Default Former BMW designer Bangle takes on new task of designing Samsung gadgets

Quote:
Korean consumer electronics company Samsung is said to be the new home of former BMW designer Chris Bangle. He is most recognized for his work on the E65 7-Series but claims credit for the styling of many recent models from BMW such as the original X5 crossover, E90/E92 3-Series, the Z4 Roadster, and the new 1-Series. The E65 was criticized for its bulbous styling and “Bangle Butt” trunk but it had become BMW’s best-selling 7-Series to date.

The model took a mid-cycle facelift to make the look more subtle but throughout its six-year product cycle, it had remained a polarizing design. Bangle subscribed to the Deconstructivist design philosophy, which focuses on the manipulation of surface areas with non-rectilinear shapes.
Samsung is mostly known for its televisions and mobile phones but it has begun to expand into the tablet computer market with its Galaxy Tab line. Samsung’s move to hire Bangle points to its intention to be considered as a design leader.

Hiring bangle and you want to be a design leader... Man, seems this guy is made of teflon, nothing sticks to him. In most professions designers have to pay for their mistakes.

All the Asian brands copied his style. They all looked ugly to me though.

Car enthusiasts (including myself) are the only ones that didn't like his design.

But even I am starting to see the impact of his team's design language. I think the first generation of flame surfaced BMW's were overdone, but the later iterations, both by BMW and others, are really looking pretty decent.

The "owner" of Samsung is a big car lover. I wonder if this has anything to do with his personal preference.

I think this signals that Samsung is looking for some originality. They may have found the right guy.
