Default Speed limiters required January 1 in Ontario and Quebec

Quote:
Toronto, Ontario - Beginning January 1, 2009, most large trucks in Ontario and Quebec will be required to use speed limiters, which will cap their speed at 105 km/h. The electronic devices will become mandatory in those provinces under new regulations.

A study by Transport Canada estimates that speed limiters will save the Ontario trucking industry about 100 million litres of diesel fuel each year, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 280,000 tonnes annually.

There will be a six-month educational awareness period to provide truck companies and drivers, including those from other Canadian provinces and territories, and the United States, an opportunity to comply with the new rules. The limiters will be mandatory for all trucks manufactured after 1995 with an electric engine, regardless of where they come from.

How long until we start seeing cars with limiters set at 80 mph?

thats really old news... my dad drives a semi. I don't know about what he drives right now, but the International he drove in the 90s had a speed limiter. Pretty much limited it to 110 which sucked on the 401 or when taking a run at a big hill.

hmmm ... yeah, most people do 120 (75 mph) on the 401. Slow trucks are actually a hazard.

probably not.

I don't know why they would limit the trucks to 105km. Come on guys. Anyone who lives in Ontario (I lived there for 27 years) knows that the 401/402 really should have the speed limit raised to 110km at least. Everyone travels at 120-130 average speed. I know I'd drive from Woodstock to Montreal and be there in 5 hours. 130-140 was my average speed. Cops don't even really look at you if your going 120 unless they are really bored.

I can barely get to 120 on the 401 because of traffic, but i know what you mean. It will be interesting to see how this works on other highways less congested.

I don't understand how they will limit speed on older trucks. My 1995 International 5 ton box truck at work will run without the keys in the ignition as you have to physically push a mechanical lever in to shut the engine off.

AFAIAC all trucks over say 10,000 lbs should be speed limited and be required to stay in the right lane...some of these MF's plow down the road at 80+ MPH with 80,000+ LBS, this is just ludicrous to me

Yes there are hills lol. I take it none of you have driven through northern ontario. Its pretty cool. narrow roads cut through the landscape resulting in cliffs on both sides.

State police will be forced to spend less time on the highways and will stick to local roads...

Should be interesting if it makes it here in my lifetime.

According to the OP, it's for trucks with electric engines, so that should be very few affected models.

Electric or Electronic engines? Generally the electronic engined trucks have much more power (because they are newer) so yeah. My old school International JUST hardly does 120km/h going down hill.

Every day that your government meets, a little bit of your freedom is stripped away, usually under the guise of good intent.

So long as an old mechanical-injection diesel has air and fuel, it'll keep running without any electricity whatsoever... That makes limiting them fairly easy: When the limit speed is exceeded, you divert fuel from the pump's output back to the tank instead of into the engine. Remember that you can't get "lean detonation" in a diesel. That's likely what your lever does (closes a fuel valve -- though it might also block the air intake).
