Engine Replacement: 9K. Options.
Yesterday, after shifting into 3rd gear while merging onto the highway (probably around 5k RPM), I started hearing a bad knocking sound from the engine. It got worse as I applied very little throttle at around 2 to 3k rpms. After 3k rpms the knocking seemed to subdue.
I got home, shut it off and re-started the engine. Upon starting you can hear it very loud. The same if I rev the engine at around 2 to 2.5K RPMs. I took it to the dealer (CitySide Subaru), they refuse I speak to the mechanic (surprise). Anyway, they quote silly money to replace the engine. 2,600 to inspect it and then see what can be done. In anycase, I don't think I will be having them do the job so my next question is to the community! What shops would you guys recommend for such a job? Boxer motor works (salemautomotiverepair.com) looks good. PM me if you prefer. Sad panda

If you're under tight time constraints to get the car back on the road then you may be out of luck, but I'd suggest reaching out to Matt Miner. He and Jimmy do a lot of engine swaps, did a solid job with mine earlier this year. http://mattminer.com/ There are of course other options, to get any real input these days you'd be best off posting on Facebook.
Whatever you do, avoid Broken Boxer Repair, they will likely under deliver and leave you in a worse mess than you're in now. http://www.brokenboxersucks.com |

My friend's shop out in Pepperell does great, professional work. He has a lot of subaru experience including building his own RSTI as well as many other builds.
It's hard for places to earn my trust as I do the work myself but this is one of the few places that I trust. Previously this small list would have only included Dent Sport Garage and Ted D (nhsilversti). http://www.holmesauto.net/ I did my RSTI swap there as well. |

A spun bearing repair is a short block + full head service + replacing every oiling component in the system. Done correctly, its $4k-$5k in parts alone. We do them all the time, its pretty consistent in terms of what is required. But yeah, you can do far better in terms of quality than the dealership.

Bit of a hike from Boston, but Wicked Performance in NH replaced the engine in my '08 Legacy GT after cyl 4 decided to call it quits at 130k and did a great job.
All in, cost me about the same as the quote you got from the dealer, but that included a built shortblock with forged pistons, rebuilt heads, AOS, VF52, aftermarket downpipe, fuel pump, etc etc, along with a bunch of small misc things like gaskets, bolts, replacing bad injectors and other parts that go bad around that mileage. Not inexpensive by any means and I could have saved some money doing the labor myself, but given that it was my DD and not one of my project cars I needed it up and running sooner rather than later. With a tune from Bren and with a stock catback it made 285/302 at the wheels. Not a powerhouse, but definitely a fun daily driver. |

It really sucks. I love this car, and I can not get anything with this combination of practicality and fun anymore. Finding a 3.6R manual is proving to be difficult so I may do the non-rational thing and fix this car. |

Wicked Tuning in Manchvegas built my WRX motor. Excellent work.

Our 2006 Outback 3.0R is the best car I've ever owned. Currently 230,000 miles and climbing. It has the VTD drive system (like the XT) and 5EAT (manual not sold here), so I doubt a conversion would be cost effective. FWIW we drag raced an XT (closed course, professional driver) when new. They were very close until 70mph, then the XT pulled away. 3.0R can burn Regular and can tow more, but there are almost no tuning parts available. Last edited by Garandman; 12-22-2018 at 07:46 PM. |
