If he could justify a 2.2 million impact on his livlihood, like losing a good job over this x years in lost earnings and pension, I would award him 2.2 million

If I call the cops and lie to have someone arrested, when it comes out in the open, the cops will arrest me.

So why has the guy at the dealership who called it in, not been arrested yet?

Its not about what he deserves. Its about setting an example for the future, so dealerships know they can't pull this sort of thing.

2.2mil is a punishment, a big hard lesson for the dealership.

Fine, dont give the guy one penny. But fine the dealership 2.2million.

Either way, that sales manager and likely any sales staff involved are likely unemployed right now

I don't see how dealerships can expect people to sign a new contract after they messed up the old contract.

If the situations were reversed does any dealer update the deal after the fact?

I can see it going pretty simply...

"Oh mr car dealer, I thought I was paying $15500 not $16000, I'd like to sign a new contract."

"Go **** yourself, we have it all in black and white!"

Salesman's name was Ron and I went from driving onto the lot with a 03 Pilot (transmission was shot....they missed that during trade-in) to driving off in a 11 Pilot in 2 hours. I don't **** around at dealerships. Oh, and EVERY new Honda on the lot had a $1000 to $3000 markup over sticker for "in demand fee" or some such BS.
I bet the new '13 Accords have a $10,000 markup then. I already saw one near DC trying to get $1k over MSRP

it really could. Nurses are always going to where there is more pay. Having an arrest record in the medical field is very damaging.

Ford came down hard on dealerships for gouging on the 2002 Thunderbirds. That gouging was at least partially responsible for the major backlash from the buying public. Well.. that and the fact the cars were grossly overpriced for what you got. After less than 68,000 total units and just 3.5 years of production, Ford pulled the plug. Mercy killing.

I'm all for this dealer being held liable, but don't minimize a case you know nothing about.

But here's why people really hate car dealers:

The average person buys a car only once every several years. Sure, there are exceptions, but for most people, buying a car is a big deal, 2nd only to buying a house. Or if they're renters, the most expensive thing they buy.

Doing business with grease-balls who may or may not have a high-school diploma, yet conduct car-selling transactions several times a month puts the buyer up against experts who take advantage of their familiarity with the process to get the highest possible commission for themselves. The commission incentive for car salesmen is the main reason people hate them so much. Most of the salesmen tend to adopt a condescending cynicism toward the customers, convincing themselves that the customer's unfamiliarity with the process is stupidity. You are not conducting business peer-to-peer; you are being taken advantage of by an idiot. I don't know anybody who feels comfortable in that position.

The salesmen can't understand why the customers obsess over the contract and read all the fine print; they sell cars all the time and they never read it. What's the big deal? The salesman just wants to blow through the process, gouge for as much money as possible, and move on to the next sucker.

The last 6 new cars I've purchased have all had a price pre-arranged before I ever got to the dealership. Before that, the last time I talked to an actual car salesman he started in on his lame attempts at Jedi Mind Tricks to the point where I just got up and walked out. As he followed me out, he was in damage-control mode: "What did I say? I'm sorry. Let's start over!"

I stopped, turned around, looked straight in his face and said in quiet, even tones, "You've blown the sale. I can't believe a single word you say." Then I left.
_________

When the Saturn brand of GM cars was introduced in 1990, as "A new kind of car company" their main marketing point was "no haggle" pricing. What this meant was
  1. You paid what the sticker on the window said.
  2. No greasy salesman would try to up-sell you.
Essentially the car was being marketed to pussies. There's no way to be polite about it. Spinster secretaries snapped them up like seagulls going after chum. To make matters worse, Saturn held owners' events which were like some sort of watered-down love-in where they all stood around singing Kumbaya and congratulating each other for purchasing a product. The first generation of Saturn buyers made Apple fanboiz look like haters.

I worked with a guy that bought one. He was sucked in by the whole "A new kind of car company" ploy. After a few months he realized he'd just purchased his grandfather's Buick Skylark.

Anyone who thinks this is worth $2.2M is apart of the problem.

Of. Awarding this is simply setting a standard for every ****tard out there with a phone book who can look up an attorney. Is it worth taking to court over some serious compensation, absolutely. Is it worth $2.2M, hell no. Wrongful death suits are only worth ~$10M.

$50k is too much. Give him the car for the price they agreed on and some compensation money and call it a day. The real punishment comes via instant social networking.

I'm guessing at $2.2M it gets thrown out of court. So $0 dollar bucks.

**** that. He's got a contract for the price they "officially" agreed on. He isn't responsible for their screw ups.

He bought the car in May.. it isn't like he just walked out of the dealership and drove off hours before they called the cops.

That's what I meant. The initial agreed price. The dealer made the mistake tough luck.

Having said that I would like to see him get the car for free and be done with all this. Millions is bull****.
