Question 1998 Impreza with rear end issues!?!?

Just got this 98 Subaru Impreza 2.2 auto awd

The rear end feels like its missing gears because when I turn left or right I can feel this lock up in the back while its making this awful sound that almost sounds like an extremely bad wheel bearing.

The Car howls but doesn't make any other sounds when driving in a straight line.

I put a fwd fuse in and now I only hear the howl, there is no rear end locking noise when turning left or right.

I'm sure my rear end is bad, but what I'm wondering is if I can rebuild it or if its easier just to replace it?

I also wanted to mention the car has 142k, and is in otherwise good condition.

Drove the car this morning to work with the FWD fuse in. Can still hear the howling of the rear end, but no issues with turning. Anyone?

I'm more or less just trying to figure out what year and models I can get another diff from?

The howling probably is a really bad wheel bearing. Use legacy bearings they are tapered roller instead of the ball bearing that the imps came with.

Drain and refill the trans 3 times with short test drives in between with the fwd fuse out. Takes like 4qts a change. just make sure to drain the right plug and fill the right dipstick. That will likely fix the awd torque bind that causes the thumping.

I have a 98 Impreza outback sport and can’t find the fwd fuse slot. Can’t find it anywhere online either.

Typically, open hood, look on firewall on passengers side, cover may have "FWD" on it.
Should also be in owners manual.
