2013 Texas Legislative Session
I started one a couple years ago. Now, starting one for this year. HB 557 was filed on 1/16. It calls for a single license plate. Now, we'll wait for the letdown, as it doesn't advance into committee. I'm going to see if my representative (also a Republican) will sign on to this house bill.

So how do we show support for the license plate bill?

It will never pass. However...the changes to the bill most recently were worded incorrectly...and as such they can't even ticket you right now for not having a front license plate.

Both of these get placed on the floor every session and never move. Don't do searches cause you're a noon, do searches cause every year there's a thread.

There was a news story about it not too long ago...and I think I may have downloaded the statues specific to it. I have a plate on my car now in front bc the dealer had already drilled...but my wife never had had hers and gets no issues.

Contact your state representative and state senator.
Sadly, the other responses on here are correct. A bill is always filed, yet nothing happens. If there was a groundswell of support from all facets of car enthusiasts, car manufacturers, and other auto related groups, I bet something would happen. I know the only group against this bill is law enforcement. Their claim is that the front license plate helps in solving crimes. I call BS on that. They want the front plate in order to make it easier to use laser to tag you and ticket you for them to continue to raise revenue. Plus, it also gives them another reason (if you don't have a front plate) to pull you over and check to see if they can get anything else out of you - any outstanding warrants is one example. Either way, I have sent an e-mail to my state senator and state representative to let them know of my support for this bill. My state representative (through his election website) calls himself a "conservative Republican." In my e-mail I made sure to highlight two facets of conservatism to him. First, this bill should save drivers and the state money. How? Keeping current registration fees stable, and cutting manufacturing/supply costs should help the state raise even more $$. In turn, that $ could go into the roads/bridges/infrastructure (there's talk about raising the registration fee (read: tax) to $100/year ). Second, this shrinks government. Less laws = conservative government (at least that's what I have been lead to believe). |

I'm way for both bills. The blue laws are silly and the front plate is even sillier.

Heh. **** front plates. Not drilling holes in a bumper because the state thinks they need me to.
Besides, I like protecting my plate from the elements. And it likes to see the world from the front windshield. |

Someone once told me it is better to ask for forgivness than permission! |

I guess these legislators don't speak to each other. Another state rep. has filed HB 657 (yes, 657) with the exact same wording as HB 557 to make Texas a one plate state. And the legislator who filed HB 657, also filed a bill (HB 700) that would allow open carry (of firearms) in Texas.

Oh, by the way.. there are two bills: one in the senate, one in the house that will ban texting while driving. HB 63 and SB 28. I approve of those bills.

Here is an interesting bill that has been proposed. Do any of you have a license plate flipper? Something that controls how you display your plate (front or rear doesn't matter) would be illegal if this passes.

You do realize that these manufacturing/supply costs are our Correctional Facilities, correct?

So, where does the state procure the metal from? The state has to buy the metal from somewhere. I'm sure they buy it in bulk quantity. Ink needs to be bought for the machines. The machines and labor are the only constant. If we can halve the costs for the metal and ink, the state can save $$$.

Good news and bad news. The bad news: Tomorrow is the last day to file most bills, and there is no companion bill in the senate for HB657 (one plate requirement). The good news: HB657 made it to a committee hearing. It has been a long time since a one plate requirement went to a committee hearing. Anyone live in Austin (or can make it to Austin) that can go to the committee hearing on Tuesday, March 12 at 8am? I would love to go! But, I have a dentist's appointment in the afternoon. I probably wouldn't be able to make it back in time.

with all the money saving tactics going on in the states and federal governments, Id think this would be better than reducing peoples 40 hour week to 32 hours. Then again it makes sense so it probably wont pass.

The author of HB 657 is active on facebook and responded positively. I asked him about it, and this is what he stated, "I have been told that it won't pass, but I think it can. We will keep pushing it!"
He actually seems to engage his followers on FB, unlike my representative who only likes to post pictures and go to 2nd Amendment rallies. |
