First off, thanks for the amazing thread. There is a wealth of info here. I've read the entire thread and have found some hints at what I'm looking for so I figure I'll throw my questions in the hopes that the answers will help everyone.
I'm looking for primer, paint, and clearcoat. You've given recommendations on the type of clear and primer to use, but I'd like to know if you could maybe add some more info to your first post to list some links to where this kind of stuff can be purchased? I don't have any pics handy, but I'm looking to do some extremely small scale rust repair on my car (think 1" by 1/16" area, essentially a deep scratch that hasn't deformed the sheet metal). I'll try and post up some pics when I get home but the rest of my questions are as follows: 1. Can you buy this stuff in small enough quantities or should I bite the bullet and buy (way) more than I need? 2. Can I do the primer, paint, and clear application without the use of a sprayer? I've found some paint sprayers that will work with my air compressor in the extremely cheap price range, but you've mentioned above that you may or may not recommend it depending on the brand. I don't want to buy any junk that just won't work well. If you don't recommend doing it by hand then maybe I'll search out a place to rent the equipment from. 3. Given the extremely small area I'll be working with can I get away with using a bottle of the OE touchup paint for my car or is it not designed to be applied that way? Thanks again for the help. This thread rocks.

Dear MattTHEpainter,
I'm looking to prep my entire 1987 BMW for a paint job to help reduce costs. What procedures / products would you use. With love, Tanktheory. PS. Sit on my face |

I have a limited Sti spoiler that I want to spray paint. The material is plastic (I think not sure) and it's been painted before and I want to color match it to java black pearl. What procedure should I take to prep it correctly?

What should I do to fix chipped fenders? They are chipped on the inside and I want to fix them and prevent further chipping. Should I just use touch up paint?

I have always recommended going to your local auto body supply store to purchase refinishing materials. I recommend this to beginners because it gives you the opportunity to get professional knowledge about the product you are buying. You will receive tips and tricks for application, and they will be able to help you get the right product for your project. I have never really purchased refinishing products online so I couldn't give a solid recommendation. 1. You can buy base coat in any quantity you like, from a 1/2 pint to gallons. I believe the lowest quantity for a clearcoat setup (clear, reducer, harder) is a quart. Primer usually comes in quarts to gallons too. 2. You could use spray cans, but I do not suggest it. A paint gun is like any other tool, usually price dictates quality. But, I have sprayed with cheap guns and gotten good results. 3. For such a small scratch I think getting a touchup brush from your local dealer or supply store is your best bet. Repainting an entire panel for such a small scratch doesn't seem very logical. Let me know if this helps. Last edited by MattTHEpainter; 05-22-2012 at 09:04 PM. |

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3...glTXX4WRPPK6bl And some "scuff stuff". http://www.prestaproducts.com/Scuff_...p-details.aspx Then use both products to sand the spoiler and remove any "shine", so the finish is dull. This allows the new paint to "bite" and have a solid foundation. If there is any imperfections use 400 grit wet sandpaper to feather out the damage. Then refinish. |

How bad are they chipped? I have never used Dr. Color Chip, but have only heard good reviews about the product. You should check that out.

hello,
I have an 05 jbp sti. when i bought it there was a large paint chip in the drivers door. It is chipped down to the bare metal and maybe a bit bigger then a quarter. I have just been keeping it rust free but would like to know what i need and the process to fix this chip. This is a tiny dent but mostly just worried about the paint chip. Thanks, Goeddel |

matt the painter: couple of questions.
1. how much paint and clear is typically required to respray a wrx/sti size car (im keeping the color pretty close to the current color). 2. this one really goes along with the first question but what all would one need to buy for a respray, including material to fill small scratches/chips. just the "chemicals". 3. i plan on keeping the color very close to the current color UGM but i intend on doing a matte/satin finish. is there a particular brand that you recommend for the paint and matte clear? 4. i have been talking to two different painters one is charging about $3200 for a respray with minimal body work (just some filling here and there of chips). the other is charging $1500 as a "side" job and i provide the "chemicals". they both have been doing this type of work for some time now but the cheaper one has never done a matte finish before. i assume that the application of the two are identical except the matte doesnt require any type of buffing, is this correct? also do those two prices sound ok considering one is done through a company with a warranty ($3200) and the other is done on his free time at his home shop ($1500)? thanks, shaun h |
