I would NOT do that!!!!

The 5mt holds 3.7qt on a DRY fill......there is no way you got all the old lube out....and that means you likely have almost 4.5qt in it NOW

the 5mt likes being a BIT over-filled...but you are already WAY past THAT

why is that? i would have thought the more "submerged" the gears are the better - but i know very little of how gearboxes work so...

overfilling can cause the fluid to foam up in the trans and the rear end....this is bad for several reasons...the main one being foam wont lubricate properly....it also accelerates oxidation of the fluid among other things

WAY OVERFILLING IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.....and this is just ridiculous

i know right?

no crunching into first gear anymore either!

if i can't ever get my hands on the pennzoil synchromesh, is there an alternative to it on the market i could use (amsoil make something labelled synchromesh) or failing that, a cocktail you could recommend that doesn't have the synchromesh?

if i can't get my mits on it and the amsoil stuff is rubbish, i was thinking of doing a 1qt heavyweight, 1qt hypoy and the rest with gear 300, but if you recommend something else i'll stick with that.

even just the 1qt heavyweight/2.5qt gear 300 is great.

Consider using Redline 75W90 NS as a replacment for the Penn Synchromesh.

It MUST be the NS version of this fluid (there is a "non" -NS FYI).

I used it as a replacement to the Synchromesh (which isn't available in my country). Has similar properties (in terms additives, or lack thereof) compared to the Synchromesh.

My 2c.

Fair enough.

But what about the effective viscosity of the heavyweight? Doesn't RL say tha the Hweight Shockproof is something like an 80W140 gear oil or something like that? Seems rather thick...and in my layman's perspective, isn't thick a bad thing for notchy synchros? Or am I off my rocker?

IIRC, the Superlight and Lightweight Shockproof still fall in the *w90 range?

That said, I've had good experience with both Superlight AND Lightweight in the mix (I actually favour the Superlight). Keep in mind my daily temps are around 35-37 deg CELCIUS (not sure if this affects anything).

Thanks. I know I could have ordered it, but I wanted to purchase some today while I have a chance. No where within a reasonable driving distance carries it.

Instead, I might go with 1 qt. of synchromesh, and the remaining 2.7 quarts HypoyC (3.7 quarts total for 5mt?). I could go buy that today and have it done tomorrow.

Drove 20 min for HypoyC and all they have is 85-140 -_-

They do have some warren brand gear oil though. Any thoughts on that stuff anyone?

Stores have nothing around here

for the old cocktail yes.

but for us international customers getting our mits on this stuff isn't so easy. i can find NOWHERE in australia with the pennzoil and i can't find an online retailer i can get it from either. i can only find the amsoil synchromesh - no idea if that's any good as an alternative or not.

i can however get heavyweight shockproof and an alternative brand of hypoy.

It's hysterical. When you go to Amazon and select one of the three components it says "Frequently Bought Together":

This item: Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid, quart (3501) by Pennzoil $9.99
Castrol - Hypoy C Gear Oil, quart (12609) by Castrol $9.99
Red Line 58404 Lightweight Shockproof Gear Oil by Red Line $14.99

Looks like Amazon has an inadvertent package already.

5 spd gearsets use the "splash" method. As hlh of the gears are basically submerged (3.7qts) as the gear spins, the teeth pick up the fluid and splash it around inside the transmission. That is how everything gets lubricated. And Subaru Extra S in the transmission and read diff FTMFW. Mixing oils

Default Doubts/Questions about the cocktail

I just bought a 02 WRX with 105k on it, as noted in above replys, first gear is a bit of a pain to get into and reverse is worse. The dealer replaced the fluids when it came in (less than 200 miles ago). I found the grimmspeed cocktail, is that one to try out? I'm new to subaru's. And I've been reading on this forum and others that the cocktail can have negative effects instead of positive. I've been told by my cousin (who works on Subaru's) that the cocktail is the best for the 5 speed trannys. I'm just really apprehensive about trying it out. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Well bub, keep in mind I do NOT live in the US.

The alternative with the RL 75W90NS fluid was arrived at based on what was available locally, since I had severe gear grind during shifts, and my '02 wrx was my only means of transport at the time. I needed a quick solution, and the SUperlight and NS were the only fluids available in my country (aside from 80W90 Hypoy C). Shipping in fluids would have taken me about 4 weeks, plus another 2 weeks to clear customs.

And the mix worked flawlessly.

I'm not saying it's right - I'm saying it worked for ME, given my constraints.

/fin.

(P.S. I ended up taking part in an Extra-S group buy, so that's what replaced the mixture for long term use).
