My 03 stg 2 WRX lasted 11 years and 180K miles with no engine issues before I traded it in for my 15 stg 1 WRX that's on 93K miles with no engine issues either. I know lots of turbo engines have issues some through no fault of the owner but I wouldn't hesitate to get another turbo Subaru at this point.
As for the batteries, yeah the OEM sucks. I had the battery replaced after 3 years on my 15 under warranty as I believe there was a TSB for it. The next one lasted a bit longer but still not great. My wife's 14 Forester had batter issues too so I replaced the OEM with an aftermarket.
