FAIRFIELD, Conn. A lawyer climbed through a neighbor's bedroom window and stabbed him to death after being told by a family member that the man had molested his 2-year-old daughter, authorities say.

Barry James, 58, was stabbed in the chest nearly a dozen times Monday. The lawyer, Jonathon Edington, 29, was charged with murder and burglary and was released on $1 million bail Wednesday.

Capt. Gary MacNamara said that police had not received a complaint about the child being assaulted before the killing, and "we have no indication it's true or not true."

More coverage available in FOXNews.com's Crime Center.

Edington's attorney, Michael Sherman, said the information came from Edington's wife. "The daughter gave the mother information which was alarming and disturbing. The mom relayed it to her husband. That was the spark," Sherman said.

James' 87-year-old mother discovered his body. When officers went to Edington's home, they found him standing by his kitchen sink with what appeared to be blood on him, and a large kitchen knife next to him on a counter, authorities said

"He's in shock," Edington's attorney said. "This is the most unexpected turn of events one can imagine with this young man's background."

(Story continues below)

Police had gone to the neighborhood before, when Edington called to complain that he could see James through a window, police said. "Either he was partly clothed or revealed parts of his anatomy that were inappropriate," MacNamara said.

Edington, a graduate of Syracuse University and Fordham University Law School, has been practicing patent law, Sherman said. Police said Edington has no criminal record.

Rita James declined to comment on her son's death.

James served two days behind bars in 2001 on a drunken driving charge, according to the state Correction Department.

"He had some bizarre behavior over the last month," said Darrell Maynard, a neighbor. "He drove his car through his garage, hit the other neighbor's building."

Another time a neighbor found James intoxicated on the street, Maynard said. James shouted obscenities at children, he said.

As for Edington, Maynard said: "Something had to happen that was terrible for this to have occurred." Edington "seemed like a computer geek or something. He was not anybody you would ever feel you were threatened by."

He did what so many fathers just say they would do.

I'm not going to make any real comment until we know for sure if the man had indeed molested his child. But, if it was true that he had molested his daughter, I see it as karma in action.

I don't care who the two year old is, info you get second hand from a two year old is not reason to climb into someone's window and stab them to death--leaving your wife and child without a father at home.

Stabbing a nieghbor without knowing if he really did molest the daughter is not a hero. Now if he had first hand knowledge that the guy did it (and by first hand knowledge I mean he saw him do it) then I would say he is justified.

Yep.

I'm generally not a supporter of vigillanteism, but you **** with a parents cubs and well yeah you gonna have to deal with Deebo.

Dude will get off with a temp. insanity plea, and be a hero in prison.
Myself I'd have just disappeared dude and nobody not even my wife would ever know what became of him.

On the other hand Asinine is 100% right.

guessing there may be a valid temporary insanity defense or at least jury nullification coming.

Karma?

The father was an idiot. Now his daughter is going to have to grow up while he spends years in prison for murder. Hard to believe he was thinking of her at all. Sounds more like a case of offended pride to me.

This was an act of selfishness on his part, pure and simple.

Yeah, I'm sure when the TWO YEAR OLD gave details of sexual abuse, she was just repeating something she read in a magazine. Think about it.

You need to think about the situation with a level head.

You can't say it's an act of selfishness. I'd say he acted irrationally in a fit of rage, but I won't say he acted selfishly.

It's hard to tell what you would do in his case. How would you react? If it were my daughter that was being molested, I'd at the VERY least beat the living **** out of him, then turn his ass in. I don't think it's possible to think with a clear mind after hearing news like that. Proven or not, you're going to be pissed off and depending on how you react to situations, you could very well end up doing something very stupid.

He did the wrong thing, no doubt about it. But it's hard to pass any kind of judgement without being in his shoes.

Edit, reading powns me. I don't know what I would do if someone told me my daughter (she's also 2) was being molested. I don't think I would have the balls to kill the guy though.

Option A) Kill the guy in his own house... wife/daughter lose father/breadwinner. Best case scenario: dad comes home after time in mental health facility.

Option B) Involve authorities, move for conviction, incarceration, and subsequent jailhouse beating/rape/death of child molestor.

Mmmmm, let's see here... I know you're all about the immediate old-west style of justice in these types of cases, imprezton, but you gotta think with your head sometimes.

Thats the easy part.
Living with the knowledge of as much and stowing it away, thats where many folks fail.
Next thing you know they're confiding in a friend, wife, or liquor bottle.

This discussion should have steered this way by now, so I'll give it a nudge:

How did a 2 year old get into this position outside parental oversight, anyway? Especially with a man on whom they've already called the police for indecent exposure?

According to the USPTO - he's technically not a "lawyer" but a patent agent.

I guess "lawyer" sounds scarier.

It's possible that (assuming it actually happened) the guy could have wandered over into the yard and done something without mom or dad noticing... but it's not likely if mom and dad were astute. Kinda makes you wonder if the lawyer dad didn't get bad info, huh?

It's not that I doubt the child, but still. Now that child and wife will be without a father/husband for the rest of their lives. Being an attorney, he should have known better. He should have contacted the authorties, defended his daughter in court, and put the guy away through the criminal justice system.
