Let me tell a story. I've of late gotten into offroading with a regional Jeep club. One of the first upgrades I made was to swap the tires from some OEM Wrangler AT-T basically all seasons for some Dick Cepec Extreme Country. These are big lug, soft rubber offroad dedicated kinda tires (like buying Hooser R's if I were buying track tires). On one particularly difficult hill where the runup simply wasn't....it was mud with scattered boulders then a 90 degree turn up the hill..... a brand new Rubicon on BF Goodrich mud terrains was unable to get up the hill in about 10 tries. Now, the Rubicon comes stock with 2 lockers, so you hit some buttons and all 4 tires pull you up the hill. I came around the corner and up the hill I went. My Jeep has an OEM rear limited slip and open front. The point? Tires are everything when it comes to traction.

So what kinda tires to get for the winter? Winter tires. I'm not a brand/model fanboi and am not above buying craigslist tires from someone who went one season then sold the car (am off to do that this weekend for the wife's 17 Legacy since I just found out it doesn't have 5x100). Blizzaks, Graspix, Something Ice, Winterforce....they'll all do better than all season tires.

I agree with the point Jack's story makes and have experienced similar. I had RE92 on my 02 WRX and got stuck on a hill with front wheel drive cars passing me! I thought AWD was all I needed, WRONG! Since that day I make the switch to winter tires. The link above is what I had on my STI which has been sold for one of those newfangled Rubicon's Jack is referring to.

Mmmmmm... yeti. I'm still rocking an ol' Remedy 8 though... and I use the word "rocking" loosely. I had an online love affair with Ibis for awhile but never could get myself to pull the trigger.

Just snagged the mrs a set of 215/65/16 Cooper Weather Masters on Crosstek wheels for her '12 Impretzel last night. I figure they'll self clearance. $400? Thank you very much.

Bimmer blew apart the front driveshaft last fall during an aggressive merge onto 3 north. The wheel speed spensors get a little pissy when you don't run a front shaft but no harm is done so I haven't fixed her. She gets sidelined on the $hitty days and I take the truck (w/ an aftermarket LSD I added in 2015 to Jack's point..).

Appears Friday may be a truck day...

Generally 1st snow of the year,

Schools close super early taking a conservative stance.
People forget how to drive (first few times)
People remember they need new tires becuase their all seasons weren't bald last year, yet.

So, you have a crapload of crazy out there. Be careful and cautious.

I'm working in WNY (near Niagara Falls, and driving back to NEPA on weekends), and we're getting regular daily small accumulations which don't last on the road much but still build up enough on vehicles to need melting off before driving. Thankfully it looks like folks have all already equipped winter tires.

Hopefully the same is true back home.

Driving back to Boston, first snow of last year, came up upon a guy in a 3 series BMW going 20mph in the left hand lane.

Snows go on tomorrow. We've gotten an inch here and there at Sunapee, nothing in Boston.

I know a guy who just got a Vishnu Stg2 turbo kit with TEC-2. That RS is crazy fast, just ran a 14.5 at 95mph...runs like 12lbs of boost

You seem to know a lot about cars - would you recommend investing in an aftermarket megaphone for winter safety?

I hear it's a great tool, you can help direct pedestrians away from oncoming traffic and alert other cars of your presence.

Yo, he must using a ProECM to get times like that. A Zeiner diode messes with the voltage range too much for it to run correctly.

Default Dunlop Graspic DS-3

One winter living in NewEng with AWD+turbo (DSM and WRX) very quickly persuaded me that winter tires were essential (and a lot of fun).

I've tried a bunch of different types depending on deals available, etc. and the only ones I've returned to twice are Dunlop Graspics.
They're certainly not the best snow tire out there but for the price they are great value, work well, and last more than 2 seasons.

I actually have a set of 4 original 2004 WRX rims with 205/55R16 Dunlop Graspic DS-3s that have seen 2 seasons and on them and will make it through this season without any worries available right now. I have nothing to put them on due to this unfortunate deer related incident

PM me if interested and can pickup from Lakes Region of NH

If you only knew how much money that decision cost me in the long run.

Is that pronounced "Zeener," "Ziner," or "Zeenyay?"

Lol, not sure if you remember a shop called TRI Tuning in NJ.

Anyway, I got a 'turbo-kit' setup on my first 2.5RS...let's just say I would've been better off burning the money to make smores.

It's almost hilarious in hindsight that anyone even bothered trying to turbo that NA 2.5 but there really was no aftermarket or other options to speak of at the time.

Shouldn't those aftermarket turbo kits have been called "Burn a hole in your piston" kits?

This. Though I did run them in the winter. And ice raced them

Somebody here from Maine crashed their Outback on the way out of the dealer lot.

I drove mine 4 miles to the tire dealer and sold the set for $100.

You're Dad had the right idea when he suggested we should have just traded cars instead of swapping parts!

I think he was referring to your M Coupe when he said that... not the RS.

Ay tell me about it. I tried using a ProECM and EManage Ultimate on a homebrew td04 turbo kit.
The injector tables would literally reset to 0 after a few cycles.

Would have been more useful to eat/smoke the money.

I was thinking of removing my Subaru front grille badge and changing / painting the color around the Subaru stars? Anyone ever do that?
I hear a rear sway bar will make the car a death trap so I think I’m going to do the emblem and change all my front bulbs to those new PIAA ones? Thoughts?
