Default Another full size spare question

I know a few of you have tried it already. Does that little bar at the end of the spare tire cable fit through the hole on a OEM steelie? It doesn't seem to fit on the alloy wheels.
Also, from what I read, the tread pattern needs to be the same and tread depth needs to be within 2/32" of the other tires.
When I get new tires, I'm going to go with the Goodyear Triple Treads. I can get a used one but looking at the tire, it has a directional tread so I'm not sure if it'll be good to use as a spare.
I'm thinking of keeping the best tire out of my RE92s. How far can you really go on a tire that is more than 2/32" of the rest without damaging the differential?
Of course I would only use it for a short amount of time until I can get the other tire repaired. Is it going to be a big deal for a short distance? I don't have an automatic so I can't disable the AWD.

I did the same actually for my Impreza and Forester. The full size is pretty close to the others but you do bring up a good point about distance. I don't think it would be a huge issue, but I can see a lot of highway driving causing a problem if the wheels are really far off in size. I've just never had faith in the donut tire.

I just tested out one of my snow tires in the stock size and a OEM steelie. The bar does fit through just fine. The tire does not fit under there at all. It looks like I'll have to remove that metal bracket thing underneath.
I'm guessing that someone else has done this. Will the tire rattle around under there without it or should I just bend the prong thingies?

How big is that snow tire, like I've said I got one of the OEM potenza's on a steel wheel hanging under there, all I had to do was push slightly on those metal bars to bend them outward JUST A HAIR. Yeah the tire fits snug, but it's no problem. I'd rather the tire be snug against those bars than be loose.

The snow tires are the stock 225/60-16. It'll fit if I bend the metal things underneath, I just haven't done that yet.
