News Porsche May Nix the Manual Soon

http://www.carbuzz.com/news/2013/2/2...-Soon-7713024/

Quote:
Ferrari has already done so, Lamborghini has too, and now it appears Porsche will also drop the manual gearbox entirely within a few years' time.

With nearly 80 percent of buyers opting for the PDK dual-clutch gearbox over a manual transmission for popular models like the 911 and Cayman, Porsche has recently admitted outright that the conventional manual could be dropped entirely in just a few years. Speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald, Porsche’s R&D chief Bunno Brandlhuber stated that "There are some Porsche enthusiasts who prefer a manual and we will continue to offer this in the meantime.... But maybe one day it will become irrelevant."

With the ratio of PDK to manuals sold continuing to rise in dual-clutch's favor, and rumors that even the track-focused GT3 will go PDK in its newest iteration, how much time has the three-pedal gearbox got left in Stuttgart? It may be too early to say, but legendary rally champion and Porsche test driver Walter Rohrl recently said that he "doesn’t need a manual gearbox anymore. The PDK shifts perfectly and I don’t have to do anything."
aaaaaaaaaaaaand.... go.

I am here to start the complaining, big surprise!

Far be it for me to question Walter Rohrl, but if I were a race car driver I would want a PDK as well. For a street car, I feel entirely different. I want to do something. I want to be engaged in the driving process more than flicking an index finger to shift. If I am racing at LeMans, then no, I want to conserve as much energy as possible and let the car work for me. I love a slick manual gearbox.

Porsche you disappoint.

Lets be honest, Porsche has been in the business of building status symbols for a while now. This should not be a surprise.

That also happen to be incredibly capable sports cars. This sucks. I've driven several of the new-fangled transmissions and they're neat. But I still like to shift gears.

Oh well, major white people problems here.

I'm in the minority of people who aren't impressed. I thought my EVO drove better and didn't cost $100k either. I think the 911 would be nice at a base price of $60k well equipped but it's not so great around $90k.

The extra $50k over the evo is to pay for the no back seat.

Full disclosure: I want a Porsche
Fuller disclosure: I have no emotional attachment to manual gear selection. Better performance and safer with a dual clutch. Bring on the future...

Porsche does like to charge you more for removing stuff. My friend is buying a 991 in the next year or two so I went with him to test drive them. It's a nice car but I'm not enamored with it like he is. Maybe if I drive one for a while I'd change my mind.

In my view, the only reason people care so much about The Manual is as penis compensation. Thanks for reinforcing...

I would like for you to tell me why a dual Clutch is SAFER?

faster, fine.
Easier, fine.
Less involving, fine
But safer?.. now that is just reaching for fruit that does not exist.

While I don't agree with it, I fully understand. Just like Ferrari and Lamborghini they're image is to build some of the most capable and well engineering vehicles for the road. PDK transmissions are faster and more accurate than by hand, therefor for a performance car they're the next logical step.

I just don't agree with it emotionally. I'll keep rowing my own gears thanks. If I'm in a 500,000 dollar race machine then I want a floppy-paddle trans. If I'm enjoying my car outside of a race series I want to be the one to choose what gear I want, when I want. I'll keep the h-pattern.

Stalling. ECU controlled will remove human error. You can also make the argument you never have to remove your hands from the wheel and you only have to concentrate on 2 pedals instead of 3.

Stalling, really.

Man, I think I have stalled my cars perhaps 2 times in the past 15 years.
I can make the arguement that since you only need one hand to drive you could be more distracted holding a burger or putting on make up. Being involved makes you safer. Being less involved makes you more apt to fiddle with crap, text, and look for stuff.

Both arguements are equally without a hint of evidence or weight. Like I said, safer is a reach, but quicker and easier, I have to concede.

While I enjoy my standard transmissions, as the number of ratios expand, and the programming and technology comes along, automated dual cluch manuals are the ticket. As these transmissions expand to 7,8,9+ ratios, you don't want to be rowing that many gears.

I have embraced as the video game generations get behind the wheel the manual will die out. It is sad knowing that kids do not want the fun of rowing thier own gears. Very sad.
But you cannot take away technology once it is out there and marketed as 'better'.

So with that all I can say is buy an old classic and have a ball with it. Some things are better and as enjoyable when they are simple and pure.

Thumbs down

Manual transmissions are dying off & frankly in 10 years they probably won't exist all together.
Yes = they are Faster.
Yes = they are the "Future".

Yes = I do prefer driving a car/truck with a manual. I like it better.

However, it cracks me up to see the nonsense posted about "why" the preference for manuals.

Anyone claiming that people who still prefer manuals are doing so for any other lame reason -while completely ignoring the joy & satisfaction of executing a perfectly timed shift - clearly have:

a) never learned how to properly drive a manual
or
b) are just out to bait drama on the internet

---------------

I can't afford a new Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini so this news doesn't affect me at all thankfully.

I find it quite exhilarating when I think I'm about to upshift down into 6th gear, but I actually go into 4th. Children of the future will never know this feeling.

I mean safer for the car.

A manual can shift from fourth to third and blow the engine.

A manual can be driven poorly and trash a clutch.

A manual can grind gears...

I drove a 991S with PDK and it was great. Still haven't driven a manual 991 to compare, but I see why people are moving away from manuals.
