New Clutch - Reman. 6MT - Hollow Resonance (and follow up from last post)
Hey all,
So first, follow up to my last post. I have a 2012 Legacy 2.5 6MT. I replaced the clutch/flywheel after having the tob and clutch fork fail at 138000km. Then 25 km after the new clutch, a bearing seized in the tranny and failed. Here's the pics! So, I sourced a remanufactured trans w/ 155000km on it and had installed. Car shifts rather smoothly, even so far as to downshift 2nd to 1st at around 5km with little resistance (which could be worrying in fact!) The issue I have now, is that I seem to pick up on a "hollow resonance" accompanying the sound of the transmission (only notice it in gear, usually lower gears while gaining RPM) coming from the general center console area (where flywheel and transmission are located roughly). Never having a significant issue with a Suub before, especially drivetrain, I figured it would be worth doing diff fluids to see if that would reduce/eliminate the resonance. I knew the central diff was in the transmission casing itself, but was surprised to find the front diff is using same fluid as well (correct me if I'm wrong here, pls!). Which kind of eliminates the diff's fluid being the sound source, as the only independant diff needing fluid would be the rear, and I do not believe that's where the sound is sourced from. Also noted, I've had the nostrils open for any scent of burn, and there hasn't been any. I did some looking around, thought about draining some trans. oil and replacing with Lucas Oil Stabilizer in an attempt to get rid of the noise, and quickly nixed that based on what I found (which basically laid out that it's not a good idea). So there goes the snakeoil fix. Anyways, one question would be...is there any yellow metal (brass) in a Subaru 6MT's synchros? Second, and guess as to the hollow resonance? The vehicle is not pulling at all (loose mount bolts), it shifts smoother than all my old Suubs ('00 WRX, '06 ISW) and even with the original tranny. Would the seized bearing in the tranny cause damage to the flywheel? Tob and snout were in mint condition after the bearing seized. Or...Am I just being waaay too sensitive to the sound?? Anyways, here's a picture of the flywheel, and the dear old girl in her winter boots. Any thoughts/comments are as always appreciated!

Also, would the new flywheel be lighter than the original for some reason? Could that be the cause?
