Default Inside Sources Say Next Dodge Challenger SRT8 Coming in 2014 with Supercharged V8

Carscoop: http://www.carscoops.com/2013/05/ins...ext-dodge.html

Quote:
Adding to the many rumors about the replacement to the current Dodge Challenger that have been going around for the past year, is a report from Chrysler enthusiast site Allpar and Autonews, that the next SRT8 will come with a supercharged 6.4-liter HEMI V8 called the "Hellcat".
While a Chrysler spokesman declined to comment about the existence of the engine, company engineers reportedly confirmed the story to Allpar. The supercharger system is believed to help bring the V8's output closer to the 640hp of the Viper's V10, up from 470hp of the current Challenger SRT8.

This new engine, which will be paired to the Chrysler Group's 8-speed automatic transmission, will help the heavy Challenger better compete with the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

A Chrysler engineer told Autonews that the "Hellcat" would be something like a "lust hurrah" before tougher corporate average fuel economy standards kick in and begin to kill big-displacement engines and substantially lower output figures – or so the source claims, as we've heard that before (think 1973 oil crisis and to a lesser extent, the introduction of unleaded gasoline fuel and catalysts) only to see even higher-output engines today.

It's still going to weigh more than a neutron star and be the size of Minnesota. Pass.

I love the Challenger. Only muscle car I would own.

Muscle cars are suppose to be big and substantial. No Miata here.

It's Dodge. They'll still find a way to make it slow and boring.

Out of all the new muscle cars, the challenger wins hands down in looks. Probably the last one I'd buy though.

That might fly four decades ago or so, but it's 2013. A lot of definitions of certain classifications and descriptions of cars have changed.

I agree that it's not supposed to be a Miata, but it's just a massive car that carries a lot of weight. The cars it competes with get away with not being so damn large, so it's not a necessity.

The Challenger was always a larger vehicle. Out of all of them, the Challenge is probably the only one to follow the muscle car roots, not trying to be sports cars. That I think gives it the most charisma.

Definitely the best looking of the three, and sounding too. If it weighed similar to the Mustang, I'd be driving an R/T right now.

um... they're hoping that by pairing the new engine to an *automatic*, that it will better compete with the ZL1 and GT 500?!? ok dodge. maybe if you make it front wheel drive, it will compete with the Corvette ZR1!!

All of these cars should be 3/4 scale. I just don't understand how an enthusiast could find such a land barge appealing.

It's 4200 lbs. in SRT form, with an ungodly big body. 3/4 sounds about right to me.

Honestly, I just do not get the appeal of these cars to anyone but a retired guy used to driving the older American yachts of yore...

Isn't that the target market?

Its why my father has a challenger.

Of course. That's doesn't mean I have to like it.

IMHO, it's a big, useless car. Huge on the outside, not huge on the inside. Pretty fast, but nothing special, despite all the noise. Handles like ass, no matter how much tire they put on it. ****ty steering. Interior is junk.

470 HP, 13 second 1/4 mile. All that shout and noise, and you can't really significantly outrun your neighbor's 300 HP 335i?

IMHO, this kind of car represents everything wrong with the American auto industry.

The complete opposite of the cars they should be making. Give me a V8 RWD Fusion-like car instead of these huge ****boxes.

Not saying i want one either, but it appealed to him.

The baby boomer generation was pretty big, and a number of chryslers more successful (for a time) models have come from providing them with retro looking cars.

They want to sell you a dart, it was kinda sorta endorsed by but not really in fast and furious, and a rally car driver made it spin in the dirt, and a male model quarterback, and you can even have grandma chip in for your rimz on the internet.

The Challenger is actually pretty roomy on the inside, and the trunk is large. Still way too heavy though.

They need to chop 10% of the curb weight off the Mustang/Camaro/Challenger for the next generation. That would give us curb weights of about:

Mustang GT: 3,256
Camaro SS: 3,474
Challnger SRT8: 3,753

But that'll never happen so I'm wasting my breath. Maybe they can drop the curb weights by 5%?

Not in a manual, hell even the auto doesn't easily achieve that unless you have a tail wind and a unicorn as your passenger.
