Default M2 vs TurboXS vs APS . . . What's the best cheap way to quiet and clean my exhaust?

I currently have a tuned WRX [email protected] and [email protected] running a Helix DP and Borla XR-1 . . . no cats/no resonator. What's the cheapest method of "quieting" my setup? Borla doesn't make a silencer.

I was thinking of replacing the Helix with a catted unit. How much hp should I expect to lose with the typical aftermarket DP? Does anybody make 3" DPs with two cats (including the midpipe)? I'm trying to improve my emissions . . . and reduce the "truckish" sound emanating from my car.

if you put a sti can on your exhaust you should quiet it up some and still have a good looking exhaust.

I have a sti catback on my car just because i wanted something that looked a little different, rest of my exhaust is SS headers, catless up pipe, and HKS down pipe. i currently have 279hp at 1.15bar and somewhere around 263tq. So its not like its going to choke out your system.

Maybe the Sti can does not flow the BEST out of all the exhausts out there, but if you want somethign a little more quiet, it is a option, and a cheap one at that.

The Borla XR-1 is a large bore straight through racing muffler, it is NOT quiet. The cheapest thing you can do is cut that sucker off and replace it with a street type muffler.

I would also have to go with you getting a different muffler set-up ... That would likely be the best way to quiet down your ride ... As a side note, I've also heard alot about the "Spiral Auger Style Muffler" ... You can go to this site here ... http://www.speedwaymotors.com/default.asp ... Search for part number 91013984 ... (I'd give the direct link but it's too damn long, sorry) I've never used one myself, but I have met a couple guys at local meets that have them, and swear by them ... Hope it helps ... Oh yeah, they are not supposed to rob HP, they quiet you down, and they're cheap too ...

Try welding in a round body muffler, like the Magnaflow Magnapacks or the Dynamax race muffler. They are straight through and should not reduce flow at all. They just drop the pressure of the gasses. Put this before your muffler somewhere should help.

Another vote for ditching the XR1 muffler. I had one before on my Neon race car, and they're insanely loud. You might as well just be running a straight pipe.

i used a dynomax super turbo muffler that was designed for modified RV motors. it 3 inch in and out and recirculates the exhaust through it 3 times and has the airflow charateristics of a strait pipe. i didnt notice any power loss and my car sounds stock again. the only bad thing is that its huge and was hard to fit under there. but was well worth it inth end. i also have a 290whp setup and didnt want to loose any power, just the anoying sound.

Yep, I would tend to agree. Weld in the longest Magnapack that you can fit in there. They're perforated core so it shouldn't decrease flow, but should quieten it up.

Buy a dynomax bullet race muffler and have it welded in your midpipe (would effectively be a resonator).

A local did this and it really helped quiet it down and take the edge off.

Are the bullet racing mufflers stainless steel or aluminum like their welded series mufflers?

http://www.kteller.com/store/product...roducts_id/224 I just had one of these welded into my perrin catback it was way to loud with the helix catless dp. It quited it down some but mainly it made it a much mellower not so obnoxious tone.

You could consider adding a high flow cat to your downpipe. I have the catless Invidia downpipe and my local tuning shop is going to add a metal dynamics high flow cat to it (the same high flow cat that Cobb uses in their street downpipe and claim it does not affect performance), mostly because I also want to quiet down the car a bit and be environmental as well. It's on order and will probably take a few weeks to install, but I could pm you the results.

throw an insulated muffler tip on the end of the Borla. i was running the same can and it was freakin loud!!! put a 3" free flowing cat from flowmaster in line and all it did was smooth out the cylinder impulses while on the highway.

finally i got a 3" input to 4" output insulated exhaust tip...and just like that....it was quiet. when you would really get on it though it got loud again. so it was only bad when you wanted it to be loud!!!!

you'll prob have to shorten up the exhaust otherwise the tip may stick out too far....but without seeing your setup i can't say.

later, riggs

Ditch the setup you have. Why don't you run the Borla hush CB? You could also go Greddy since they use a resonator to quiet things up. Anything that has a resonator or a non-canister muffler will be quieter then your setup.

Wow! A lot of good . . . albeit disparate advice. I'm toying with the idea of selling this car but I wanted to make it "legal" and "less loud". I will probably go with a catted DP +/- the Auger Muffler.

im surprised the dynomax would quiet it down that much. i ran JUST the dynomax bullet (12.5" long body) for a little while and it was like running an open downpipe. its good to know that it is effective when used as a resonator though.

wickedscorpion- the bullet is made from aluminized steel.

You can get the Helix catted DP (now that they're not on national backorder anymore), or if you wanna go with two cats, Random Technology has a 3" bellmouth DP and 3" midpipe, both with high-flow cats. Very minimal restriction from what I hear.

Aluminized steel, huh? I'll have to bear that in mind...

What about these pipes from xcceleration?
http://www.xcceleration.com/itemdetails.cfm83.htm

Does it make sense to replace the Helix with two catted pipes for $670 and just keep the Borla axelback? Seems like that would clean up my emissions while being much quieter.

It's a shame it costs more money to run a clean setup (2 cats = $670) than a dirty one (no cats = $470).

if I had the money, I'd sell my TBE set up and get the TXS stealthback and add a stock STI axelback

my APEXi GT is considered loud around here.... and I usually travel at mid night.... so there's a few routes and streets that I'm not suppose to take after midnight... or else cops!

You can get them in aluminized steel or stainless. It's your pick.

2.5" or 3" as well as other diameters...

The longer the more sound it will consume I.E. the quieter it will make things.

Make sure you've got room for the size you choose however.

Those are the Random Technology pieces. Xcceleration sells them, as do Airborne Motorsports and SoG, IIRC.
