2.5RS Weight Reduction info and questions.
Ok so i wanna lighten the load in my 2.5rs i can buy the lightweight hood, trunk, bumper inserts, take out the weight in the glove box and get a lightened crank pulley and flywheel. Aside from lexan and A/C and CC removal what else can i get rid of. I didn't see too much soundproofing in the doors when i cracked them open. Any FAQ's, ideas, sites with more info. Thanks

You forgot the big dampener plate inside the front crossmember. That thing weighs a ton!

wow, im surprised nobody is interested in this, i would've thought more of you would be trying to make your cars lighter!?

I didnt know about the weight in the glovebox other than removing the paper in it. Also there is sound deadning under the carpet in the compartment and the trunk that can be removed. I dont know if the impreza has them but check for side impact beams in the doors (unsafe but your already loosing the bumper suports) Other than the obvious remove spare tire kinda stuff i cant think of any more. BTW i concider myself a race part, i only weigh 130lbs, hehe.

I would only do weight reduction if I were going to race the car professionally. You can strip about 200-400 pounds max without sacrificing too much. If you want to go that extra mile, you can take out the rear seats, panels, gut the trunk, and take out some of the useless items that are for street use. eg: washer tanks, carpet, door panels, and roof liner.

How much do the stock RS seat weight?? I know in my Golf the seats weighed quite a bit and it seemed that if you were able to find a set of seats that weigh 15lbs. That would save atleast 10lbs a seat. Maybe i'm just dreaming.
But seriously how much do the stock seats weigh??? |

Stock seats weigh 29 lbs apiece without rails.

The rear seats are really light though. So you won't lose much weight there.

As an N/A buff, I had to go searching for weight to lose. While upgrading my car this weekend, I found a few things. It's just stuff that you can take out with minimal impact. There was a heat shield under the center of the car that weighed about a pound. That got tossed. Rubber matting behind the rear seat got tossed, too.
The flyhweel and pulley shave about 20lbs off of the engine. 40lbs can be lost on the front and rear both using lightweight bumper re-enforcements. Losing the rear seats is pointless. The bench and backing only weigh about five pounds a piece. The front seats are heavier, so I'd just replace those, and keep room for four. Behind the back seat, there is a rubber mat that weighs about as much as the back seat assembly. It can be removed with no problems. Put the black honeycomb piece back in though. That will protect the cushioning from stuff in the trunk. The hood will save you around 10lbs. The trunk lid only saves 2lbs, so I didn't think it was worth it. JCS sells a lightweight front bumper, too. That's about another 10-20lbs. Lose the spoiler, also. There's also insulation under the bonnet that can save about 5lbs. Just in daily driver weight reduction, you can lose about 100-150lbs VERY easily. Spend some money, and you can drop around 300lbs total w/ reinforcements, bumper, seats, and hood. It will still be driveable and comfortable at that point, too. Ditch the floormats(20lbs), spare(10lbs), jack(10lbs), and trunk carpet(25lbs) for raceday. Running around without those things just to save weight on a daily driver, really doesn't do much for you. I'll post more as I find it. Gary |

Get rid of the sunroof. Thats good for atleast 10lbs. I mean replace it with a kit.

Removing small things may not make a big enough difference to even notice.
keep in mind 30 lbs is only about 1% of the totol weight of the car, you, and a little gas (3000 lb). And your power (95hp @ wheels) to weight will only increase to a mere 0.003 hp gain (if my rithmatic is correct) But doing wieght management for handling like... lightning the wieght in front of the front wheels, Moveing weight front to back, Moving weight to driver side to passanger side, Decreasing unsprung wieght, ...will prove to make big differences I read last months or so and article in SCC comparing about 200 lbs of extra wiegh and just decreasing the unsprung wieght the the wheels (decreasing a few lbs per wheel). They got better 1/4 mile times with lighter wheels (used 18,17, &16 in. wheels) compared to making a 200lbs wieght reduction & keeping the wheels the same. anyone remember that article? |

You mean our RS suffers from a 42% power loss between the flywheel and the tires? bummer.

Also send the battery to the trunk with a relocation kit. Beter weight distribution, and morefoom in the engine compartment.

Hmm. ditch the foglights. passenger's side windshield wiper. get rid of any skidplates (hey you want it off, take it off.) take out all of the little vent stuff, plastic ducting under the front end, map/dome lights. Get rid of the sunroof.
If you really want to strip it, there's lots that can go. Personally, I want a car, not a shell. EDIT: Oh yes. Ditch the airbags, computers, etc. and the ABS equipment. Parking brake. muffler, that carbon filter thingy for the gas tank evap system. Fuel door, antenna, stereo/speakers. take out the plastic screen covering the instrument cluster. Heck... take out all of the instrument cluster, then the dash padding, HVAC controls and equipment. Yep, I hear that getting a lighter battery and moving it to the trunk or under passenger seat makes a world of difference in handling.
See that your removing a ton of weight that is before front wheels line and just relocation of the battery alone will make a bigger difference than getting a lighter hood. post note: Anyone know were to get one of those supper small racing type batties that can fit under the passanger seat.
