well, it all started when i went to the local subaru dealership for a trans/diff drain and refill. they carried the oem fluid, so i figured i couldn't go wrong. but apparently, it's some new semi-synthetic that costs almost $29/quart, so yeah... eff taht! they couldn't quote me at less than $260. in fact, to be good sports, they actually called another local dealership, and got me a quote from them while i was standing right there. they carried some oil that's a little over $8/quart, but for some reason, they STILL couldn't beat the price of $260...

anyways, i went out and got a two-ton jack/jack-stand/creeper kit and some funnels. i figured if i couldn't get oem fluid, then uncle scotty's cocktail was my next best bet. however, i am trying to get this done for saturday's streets of willow track day, and after trackin down the synchromesh and hypoyd, all i could find for the shockproof was superlight.

has anyone used the superlight in the cocktail? how does it compare? will it affect the amount of time before i have to change it out? i know the regular cocktail is every 15-20k to keep it like buttah . any feedback is appreciated.

You can get Redline Shockproof for around $8/qt (including shipping!) from Summit Racing.

I put Shockproof Superlight in in June, and I've been really happy with it. Only issue is that it's sometimes fickle about going into reverse. Everything else is way better, though, so it's a fair trade in my mind.

$29 a quart is very, very expensive for gear oil - even the ester based synthetics typically run $15 a quart!

It'd be pretty funny if it was just valvoline 75w90 and they were marking it up to make a buck, though...

$260 for a transmission oil change? Holy profit! For that money you can get the Uncle's cocktail, all the required tools, and a season's supply of garage beer.

Hey, it's tough work for the dealership to put that car up on the lift and unscrew the one bolt holding in the tranny fluid!

FWIW, the last 15K miles I've been running on Redline's 75w90ns with no grinding problems whatsoever. My second best was 1qt of synchromesh fluid and the rest Mobil1 75w90 synthetic, but I would get grinding around the time it needed to be changed. Straight Mobil1 is terrible, and I wasn't too thrilled with Royal Purple, either.

1qt LW shockproof
2.8qts of MT-90

there is an WRX up here that uses:
1qt HD Shockproof
2.8qts MT-90

i use LW in the tranny and HW in the rear diff. i changed it 2 weeks ago for the cold weather and it has smoothed out the shifting, not to mention quieted some typical 02 tranny noises.

well, just did the change myself. went with superlightweight, simply becausei wanted to get this done before my track day saturday, and i literally had too many other commitments to order anything or stop by another store.

yeah, in retrospect, i wish i had just paid the dealer to do it... no, i'm kidding. man, talk about robbery.

i'm a day late and a few dollars short, but you shoulda hit up the super autobacs in stanton. i spent a couple weeks looking for some lightweight shockproof and i finally found it there. google autobacs usa for the URL and prepare yourself for some jdm-induced stickershock.
