Default Baron's '05 STi journal - forged internals and closed-deck madness!

Hello NASIOCers, long time coming...but I am finally making my journal here.

I've been obsessed with cars as far back as I can remember, so I can't really get enough of 'em actually. I've also been a longtime enthusiast of motorsports, including WRC, which is where the love for Subaru began. Watching the GCs dominate in the late 90's and GCs/GDs in the early 00's was so memorable. Then when I saw that the STi was coming to U.S. shores for the '04 model year, it was desire right there. Maybe that's why I'm so fond of the GDB chassis. I just knew I had to have one some day. I never gave up that dream and finally, in May of 2012, I was able to get one after an extensive search. I knew what I wanted, so I was on a two year hunt for an untouched, low mileage, one owner car with a clear history/title, and it had to be a fair price to boot!

I found the car the same day that Subaru of Gainesville had listed it on the internet and somehow, I was the first one to call about it. It had just over 28k on the odo, one owner, and was bone-stock. It wasn't listed more than 24hrs and after talking it over with the salesman, my mind was made up: I had to jump on this one because the price was remarkably fair compared to what the rest of the market was doing at the time. After working out a fair deal, it was shipped to me up in Nebraska, and it's been a joy to own ever since.....

Only problems were one wheel had some minor curbage and there were many bug marks permanently in the paint all over the front clip, because the owner did not like to clean I guess. After the flurry of getting things done right after the first month of ownership(it really needed a deep clean, since the previous owner did not care much, and the dealer's "detail" department was less than optimal in their work on it), I decided to fix the major cosmetic issues rather than put money into performance mods. I had the front bumper, hood, hood scoop, and trunk lid repainted. Also had some surfaces buffed and small dents removed. The rest of the car could use a good buff and there are a few small rock chips here and there that I will be touching up myself, but other than that, the paint and clear coat is in good shape and it's a damn perfect car. I am very particular and detail-oriented, so this translates to my car.

As for my plans with it, it's a nice weather toy only. My goals are pretty modest and not attention-grabbing, so to some of you my journal may be somewhat boring and the upgrades may be rather slow since I won't be dumping all my money into it(read: not abusing it and racing irresponsibly).

I have a pretty well-thought out mod path and I know most of the parts that I want to put into it(but suggestions are welcome), so whatever the best power gains from the best possible tuning, I will be happy with. When I'm done upgrading, I'm shooting for somewhere between 330-380whp, but it won't be the easiest to obtain 320 on the 39. I will NOT be going rotated or FMIC probably ever. I want to retain responsiveness and drivability, so I will be staying with the stock turbo as long as I can, as well as the TMIC orientation. I know there's really not that much lag involved, but everyone goes rotated and FMIC around here and I'm not really looking for huge power. I want to be a bit different. Who knows, I may eventually consider an 18 or 20G though; would love to have a ball-bearing turbo. Too bad VF34's don't pop up very often! Most everything else is fair game. I do plan on replacing or upgrading much of the chassis and suspension components relatively soon.

As I said my journal may be boring to some and it will take some time for parts to go on it, but I welcome discussions on anything and like to talk technical, so have at it! I'm over on IWSTI under the same name.

More to come!!

So....I got the exhaust a week ago but due to being busy, I recently checked everything over. The box was quite torn up unfortunately, however I don't think it was from shipping, I just think whoever drop shipped it was sitting on this for a while. Also the two hanger mounts on the muffler are bent.

I emailed Cygnus Performance(this isn't their fault btw!) to see what they can do for me as far as a return for a better one. This is kind of a bummer since I jus got this and haven't even used it. Oh, and let's not forget it wasn't cheap either. I'm a name-brand fiend.

Here are some pics:

Let me just say that the welds are pretty nice, especially the machined ones. The finish is superb and you can tell there is quality all around. I'm just disappointed that mine isn't perfect. Obviously I can't post a review 'til next season of sound and fit, but you get the idea. Everything feels really solid in these pieces.

Below is the flange that meets up to the DP. Contrary to what others are saying, this is not a 2.5" taper, but instead it is 2.8". I originally was going to have a local shop cut this part out and replace it with a SS 3" portion.
I have since changed my mind as a) I don't believe there will be any noticeable restriction in .2" difference of diameter and b) I just don't want to hack up this gorgeous piece!

Onto the business end:

The last three pics show the bent hanger mounts, and the middle one shows the angle of distortion, as the pic was taken directly above the muffler.

There's a physical dent in the muffler at each weld spot from bending inward. Not cool.

People could say "Well why don't you just hammer it back into place?!" Well, I don't want to break the welds or anything. "Then just apply heat to it!!" I don't want to ruin the finish.

The mounts are supposed to be parallel to the ground by the way...woops!

I had a bent hanger on an Invidia g200... There is now a loud rattle after hammering back in place. I'm not sure if something was damaged inside the muffler.

Sucks about the exhaust. Those wheels are so freakin sweet. My favorite wheels ever, and the color goes so well with wrb. You have excellent taste!

^^Yeah, that's another reason I don't want to take a hammer to it....

^Yep, but I'm hoping Cygnus takes care of me though. Thanks for the compliment! The only thing is, I wish they were the bronze color, but I can't be too picky. They aren't flashy, but they look so good.

Again, it's been a while since I've been in here, but an update on the exhaust trouble:

After a long email conversation with Geoff @ Cygnus, it looks like I will be getting a replacement directly from Japan which may take up to two months to get to me since I was told I was the only one in the country with a brand new Spec Touring on his hands. Pretty cool, I think! That just makes it more "special" for my case! I'm not worried at all about the delivery time since the car is in storage. FedEx came to reclaim it this past Thursday, so now we play the waiting game.

I will say I am a bit concerned about the replacement though, seeing as how there was basically no damage protection packaging in the box I got. I hope/have faith that Blitz Japan actually packs their exhausts with better care, so I'm chalking this up to the distributor/FedEx for the lack of decent packaging/courier damage. I could tell that the distributor had been sitting on this piece for a while and that they probably threw out some of the original packing contents long ago. Anyone out there with a Blitz system that can chime in on this? How was yours delivered?

Again, Geoff @ Cygnus has been nothing but a great help and it's nice to know he treats his customers this way. I can say I will go back to him in the future!

Digging the SSR wheels. They are some of the best. Good luck on the exhaust.

That they are! Hey thanks! I've seen your journal over on IW and your car is quite impressive as well.

Recently went in on a group buy with 17 other people to get some ID1000 injectors for a great price that I just couldn't pass on, so now just waiting on delivery of those.

Girlfriend also got me a Killer B oil baffle and Cobb EBCS fitting kit for when I get the EBCS from them. She's great!

Small update:
Took delivery of some MAW Composite top-feed TGVs, '07 STi OEM fuel rails, lines and FPR. So all that's left is some extra bit of fuel hose, then it's E85 here I come!

Still have some other stuff I will be placing an order for soon, including the rest of my exhaust system with EWG, Fortune Auto coilovers, and other suspension bits. Speaking of exhaust.....my Blitz CBE still isn't here....sigh....

So I happened across this thread here for a set of lovely Gram Lights 57 Optimise for a decent price. I always have liked most GL designs and this one is a favorite. What do you guys think of WRB on these?? God I'm a sucker for wheels...

Going from those SSR wheels to the Gram Lights would be a downgrade IMO.

Car really looks great. I would have words with the shop that sprayed your rear bumper though. Overspray everywhere!

I was really going to keep both sets!

Thanks, I'm glad you think so.

The only thing I've had resprayed on the rear was the trunklid, and that shop pulled the lid off completely, otherwise yeah, I'd be pretty annoyed if someone thought that was an acceptable job. I never had the rear bumper resprayed(although I'd like to, there are some marks that bug me). Weird though, I was under the impression that some of the chassis comes slightly blue from the factory due to their paint process....

Thanks for the compliments guys, much appreciated!

Here's a small gripe:
So I call up the Blitz importer a couple weeks ago for a status update, they tell me to call that following Monday so they have a couple days to hear from Japan on where it is, because it was already supposed to be here. So I call the following Monday, only for them to tell me it hasn't even f***ing left Japan yet! I mean wtf?! Am I unreasonable?

So now they tell me early April is when I should see it. Good grief....I have bad luck.

Also they tell me I'm the only one who's reported a damaged Blitz exhaust since they started importing....I somehow doubt that.

I'll be getting the car out next Thursday, I can't wait!

I still have not gotten my Blitz exhaust from Japan yet, so I'm getting a little upset at how long this has taken. Sent out a couple emails, so now just waiting to hear back. What a pain in the ass this has been...

My basement flooded a few weeks ago so I've been trying to recover everything and get my house back in order. I'm still in that process and luckily none of the parts got ruined, but some original Subaru documentation and booklets that I got from a member over on IWSTI saw water damage....ugh.

Finally, she's back! ....with a picture too!

So I went and got the car Thursday. Some preliminary checks, pulled fuse, primed and started right up. Ran it around for a bit to warm 'er up; all seems in order and up to par. There is a tiny leak on the oil drain plug. Fuel seems to have stayed in tact mostly which is good, no shuddering idle or running, but I would still like to burn this tank and get some new fuel in.

Still waiting on my Blitz CBE of course, but once that comes in, I will be ordering a pile of parts and arranging for a couple tunes locally.
