAG telling you NOT to go there. how the hell are they a service department for SUBARU if they don't even know their own cars? cripes.

Auburn subaru? I see your location is Vancouver BC to SD (well, west coast), AJ604.

I suggest just getting you parts from Jamie in Bellevue, WA. You'll be much happier.

Yes, they actually said that. Mind you Bob Baker El Cajon's parts dept. is not really any better:
They insist there are two different sizes of air filter for the '02 WRX (even though one is clearly for the RS).

check out the prices for both kearny mesa subaru AND bob baker and also get a list of the things that they do. if you can do it yourself, i say save yourself the money and do it. but if you're not as car savvy under the hood like me, i'd take it to the dealer.

coati...holy crap not comforting. lol.

liupj, thanks for the info. i'll look into that.

I test drove an 06 Impreza Outback Wagon at Kearny Mesa a few weeks ago (I did not end up buying it). The dealer guy was showing me what he knew about the car. He tapped on the headlights and said to me, "These are Xenon headlamps, they look real cool at night." I was like, "I think those are halogens." He said, "Oh, well, I was just talking out of my ass there."

wow, I got my car from Kearney Mesa Subaru and had no issues. I bought it from the salesman "Jordan". The finance guy was decent to me as well. I can't say much for the parts department though like many others. They give no discounts at all and don't seem to be nearly as into Subaru's as the Pacific Honda guys are into Honda's (owned by the same company). For the parts thing, well, I can see them asking you turbo or not becuase how many idiots will go in with a normal impreza and call it a WRX, then get the wrong filter. That is really just covering their own ass.

Sales = good
Parts = eh, they are down the street so its convenient. I buy online if I can.
Service = no clue, I do my own work and keep all reciepts and a milege log of all work done.

Thumbs up

In the interest of honesty and truth, I had a really good experience with their parts dept this week. The guy (Aurrie?) was very helpful and friendly.

A+ would deal with again.

Kudos.

I've had the El Cajon parts people routinely ask if i have the 2.5L or 2L engine when i tell them my car is a 2002 WRX. Didn't know i had that option back then.

I purchased from Kearny Mesa and will take them up on the free oil change. I was OTD for MSRP on an 09 sedan, which I thought was fair. Especially since TTL was ~2200. In general I try to avoid dealership service departments like the plague.

Default Don't go here; go to Irvine instead.

F this place; make the short drive north to Irvine. Got a much better deal and the people there were far cooler. I emailed Desi at Irvine Subaru and she gave me a quote that blew everybody else out of the water. KM said they'd match the deal but would never confirm the number, then the sales guy sent me a bitchy email after I emailed him (as a professional courtesy) to let him know I was out of the market. Irvine was 100% straightforward.

Had to take car to KM Subaru because it was the contracted dealer with the place I bought my car from.

1st time : Assured me that all my concerns would be addressed.
Picked up - 0 concerns corrected.

2nd time: Didn't listen to what I had to say. Told me everything was good and basically gave me the go away treatment.

3rd time: Brought back by dealer I bought from, sat in pile of cars for a week and they never even wrote a service ticket for it. Go for a drive with the tech. Tells me this is just out courtesy because none of the problems I'm having are part of the original ticket and there is no new ticket. Verifies problems. Says they are normal.

Frank in the service department is a rude idiot.
Rick the tech (with "supermastertech25yearsIwasonengineerteamwithsubar ublahblahblah) can barely hear, doesn't know half of what he is saying.

Told me I should apply to work there based off the conversation we had during the test drive. HAHAHAHAHAHAH.

Long story longer, LISTEN to the everyone else and DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICE DEPT. Their sales could be great. They appear to be a volume dealer, however I will also vouch for Desi and the team in Irvine. I bought my 04 WRX from them. Best experience. Just don't let them detail it.

Bringing the thread back from the dead but it's to keep the warning fresh of using Kearney Mesa Subaru. Try your luck at El Cajon, I can't vouch for them yet but you'd be better off trying them versus the tards at KM.

I bought my 2016 from El Cajon Subaru. Absolutely amazing service!
If you have to go to a dealer, I would go there.

If you are looking for a good shop and reasonable prices along with outstanding service, my really good friend owns a shop in Escondido.

Ask for Dave.

He has been my mechanic for years for all of my cars and my family.
Tell him I sent you and he will take good care of you.

Both dealers in San Diego are bad imo. Bob baker wouldn't stand behind there warranty on clutch recently.. sold for a BMW this weekend over the whole frustration. Sorry San Diego residents...

Definitely second this, terrible customer service at kearny mesa. They directed me to go to a repair shop down Convoy for a broken axle that was still under SOA warranty. -_-

Default Don't get your car washed at Bob Baker

I have had the worst experience at bob baker in Carlsbad, when I bought my last car there they ruined the paint and sold me a certified used vehicle that, after Simone rear ended me and totaled my car, had bindi along the rear fender, no wonder my car never aligned properly. Don't trust bob baker.

I bought my new crosstrek from John Hine subaru in Temecula. They gave me a very fair price and seemed honest.
