Default RS owners! How many mpg do you get?

My mother and father just told me they are leasing an Impreza RS auto for $0 and $199 a month to reduce the gas they are paying for commuting to work in seperate cars. They have a Dodge Ram which they use only to tow stuff and my mothers 05 Legacy Outback 3.0R for long trips. The Outback gets 26mpg and uses premium only. They only want to use the Outback for travelling comfortable on the weekends, like visiting the family, football games, etc. My father (53yr old) loves the STi, but it's not practical at all, so he is purchasing a 2005 leftover RS to carpool with my mother to work. (Lucky for them work is in the same area.) This car would be their "running around" car, while the Outback gets a break.

I assume the RS can use regular 87 octane? What type of highway mileage are you RS folks getting? Thank you in advance this will help them out alot!

TS, not RS:

04 TS 4EAT, got 28 mpg with roof-rack going 70+ avg on the interstate. Could have gotten past the 400 mi. mark on the tank but wussed out and gassed up. And yes, that's 87 octane

i get like 23 24 driving like a bitch and its mostly city on my 04 rs, when i do highway i do like 65 and i dunno how much that helps me cause it puts the rpms kinda high but if i do the actual speed limit on the highway i get better.

~20-25mpg... Usually closer to 20 if its commute. I'm looking into finding something else, or maybe a different transmission setup...

I have an '05 RS wagon, with manual transmission. I get about 27 mpg in mixed suburban/highway driving, flowing with traffic or slightly slower, and shifting at around 3K, except for highway mergers in congested areas.

I can get up to 29 MPG on the highway on long trips if I keep it below 65 MPH, and do some drafting behind trucks or big SUVs.

If they want better MPG they'd be better off in a Carolla or Civic/Accord.

I get 20-22 city/28-30 freeway. If they're looking for a commute car with great milage why not a Prius or Civic Hybrid?

they are spending 200 a month to get an extra 4 miles per gallon? not including plates and whatnot, look at it this way:

if they drove 2000 miles a month in the outback, that would be 77 gallons at 26 mpg times 3.20 = $232.00

if they drove 2000 miles a month in the RS, that would be 66.6 gallons at 30 mpg times 3.00 = 200.00

so you save 32.00 by spending 200.00

and thats if they drive 2000 miles a month, i dont even drive 1000 miles a month.

I've tracked every tank of gas to go into my 03 TS... Average MPG over the lifetime of the car is ~24.25 now.

The GC8 RSes used the 15.9 gallon tanks and 14.8 before that. I've had mine (manual tranny) go as low as 19 mpg. Up to around 27 mpg also.

The new 06 RS is supposed to get better mileage then the last the 02-05 RSs.

my rs runs like crap on regular, i have headers, cat back, short ram intake(cone on throttle), and i get about 400 per tank when i dont waste it in the hills. when i paly around, i get about 325 per tank. the best ive done sofar though was on my trip home from my grandmother's place in the mountains of southern va back to central md. i think i got like 400 in 3/4 tank. thats the best ive done since ive started paying attention in the last couple years of driving.

2004 2.5RS 5spd manual.

I get 30-32mpg during my morning commute. 70mph all highway, and about 25-26mpg with mixed driving.

I'm thinking about taking the crossbars off my OBS since I rarely if ever use them. Any ideas if that would reduce drag enough as to increase my MPG?

well i finally filled up, at 3.09 a gallon
Anyhow, the good news is that my MPG seems higher than it has been in the past. I've been driving it slightly easier (not downshifting quite as much, upshifting a little earlier) and I also found that my tires were pretty low compared to th reccomended PSI on the doorjam. I managed to go 292 miles on 12.29 gallons which is 23.75mpg. That's on mostly what would be considered city driving, with highway stretches for about 60% of my commute to and from work. Not too bad, definitely better than the 20-21 I was getting before. I just filled the tires up today so we'll see if that makes much of a difference on my MPG. I didn't bother removing the crossbars though. they're so streamlined I'm sure they just make a bit of noise and don't really alter the aerodynamics of the car much.

I'd be incredibly surprised if you can legitimately hit ~30 mpg. I've got the same engine and tranny and the best I can get is 27 mpg. The car is only rated at 29 mpg and usually those numbers are usually unattainable anyway.
