Default How bad are your eyes? Prescriptions?

I've had my eye prescription on my fridge for a couple months with the good intention of buying new contacts and glasses at some point. As I was looking at it, I got to thinking, I know my eyesight is BAD, but I don't really know relative to the rest of the population. I've had to have some kind of correction since I was four, and get a discount on my contacts from my medical plan because my eyesight is "so bad" that contacts are considered a medical necessity over glasses rather than what would usually be considered simply a cosmetic difference over glasses. I do defintely see much better with contacts than when wearing my glasses.

So, if you know your prescription post it up, so we can all get an idea of how bad our eyes are.

Not that I actually know what these numbers are or even the units, but my prescription is written like this:

Code:
       SHPERE CYLINDER AXIS PRISM
O.D. -8.0 -3.0 22 --
O.S. –8.5 -1.75 167 --
Also, anyone who actually knows what these numbers mean in terms of physical eye differences?

wow, you're blind!

o.d (oculus dextrus) = right eye
o.s (oculus sinister)= left eye

---this part taken from http://www.seeclearly.com/prescript.cfm
The sphere measure tells the eye doctor whether light focuses on the retina, in front of the retina or behind the retina. Negative diopters indicate myopia, or nearsightedness. Positive diopters indicate hyperopia, or farsightedness. The higher the number, the stronger the prescription.

The cylinder measurement indicates whether or not the patient has astigmatism. If any number appears in the cylinder column, then some astigmatism is present. The higher the number, the more severe the astigmatism.

If astigmatism is present, then an axis measurement is also necessary. This measurement indicates the location of the astigmatism on the eyeball.

-------

So you've got a myopia of -8.0 with an astigmatism of -3 in the right eye, and -1.75 in the left eye.

I'm -2.25 in both eyes, and they say that number is in the low - medium range.

Basically, I can't see beyond 5 inches. I am so bad, I have to have the shampoo and stuff in an exact order, otherwise I wash my hair with my wife's face soap.

My mom is about almost twice as bad as me, plus she has started to need the bifocals. Her glasses are so messed up, when she looks at things, she is moving her head to figure out which part of the glasses to look through.

Laser surgery = next summer for me. It will be nice not to have a clock radio with a display that is less than two stories tall. Planes are trying to land in my driveway when the power goes out and it is blinking 12:00.

I can't wear contacts anymore. I had them, never slepped in them, but one day I woke up and my eye was swollen shut. Long story short, I got a corneal ulcer, left a big scar just below my iris. They were disposable contacts, too. Thank God for polymers (or whatever), my glasses are not 10 feet thick.

Wow...you're pretty much blind. I'm a former ABO Certified Optician....sold high end frames for a few years. Some people in the business joke that anyone over a -8 is a wacko....and the more over -8 they are, the weirder they are. Are you a strange one? You also have a pretty severe astigmatism in both eyes, especially your right. You might want to consider Lasik...it would definately benefit you greatly.

It honestly was true most of the time in customers I had.

The eye is so interesting...do some searches...

Useless fact: You probably see an optomitrist(sp) b/c most opthalmologists write their scripts in +cylinder. That means your script could also be
O.D. -11.00 +3.00 112
O.S. -10.25 +1.75 77.

Interesting eh.

Umm, yeah, I'm blind...

I can't see much more than vague spots of color without my glasses/contacts.

I know JUST what the guy means who was talking about shampoo/conditioner in the right spot, though I usually check before hand. Luckily the shampoo and conditioner I buy has conditioner in an inverse font to the shampoo bottle (shampoo written in black on the white bottle, conditioner uses solid black to make white letters)

My mom had laser eye surgery, but I was planning on buying a house first. I've heard mixed things about that kind of surgery with astigmatism. Her prescription was NOTHING like mine. She ended up getting it only in one eye, to have one "near" eye and one "far" eye. Talk about freaky funky (depth perception is fine, contrary to common belief, you adjust rather quickly)

One place where I got glasses about 6 years ago had a drawer for people picking up their glasses that was segregated by diopters. I was in the WAY back in the 7 and more bin. She was looking forever, and asked me how bad my eyesight was. I was like "BAD!" and she hadn't pulled the drawer out far enough. Mine were the only pair back there

Well, on average I spend more money each month on upgrade parts for my car than for food. Does that make me a wacko?

I also have a mole on the back of my eye (according to the optometrists I've had, not that I've seen it ) That probably contributes to my wacko-meter score.

I'm definitely not normal, but then again...who is?

OK I think I can take this one guys....

Sphere is a measurement of the refractive correction needed for the eye. Myopia, or a state in which the total focusing power of the eye is too strong, and light rays come to a focus IN FRONT of the retina is treated with MINUS lenses...essentially weakening the refractive power of the eye and allowing the light rays to focus on the retina. Hyperopia is the opposite. The focusing power of the eye is too weak and the light rays come to a focus BEHIND the retina. This is treated with PLUS lenses which essentially augment the focusing power of the eye.

Now think of the front of the eye as a clock. We'll call the line connecting 3 and 9 "180 degrees", and the line connecting 12 and 6 "90 degrees". What astigmatism means, is that the power needed to bring light rays in the 180 degree axis to a focus on the retina is DIFFERENT than that needed to bring light rays in the 90 degree axis. This is corrected by CYLINDRICAL lenses, which add power in one axis but not in the axis 90 degrees off from it (e.g. power in 180 degree axis, but none in 90)

Glasses prescriptions can be written with either minus or plus cylinders. Historically, ophthalmologists write in plus cylinders while optometrists and eye lab machinery work in minus cylinders. Thankfully the two are easily converted.

So a glasses prescription of -8.00 +2.00 x 90...

Is a spherical correction of -8 diopters, with a cylinder of 2 diopters added with it's axis at 90 degrees.

Oh and what's a diopter.

A diopter is a unit measure of the power of a lens. It's number is the reciprocal of the distance in meters that it focuses columnated light to.

Example= a +2 diopter lens focuses a columnated beam of light (not converging or diverging) to a point 1/2 of a meter (50 cm) from the lens. A +3...1/3 of a meter (33cm) and so on.

If anyone has any eye-related or optics-related questions...post em here...I should be able to answer all of them.

One more thing...if you are a -8 myope, you should have a regular dilated exam so your retina can be examined. High myopes are at greater risk for developing retinal tears and detachments. Similarly if you ever see a bunch of floating objects, flashes of light, or what looks like a curtain coming down or up over the side of your vision, go RIGHT AWAY to see a doctor, even if it means an emergency room, as these are signs of retinal tears and/or detachments.

i was born with a "lazy eye" and here are my stats...
WITHOUT glasses:
-20/20 left eye
-20/400 right eye... and that's no typo i do mean 400.
WITH glasses:
-20/20 left eye
-20/200 right eye
so i guess them glasses do help a bit.

Every year. My optimitrist FREAKED when I waited 2.5 years once. So I make sure to go every year now.

Also she likes to keep track of the mole I have on the back of my eye to make sure it doesn't grow.

I'd just like to say that examination SUCKS. Can't see right for like 4 hours. Luckily my O.D. is like a block from where I work, so I can walk back to work. Then hope to have meetings the rest of the day so that I can at least remain somewhat functional instead of sitting in my cube doing NOTHING (because reading or looking at my monitor just hurt)

I can ALWAYS see 'floaters' how do I distinguish the 'emergency' floaters from the normal everyday floaters?

This is always a pain to deal with. Many people see floaters, and myopes see more than others. Unfortunately, they are the ones at most risk. Basically I tell people that you know what is right for you. If you see the few floaters that you are used to on a regular basis, don't sweat it. If you should notice a large increase in the number or density of them (it's usually not a subtle change, kind of like going from 2 or 3 to 100), that's when you should seek care.

Annually is good. Once a year to have an annoying exam and be sure you don't have something potentially vision threatening isn't soooooo bad is it?

Same thing happened to me about a year ago....scariest day ever!!! My doctor looked into my eye, and said, "Oh!" Once the swelling had gone away (a few days), he told me my eye looked like a snow-globe from all the white blood cells in my eye!! Some things you don't wanna hear. no big scar, but I wear my contacts a lot less frequently now!

Contact lens related complications are a lot more common than people like to think...and if severe they can threaten vision and even loss of the eye. Bad news...

Ways to avoid disaster:

1. All the obvious stuff...wash your hands, don't overwear, use a clean case and sterile solutions. Replace disposable lenses at their prescribed intervals too, that's a commonly ignored recommendation.

2. Lower time that lenses are on your eyes. Update your glasses and get in the habit of taking your lenses off when you get home rather than before you go to bed. That can save 4+ hours a night. Add it up and it's a lot of time that you don't have them in. Lens related complications are related to the cumulative wear time. You do the math.

3. Regular eye exams. Can't be stressed enough. It's the best way to catch a small problem before it becomes a big one.

I love my lenses too...but make sure you take care of them properly

How much is laser surgery? And are there any conditions? I heard long time ago that if you were over -6.00 you couldn't do it. But maybe that was my mom trying to make me be careful with my eyes.

The price has gone way down since I did it. Now, figure about 2K/both eyes and up. Consultations are free so best go see a guy and ask those questions. I went to Caster eye Clinic in Beverly hills who has done many Laker players, stars, etc.
