That puzzles me why VW won't or taking so long to bring the port & direct injection engines here. It's one thing if they don't have it developed yet but we know that isn't true.

Pretty sure it's emissions based. The port injection threw off something with the US based emissions testing. Wish it had port injection, I'd love to not have to clean carbon out of the valvetrain.

I've read that using port fuel injection helps lower particulate matter emission levels from the direct injection combustion process.
Maybe, for the moment, EPA/CARB particulate matter emission limits for gasoline engines are still low enough and VW figured they would cut cost by not providing port fuel injection to USDM car.
Or maybe it's as you said; port fuel injection screws some other EPA/CARB emission level limits.

The particulate matter and cost cutting could be the case as well, and perhaps sounds more plausible. There were quite a few cost cutting measures taken on the US R that are a bit unfortunate, but looking at what europeans pay for the R, it's understandable.

It might be a VW specific issue. Ford is rolling out their Port and Direct turbo engines now.

While watching that review I was thinking, wow, this guy is rather boring - a perfect match for the boring look of the Golf R. Then he surprised me by saying it wasn't his favorite, The STI RA was.

He gives some of the best and most detailed car reviews out there. He's a true enthusiast that autocrosses and tracks his cars so he gives great perspective on handling. I like that they put the car on a lift so you can get a better view of how it's built

His style, the cool, calm, and collected approach, speaks to me. I can't stand the over animated reviews like the motortrend review comparing the R and RS. I still watch them and pull info out, but I prefer the more rational approach of Savage.

And his comment about the plastic lug nut caps... lol. I didn't know that was a thing until I got this car... Seems dumb.

An interesting thing that I've found in moving to the R, is that the demographic that owns these cars is much larger than just people wanting an R/RS/STI/CTR. There are a significant number of people buying the R instead of other higher end performance cars like BMW's, Audi's, etc. They end up at the R because it's a great bang-for-the-buck car that still gives an upscale feel. And a good number of people selling their older R's are moving up to products like an RS3, not moving to cars like an STI or RS. I'm sure it helps that the mechanics of the R are identical to the S3, making the move more linear. Most of the video reviews I've found don't really address that dynamic though.

I have been a big fan of Savage Geese when he owned the FR-S and I owned a BRZ and started following him on Youtube. He always told it like it was and really isn't a fanboy or biased to one brand or another etc.

I watched the Golf R review and found it to be spot on. I've owned an MK7R Golf R, currently own an RS, and have owned multiple WRX's. All of these cars have pros and cons it comes down to your personality and what is more important to you. No doubt the Golf R is the better hot hatch daily driver. Interior, road handling, AWD, spacious interior, good MPG, etc. The Focus RS is more of an enthusiast car. More firm, more precise, better AWD/handling, more of a motor sport feel. The STI is more like the RS, in that it is less refined and not as comfortable as a daily, but it just has a certain presence and personality that the Golf R doesn't have. The Type R is somewhere between the RS and Golf R. I think Honda just took the styling too far for my liking.

Good time to be into these types of cars.

Agree with your take. Agreed with him on the R too, especially the steering feel.

I didnít agree with some the things he said about the RS in his review, especially the drivetrain, as he just lumped it basically, but it certainly didnít offend me, and I watched well before purchase time. I think he wanted to be the one not praising it as many other people like him, whether you-boob people, or journalists, were. It was funny to watch his comments then he drives it and says ďincredibleĒ or something like that. He likes what he likes and also said heíd take the RA over any of them, even though itís slower.

I watched his recent AP2 review recently also, and I owned one, and didnít agree with him on it either. Thatís one car I have never missed once, since I sold it. I will tell you one thing, he is biased, but we all are, and he is at least consistent in his comments, and not afraid to piss people off or go against the grain.

Thumbs up for Savage Geese! His reviews helped a lot with choosing a new car last weekend. I bought a new car rather than ship mine across country. I find his reviews unbiased and it seems like he’s got much knowledge and driving skill.

Power To The People: VW Golf R With Performance Pack Nudges 170 Mph


Depending on how much youíre willing to spend on a Volkswagen Golf R, you can have it with a multitude of optional extras.

Among them is the Performance Pack, which brings upgraded brakes, a new tailgate-mounted spoiler and the ability to reach a 270 km/h (168 mph) top speed.

For the right sum, Volkswagen will throw in a titanium exhaust system, too, by the specialists at Akrapovic, which is said to create ďcompletely new acousticsĒ and also shaves a few kilograms from the carís total weight.

These complement an extensive list of features, from the infotainment system with optional gesture control, to the Active Info Display digital instrument cluster.

Regardless of the budget, all MK7 Golf Rs are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The four-pot was recently de-tuned by 10 PS (10 hp / 7 kW) in Europe, in order to meet the stringer WLTP requirements.

Thus, the hot hatchís mill now produces 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW). It rockets it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just a little over 5 seconds when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox, or under 5 seconds when fitted with the dual-clutch auto.

As for the model depicted on film below, itís the facelifted version from the pre-WLTP era. This means that its 2.0-liter TSI unit makes 310 PS (306 hp / 228 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Itís also been equipped with the Akrapovic exhaust and celebrates its greatness by going all the way to an indicated 269 km/h (167 mph).

And we can't get it here... It's really not much. They say upgraded brakes, but it's just rotors and pads iirc, and there are three piece setups out there for a lot cheaper. This setup still uses the factory sliding calipers.

Been enjoying my R a lot. Thrilled with the car really. Very few complaints. Recently threw on my winter setup.

I am excited for the performance version of the MK8 GTI. It will get the 268 hp engine from the Arteon.

I own a 17 Golf-R with MT. I have to say it is kind of a mundane car especially compared to my STI (or my WRX for that matter with minor mods), but if that's what people are looking for, its a great every day car. Also makes for a nice relaxing GT car for the weekends.

I installed a Borla catback and AP recently. Nice setup for the car, gives it a bit more excitement on the sound side and a lot more power vs stock. Still nowhere as fun to drive as my STI nor WRX. I do not foresee myself getting another Golf-R after this one. If DSG I'd go for the S3.
