Raw Fuel Smell/Leaking Fuel Line on WRX

Went to warm up the car leaving work this morning the cabin smelt fine and when i was pulling down my street and parked in my driveway i smelt fuel, but didnt think anything of it since my dad was warming up his car and could be exhaust fumes. Then smelt it again while the car was idling going thru the McDs drive thru. Went away after driving. Then tonight heading to work I smelt this again and goes away when driving but when idling still at one spot for a bit the smell comes back.

Just got this problem this morning and now researching it through this thread http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131755 .

Have any of you had this problem and have you had it taken care of? if so who did it and were you able to get this covered?

i kinda searched on this awhile back i found something about there not being enough back pressure in the exhaust can cause it ill try to find the thread again

i know about the downpipe thing, i just got back from lunch and it smells like fuel even after having the car fully warmed up. I got back here to work and popped the hood and smelt a fuel odor by the passenger side.

Does the 04' WRX stillhave the fuel filter in the engine bay? I think that in 05+ they put the fuel filter in the tank, not too sure. If so change that out as well as check your hose lines. As the temp. gets colder the hoses harden, as you drive the car the lines get hot then cold then hot then cold, this flux in temperature can crack hoses and you might find some lines need to be replaced. I have seen a couple of the 02-03 wrx's needing hoses replaced because of this.

I've had to replace hoses twice in my engine bay. But it's like a buck for a fuel hose.

I just had this same issue on my 06. It turns out that it was the roll over valves (2 each on top of the gas tank) that was the porblem. I did have a cel. After the mechanic dropped my gas tank he found that both roll over valves had the stems broken/cracked and was seeping out gas fumes. evidently subaru has had a rash of these and parts are on backorder. I was lucky and mine only took about 2 weeks to come in and about 4 hrs of labor to fix.-john

it does have the filter in the engine bay but i checked all the lines and they are tight and show no signs of cracks or leaks. but there are quite a few fuel lines in the engine bay

There is a fuel line that leaks on the passenger side. its the fuel line that is under the turbo coolant resivour between the 2 intake manifold runners and back a little bit, i just had to fix it on my friends 02 wrx. I had to pull the manifold off and ended up finding a cracked hose on one and also a loose clamp. so i replaced the hose and all the clamps on the fuel rails. took me aboue 1.5-2 hrs.

Im assuming this is the same problem as yours because its a common problem. There is a thread somewhere called "Raw fuel smell log" most everybody has the same problem. But i see you have already found it.

Wow BHH you can pull a intake manifold off and put it back on in an hour and a half? Why hasn't Solid hired you?

The 2.0L intake manifolds are allot easier than the 2.5L

The fuel filter ones. Both sides cracked, but the front one wore more because the FMIC pipe sorta smashes it.

hmmm brodizzle I may have to hire you to do that. I called nate wade and they require a diagnostic of 45 and if that is the problem they say SOA should have no problem covering it.

nut I see one clamp I can tighten myself without taking it off but most say the loose clamp is the one that's hidden and faced the wrong way.

I had this problem with my '02 WRX. It was the fuel rails that needed to be replaced. After that it never happened again... at least while I owned the car. SOA covered it, but I was still under warranty.

This is a known issue, SOA should cover it.

they won't cover it, i asked, but i have done it on ours since i was removing the tgv's anyhow. I can take off and put the manifold back on in about the same time as brody, i also leave off those damn useless brackets too.
