Default JDM STI V8 vs. USDM STI V8 tranny

I know the JDM version 8 is geared better but how much better? Will it bolt up to my usdm driveshaft or do you have to do a complete swap with diff and all? Are there any other differences between the two?

Also any thoughts on wear to get jdm version 8 tranny?

Thanks

IA performance sells them too. And WRXskeet is on the money with 5-6 being shorter.

The conversion sticky in the conversion forum has a listing of places that can get JDM engines. These places should be able to get the trannies as well.

The JDM trannies have steel shift forks, and the USDM ones have aluminum ones. Also, another thing to note is that all USDM six speeds have DCCD, whereas only certain JDM models have DCCD. Most JDM six speeds will have a 3.90 front and a 1:1 center, so you'll have to convert your rear to 3.90. You can use a auto WRX driveshaft or get yours shortened.

so if i get a non-dccd 6-speed w/complete rear end, then does that mean it is a jdm version? if so is the rear a 3.90?

Jdm trannys are made in dccd and non dccd models. If you get a whole STi rear end with the 6 speed make sure that the rear end is a 3.9. I currently have a jdm dccd 6 speed along with a us sti rear end installed on my car, no probs for the past 11k miles.

Can anyone tell me, from experience, the approximate cost for a complete drive line swap to a non-dccd STi 6 speed with the R180 and front brembos? I feel competent I could do the transmission and rear end swap on my own (well maybe with the help of a few burly Army buddies). With that being said, figure labor costs as the price of a 12 pack and a pizza

After reading ebeck's posts on his impressions of the JDM drive line I think it is one of the first things I am going to do.
