Yes, the exhaust note did change for the better after about a week or two once the packing settled in. I find that it's fairly quiet when I want it to be, but then gives great tone and sound at certain rpms or when you get on the throttle.

I've been running my MadDad for almost 1 year now, and couldn't be happier.

Here's a few pics of the Thermal Solutions turbo blanket and modified stock heat shield:

Nice thread with a lot of great information. I'm also a 40 something dad with 2 really young kids. I've already got the SPT exhaust & STI SSK which came with the car. I've already upgraded the sway bars with Whiteline Sways and Kartboy endlinks. I usually do suspension mods and then practice driving the car at AutoXs before adding more power. Like most of you, I'll probably go straight to Stage 2 after installing the GTWorx Suspension.

How many miles did most of you put on the engine before adding your power mods? I'm currently at 1600 miles and will probably wait until I hit 10K to 15K before doing anything.

Cheers

Stage 2 @ 14K miles. I was mostly waiting for the warranty to get close to running out (3 yrs).

Added another pic to first post. I'm doing some small tmic updates to try and address a possible boost leak...

To hopefully avoid issues with the increase in boost, I made a few small and inexpensive mods.

- Swapped out the tmic to tb hose clamps with t-bolt style ($6)
- Added aluminum c-channel pieces to the crimped edges of the stock tmic (~$10)

I've read the stock tmic isn't a bad part when it comes to avoiding heat soak, but the plastic end caps can begin to separate with increased boost pressure. It didn't start happening on mine, but I decided to do a version of the "bulletproof" mod just in case. The aluminum pieces cost me $7 and a pack of 25 12" SS ties cost me $5 from my local Harbor Freight. I only used 6 of them.

After cleaning them up with a file, I notched the ends by swapping out the cut-off for a regular grinder wheel. The notches only need to be deep enough to hold the stainless steel ties in place. I used one 12" tie along the top edge for looks, then used two more to finish the wrap around. Then repeat the process for the other side. I tried to get the ties as snug as I could, but I don't think they have to be super tight. The channel needs to be gently knocked onto the crimped edges of the tmic using a rubber mallet... or at least that's how I did it, so they are on there pretty good already. Be careful not to touch and mess up the cooling fins in the core when doing all of this.

I think it came out nicely. It was cheap and relatively quick, and hopefully a little extra insurance. Good luck!

Stage 1 after about 250 miles (I had to get that POS stock tune off of there ASAP, wish I could have done it sooner but the UPS man was slow), stage 2 after about 5.5k.

Very clever. I may do the same. I've already bookmarked your thread as reference.

Which stage 1 tune did you go with?

Okay... I think I'm done.

Last upgrade was a Forge bpv to hopefully avoid boost leak issues that sometimes happen with the stock plastic unit. It's an easy swap, and not terribly expensive. I bought my from bostonmotorsports.com, which has the best price and free (fast to me) shipping.

I hope this thread helps a few others in the future. It was fun taking everyone's input and coming up with the right approach (for me at least). I've summarized my experience in the original post for posterity. Thanks again to everyone.

i noticed a bunch of you old men are running stock intakes..(im 38 btw ) my head is spinning about those intakes. they make power, they dont, they are loud, they are not. currently at stage 2, but i am adding FIC 1100 inj and pump in a few weeks, and plan on getting protuned on 93 and e85. i dont mind losing 10 or so HP without running a CAI. i cant stand the sound of the intake, i am probably going to yank off my nameless 4" mufflers as well, i liked how the car sounded with a catless DP and stock exhaust.. so what are your guys thoughts on the intakes, that manifesto needs to be updated, its so freaking old

edit, KMA2 nice choice on the BPV. i am running the yellow spring on mine. got it from BMS as well

Didn't read through the entire thread, so maybe OP addressed this. But, I Dynamated just my spare tire well and it made a big difference. The doors already had some, previous owner install for stereo that was in car.
I too am a little older than most on this forum, 44 yrs old. Sounds like it's out of your price range but I'm running a Cobb catted dp and AVO catback, has 2 resonators to quiet it down a bit. It's good and mean when opened up, but not bad at all on the freeway. The stiff suspension is more what friends ands ex-wife have/had a problem with.
I've never owned a vehicle I didn't lower and stiffen the suspension, so it's all I know.

Point of my post was to push for Dynamat to help with road noise. Your car has more sound deadening than mine to begin with anyways.

I was under the impression that a CAI didn't make a huge difference at stage 2. I'd be interested in learning more tho, so definitely respond back once you figure it all out.

Regarding the bpv mine came with a blue spring installed, and a yellow and red packaged separately. I heard everyone was using the yellow (and some talk about a green too), but I didn't know if I should stick with the one pre-installed or not. A quick and dirty "squeeze" test had the yellow and blue very close in tension. They are the same gauge, but the blue has another coil or two. Is there a manual anywhere you've found? Thanks!

I might check the spare tire well again and see how much deadening is there stock. If there isn't much, I might apply some dynamat and see how it goes. When I have the family in the car it gets noticeably louder inside. I'm guessing isn't due to the exhaust getting pushed a bit closer to the cabin and maybe something like this would help.

Thanks for the input.

I found this thread helpful in selecting the proper spring for my Forge BPV (currently using the yellow).

With my intake (AEM) it's easy to hear every little movement it makes. To be honest, I'm considering going back to stock intake, as the noise is beginning to get old. Additionally, if it isn't really serving any purpose, it doesn't need to be there.

At stage 2, an intake will make a small amount of power, but not too much, and they are VERY loud.

Thanks ctzn! I will give the yellow a try, do some logs and see how it goes.

Gonna go stage 2 OTS tomorrow. Invidia DP and Cobb SF intake with heat shield. Protune on Monday. Already have an Invidia Q300 catback, so I'll give my two cents on how everything sounds/feels after the protune.

Edit: Catted Invidia DP, FYI. Just to be thorough.

even with me adding bigger injectors, fuel pump, ebcs, and a pro tune on 93 and e85? as stated before, if i lose 10-15 hp i dont care, as you stated its LOUD and i dont want that

Injectors, pump, and ebcs won't make any difference on the amount of power the intake adds.

Power gain from E85 is mostly from optimized timing and fueling, not so much from increased air flow, which means the intake won't have a huge effect there either.

So while I haven't done or seen any before/after intake tests on a stage 2 + E85 setup, I imaging it won't be too dissimilar from a regular stage 2 gas setup, which generally has single or very low double digit gains from an intake..
