took out the go-kart today, in the trunk of the wagon. it fits easily.

i did a mile or so of 'recreational trail' that is for horses or snowmobiles. there was a ton of horse ****. the ScooterX 196CC offroad gokart did O.K. and did not get stuck. it has a crappy cvt so winds off alot of power before actually moving the kart. once it gets going tho - speed is the least of your problems. it follows ruts and is pretty scary to ride over big jolts due to lack of front suspension of any kind.

Went to a pick and pull and found a 99 Outback with JDM projector headlights. The left one was smashed but I grabbed the right one as a spare. And it was a deal and half! Also started on a custom grill.

Has anyone used an OBD2 to USB cable (like this). I want to get one to use with my two Subarus (95 Legacy, 09 Impreza) but nervous because I can't find any decent looking freeware. I was thinking initially to get just a regular OBD2 scanner (like this) but I feel like with a USB cable I will receive more information. If anyone has any advice that would be great.

Grabbed some LL Bean wheels for winter duty. They need to be refinished, leaning toward painting them a color close to BBS gold.

Spent a couple days at VIR running with the Audi Owners Club, then with Trackdaze.com. Had some dry sessions and some wet sessions. I run in the advanced group, so there are some damn fast cars, but the wet track more than leveled the playing field.

The fact that the Subaru was at the track was a bit of a surprise; I started the Audi event on Saturday with my CTS-V, but had alternator issues so I had to rent a UHaul and tow it home Saturday night. Got home about 11:30pm Saturday, unloaded the Caddy, put the Subaru on the trailer and drove to the UHaul facility to drop off the truck and trailer, then went to the 24hr Walmart to buy oil for an oil change. Changed the oil, removed the rear seat, pulled the front track pads off the shelf, and staged the track/auto-x wheels and tires to load in the morning. Went to bed about 3am, got up at 8am, loaded the wheels and tires in the car and hit the road. Got back to VIR about 1pm, with the next session for my group at 2:05. Went to swap on the track brake pads and wheels/tires and when I pulled off the passenger side rear wheel I found this:

That endlink was just dangling from the sway bar. Doh! OK, well, I guess I'll be running without the rear sway bar attached. I also noticed that my rear pads were looking pretty slim. I knew Ken from KNS Brakes was going to be at the Trackdaze event on Mon/Tues, but he had already hit the road from his place, so I wasn't able to have him bring me some H6 rear pads. Bummer.

Got around to the driver side front and found this:

I don't know how long it's been like that, or how that pin hadn't managed to get sheared off by the spokes of the wheel. Obviously, the last time I swapped the pads I missed getting the little wire clip thing on the back of the caliper through the hole in the pin. I was worried that when I got the wheel off I would find that the wire clip was gone, but in fact it was still there. Phew!

Finished installing the track wheels and track pads and managed to make it out in that 2:05 session just a few minutes late. Got in one more session on Sunday as the sun was setting. Here's how she looked before that final session (you can see how low the sun is already):

Monday rolled around and since Ken from KNS hadn't brought any product to sell I was on my own. I had to cut my 2nd session short, as the rear pads were dee you in DUN!

Drove out to Advance Auto and picked up some Wearever Gold pads, then returned to the track and threw those babies on the car. At this point it was starting to drizzle, so my remaining two sessions of the day (and the first session on Tuesday) were wet. I went from being one of the slower cars in the group to being one of the fastest. Needless to say, it was a blast!

Sounds interesting, but also sounds like you had a blast Pat Glad to see youre still tracking the subaru... even if it wasn't planned. How did driving the car at the limit without a swaybar feel?

The car actually wasn't bad without the sway bar. In the wet, it was probably an advantage to keep the car more stable. In the dry I imagine it would have been better to have the rear sway bar to get the car to rotate a bit more, but it didn't feel like it was plowing in the corners like a JD tractor.

managed to get the 9-2x wheels (the fancy 10 spoke ones) and new falken tires installed on the car. IT looks awesome but i noticed something when i started heading into corners that im used to. lack of steering feel. I did not think going from a 185 to a 205 would cause me to loose too much feel. Its little annoying but i think the tires are showing me how worn down the shocks and bushings really are. im going to plan to install some steering rack bushings one day and get a proper alignment.

BTW awesome Job Pat!

i'm working on
- a trunk latch that wont unlock

Mechanic is wrong, unless he means that something is bent/broken to the point that the camber can't be fixed.

Swapped the driver and passenger Recaro SEs, which have been in the car since late 2005. Driver seat has seen lots of ass time, passenger seat almost none, and the driver side was clearly showing the use. I might have to see about getting them both refurbished at some point. No tears in the fabric, but the well-used seat has a spot on the left side bolster where I would rub getting in an out of the car, the seat cushion fabric is stretched a bit, etc.

That excessive camber & wobbly wheel is probably a bad wheel bearing...

Replaced the fuel filter, which involved fighting with hoses that absolutely did not want to come off and of course plenty of gas spilling (despite depressurizing the fuel system first).

Replaced the PCV valve, which was comparatively painless. Old one seemed fine, but it had been 60k miles so I figured it was due.

I used to see sets on Ebay pretty frequently. I haven't looked in a while, but they shouldn't be that hard to turn up.

Are you thinking that changing the oil will give you more power? Are you running sludge in the engine now or molasses or something like that? If your oil is in such bad shape that it's causing a loss of power then I would suggest you get the oil changed more frequently.

Oh while I was gettin my oil changed sat down with one of the guys at outback and got a pretty good idea of what mod path I'm gonna follow... Looks like I'm saving for a DP, boost controller, and tune. He said after that with my v52 I could b sitting around 300+hp, I was like a kid in a candy shop!

Drove my Spec B like it was a blur this early dark morning. I mean seriously, if a car is trying to break the sound barrier in the left lane you would think people would move out of the way. Still doing detail research on what things I should get/do for my new Spec B.
