Default slow autometer boost gauge?

So I finally put the autometer boost gauge and dual pod up (minus one gauge... GHETTO) but the autometer gauge seems VERY slow to respond.. is this just a symptom of a cheap (Money, not quality) guage? the factory gauge was insant.. if I hit 15psi it read it instantly and when i came off the throttle it instantly read vaccum... the autometer gauge shows boost quickly enough but it's definitely not instant, the easy way to see it so slow though is to let off the gas and you can watch it return to vaccum...

don't get me wrong, it's not like it's CRAWLING but to go from full boost to full vaccum i bet takes more than a second, maybe 1.5...

any thoughts?

did you use the same hose from the factory unit? if so the factory guage might be a bit more sensative than the autometer. What I am saying is they may have put a restrictor in the hose to make the factory guage not break or something. put a brass splicing barb on one end of the hose and buy some new hose and pull the whole thing through and try with different hose. Just a suggestion.

The vacume line going to the gauge may be slightly pinched. That's the only thing I can think of providing you used the same connection as the stock guage.

I used the exact hose that the stock one was using, and used a couple to mate it to autometers lame vinyl hosing... No leaks or anythning, just fairly slow to react... what about length of hose? make any difference? I have NOT trimmed the stock hose or the length that came with the autometer gauge (I still have to go pick up the right couplers) so it's traveling through probably 8-12ft of hose

I almost ran an entirely new line but it was late, i was really tired and didn't want to ;P

that's probably the problem, mating the stock hose to the autometer vinyl line. I'd change that out as my first step.

If you use the vinyl line all the way from the BOV expect it to be slow. I also have and auto meter guage, but I used a rubber line 3/4 of the way and then used the nylon for the rest. My guage is very sensative and reacts instantaneously.

I just put an autometer guage in, using the nylon hose, and its pretty crappy. It reacts fast enough, I just don't think its that acurate. +/-2 psi probably. For $70 I think that its just a matter of getting what you pay for.

nah, I am using the rubber line from the bov through the FW (the one that was on the stock gauge) and am using the 6ft vinyl line from there... Like Isaid I haven't cut the vinyl line yet because i don't have all the proper connectors...

as far as being accurate, it's spot on... like with in .1psi for me... (according to my ECU anyway) the one thing that is NOT accurate is vaccum, but i don't know if this because the ECU only reads to a certain point of vaccum or not...

the gauge will read -20psi on deceleration the ecu seems to stop at -9.9 no matter what

so either the gauge is accurate or it's WAY WAY WAY off on vaccum

Yeah, I think it might be ok with boost, I just noticed its all over the place with the vaccum readings. You can tap on it, and it will move all over. Just my experience.
I think the stock one is a better piece.

I would agree the stock gauge is probably a better quality gauge, it better be for that price.... However it's too small and it's location is crappy as hell

Z, i had trouble with my connections on my auto meter @ first, too... rather then connect the vinyl and factory rubber, i picked up 1 dual female and 1 male/nipple (like thi : \\\======>) bronze pieces from auto zone, i believe 1/8", so i eliminated the auto meter crap entirely, and i feel no delay in mine. im only using about 3 feet of rubber "fuel line" from auto zone.

hope i helped

I dont see why people dislike Autometer so much. I have seen tests comparing them to others such as HKS, Defi, GReddy, and so on and they all posted the same readings, alot of professional race teams use them so if they were that bad teams like that would use other stuff because god knows they have the money to.

the vinyl hoses only benefit as far as i can tell is that it's rigid so it's less prone to being kinked and it's very think so it's easy to run down a pillar and hide.... I'll try redoing the hose, probably when i install whatever other guage i'm going to put there... see if that fixes it...

Speaking of Autometer Boost gauge!

My needle fell off of my boost gauge the other day. I was just driving along and hit my normal 40psi and the damn thing just fell off. I was wondering if these gauges are repairable or not?

J/K about the psi, I didn't see it fall off, I didn't notice till the other day.

You can get the bezel off you just have to be very careful. once the bezel is off then the hard part begins putting the bezel back on. Seriously it can be done just take your time.

talking about the needle.....mine fell off sometime back. Autometer replaced it free of charge. I reads accurately (my opinion)....I have the carbon fiber series gauges by the way......

Figured it out...... Happened to be in for an oil change, and was talking to the tech, complaining that my boost gauge was now slow.... he suggested that maybe i'd want to run a new line, and i was like, man that blows, it's a pain in the ass, he then suggested "Well, why don't you take out the factory coupler that restricts the airflow to the stock gauge?"

i said... "What what what?"

sure enough, about 3-4" off of the BOV there is a factory coupler/reducer that restricts the airflow to the rest of the line and couples the two hose pieces together... it was impossible for me to see because it was fitted so tightly that it looked like a single piece of hose, we removed that, and pulled back some of the slack from the factory gauge line and plugged it straight into the BOV line .... and blam, instant response, works perfectly...

couldn't believe it.... oh well, glad it's fixed now... and it's STILL running through more than 12 feet of vacuum hose... i'll clean that up now that I know what was causing the problem.

Hey everyone from the past!

I just installed an auto meter pro comp ultralight mechanical boost gauge in my 2006 WRX TR. It seemed a bit slow when I installed it, but I compared it to my Accessport V3 and it is accurate.... just slowwwwww...

I'm going to swap hoses and see if it responds quicker. I'm currently using 1/4 in fuel hose with a barbed T coming off the bpv and into the throttle body. But using the nylon 1/8 in rigid hose from the bpv to the gauge.

As for the -20 / -9.9 dilemma I also noticed that and thought it was broken.

My vacuum on the gauge is in "inHg" not psi. 30 inHg is 1 atmosphere or 15psi

20 inHg is 2/3 of an atmosphere. 10 psi is also 2/3 of an atmosphere so if your units are different (like mine) then it's accurate.

EDIT: I removed the gauge from the A pillar and lo and behold, the nylon hose was kinked in 2 places right where it attaches to the compression fitting.

I must have kinked it when I pushed the gauge all the way in. I have about 1 ft of hose spiraled in the pod so it's easy to remove the gauge if needed.

Now it works great and is quick to respond.
