Porsche Cayman GT4 RS on the cards

Porsche’s onslaught of models will continue rapidly over the next twelve months as insiders have confirmed talk of a possible Cayman GT4 RS.

Porsche’s staff readily admit they’ve been surprised by the huge demand for the Cayman GT4, with talk among customers suggesting dealers have quietly been talking about the possibility of a GT4 R. However, our sources are saying that the GT4 might instead gain the RS badge, as well as a 4.0-litre engine.

Two other GT models will beat it into showrooms, though. Porsche’s development driver and brand ambassador Walter Rohrl confirmed to Auto Express that the facelifted 911 GT3 will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox, and is expected to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show this March.

The engine capacity will also rise to 4.0 litres and its power output is said to be greater than the 911 R - that means in excess of 500bhp. Improvements in low end torque delivery are also promised thanks to internal revisions within the flat-six engine - Porsche’s development testing will be exhaustive so as not to repeat the problematic introduction of the previous GT3, which was plagued with engine problems.

Porsche will also offer its most demanding customers an even more exciting model above the GT3 when it reveals its first 991-based GT2. The long-rumoured, iconic flagship will retain the rear-wheel drive of its predecessors, but a development of the current Turbo S’s engine in the GT2 will see its output increased from 580bhp and 750Nm of torque to a figure around 650bhp.

Porsche has tested up to 700hp from the engine, but it’s picked 650hp for reliability. Torque output is likely to remain around that of the Turbo S given the GT2’s lack of all-wheel drive, while also ensuring the longevity of the transmission, which unlike the GT3, will switch from manual to seven-speed PDK automatic.

Already undergoing testing around the Nurburgring, the onset of winter has precluded Porsche’s development drivers setting a lap time around the benchmark circuit. However, Porsche’s internal calculations predict a 7 minute 5 second time. Given Porsche’s official figures always quote an achievable, real-world number it’s not unreasonable to expect in the right hands it could well be faster still.

The previous GT2 RS, based on the 997 series, six-speed manual model, had an official laptime of 7 minutes 18 seconds. The fact a Porsche engineer told us that the new 911 GTS, in its most extreme specification with ultra high performance, road legal Pirelli PZero Corsa tyres, could achieve a laptime of 7 minutes 22 seconds demonstrates how quickly the Carrera range has caught up with Porsche’s most extreme performance versions, and the need for its most extreme models to widen the gap.


Huge customer demand has forced Porsche to bring forward plans to produce an RS-version of the Cayman GT4.

Instead of the current GT4’s 283kW/420Nm 3.8-litre flat-six cylinder, the RS, will come powered by an all-new, detuned 4.0-litre flat-six that will be shared with the soon-to-be-launched facelifted version of the 911 GT3.

According to an insider, the more powerful 4.0-litre that’s expected to produce around 320kW/500Nm was needed after the German car maker found its recently launched four-cylinder turbo-powered 718 Cayman S could lap the Nurburgring as quick as the old GT4.

Bridging the performance gap even further, the GT4 RS is expected to weigh in at least 60kg lighter than the current car.

Tailored for track use the RS will also come with a stripped-out interior and race car options like a half roll-cage and fire extinguisher.

It’s not known whether the Cayman GT4 RS will be offered with a manual gearbox, or the firm’s PDK dual-clutch auto. Or both.

If you want to get hold of one you will need to have some Porsche buying history to get an allocation - the sooner you get a deposit down the greater chance you will get an allocation.

If you go in before a model is announced, you can drop a much smaller deposit and be specific.

For example I put down a few k to get on the list for a 991.2 GT3RS with PDK in birch green (even though its not released yet).

A friend of mine put down 3K to get a GT4RS with PDK 14 months ago. Needless to say he's stoked.

If you do this, the deal is they will call you when the car is released and offer you an allocation - its at this point you either decline (and the small deposit is returned) or you go ahead and lock it in with a full deposit.

Basically its a good way for Porsche to do market research, assess demand and to ensure enthusiasts get first dibs A rare all round win.

Wild Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS emerges

Fastest Porsche Cayman ever makes its debut as part of final testing at the Nurburgring

Fresh footage and pictures of the hard-core 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS have been officially released ahead of its unveiling next month.

Shown as a prototype undergoing final evaluation at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, the German sports car-maker used its development driver Jörg Bergmeister to set a 7:04.511 lap, making the lightly disguised baby RS an incredible 23.6 seconds faster than a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4.

For the fast lap, Bergmeister drove a car fitted with a full race seat on the optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres.

No technical details have been released, but the Naca bonnet vents, rear windows delete, introduction of slatted cooling vents and larger rear wing suggest huge amounts of engineering work has gone into making the GT4 RS perfectly at home.

Look closely, and there's even 911 GT3-style centre-lock wheels.
Under the rear boot lid, expect to find an upgraded version of the 309kW/420Nm 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six engine that should produce fractionally more power and rev harder than the GT4's 7800rpm cut-out.

Channelling all its might to its rear wheels is a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission.

There's no word on how much quicker the GT4 RS will be compared to the 3.9 seconds it takes for the current PDK-equipped GT4 to reach 100km/h from standstill.

Factor in some weight-saving measures and an adjustable track-focused chassis and it's thought the Cayman GT4 RS will touch down in Australia with a potential price tag close to $300,000 – just $70,000 shy of what Porsche charges for the 911 GT3.

Bergmeister, who has spent more than 500 hours behind the wheel honing its handling, said: “The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is an uncompromising driving machine. It feels as nimble as a go-kart on mountain roads, yet is impressively stable and well-balanced on the racetrack.

"It is one of the sharpest cars Porsche has ever developed.”

3,227 lbs. The "Weissach Package" should shave off another ~40 lbs putting it around ~3,180-3,190 lbs.

Andreas Preuninger also goes on to say "this 500 HP [rating] is very conservative"..

Hmm GT3 pricing is not that far off when I built it on the Porsche configurator. I do like the smaller packaging of this though. It's gonna, and is I suppose, be one heck of a machine though.
