Default firewall

Now, if you haven't already done so, immediately install a firewall - harware router and ZoneAlarm type software firewall.

My best recommendation: Linksys BEFSR41, assuming you have an ethernet connection to your PC, not USB. Get 'em at Best Buy, about 70 bucks, cheaper on the internet.

All of my remote users with VPN access to our network are required to have the Linksys. You also gain a switched network, 4 ports total, yada yada.

some people are paraniod. the chance of malicious access to your system is very remote.

i have a cable modem and leave my computer on 24/7 always connected to the internet. no firewall, never had a problem. firewalls tend to be system hogs so i will never use one, being the mmo game addict that i am.

i do know of 1 person about 6 years ago that had his fat file deleted by a malicious entry. but thats the only bad story i've heard and i have known alot of geeks over the years. and for people who dont know, the fat file is like an address book for everything on your harddrive. w/o it, its like having a factory stock hd again.

My preference is for the SMC Barricade. A little harder to find but a quality piece of work.

You also gain a network printer port (parallel, not USB though).

Don't you believe it! My firewall has logged many attacks, as has every one of my employees who have broadband. We all have SMC Barricades.

And, so has my corporate router.

Sooner or later you WILL be found and penetrated. Most of the time it is not malicious ... for you. What the attacker will do is take over part of your computing resources to launch denial of service and other attacks on other people.

If your computer takes part in a denial of service attack, even unwittingly, you can be held liable if (when) found.

so i just quickie downloaded the free zonealarm thing on their website...just for now.

I dont' need to chase anyone down, just keep them out...it logged every ping from every isp that pinged me...18 in all, 6 considered hostile...

it really feeds the paranoia...

Good decision. I prefer a hardware solution as it has less impact on my system -- a software solution will consume some memory and CPU. Plus I only have to manage one firewall for my entire network (2-4 computers at home) instead of installing and managing ZoneAlarm (or whatever) on every computer.

But ZoneAlarm will work.

I've got a P2-400...The system is dead already...

I've only got the one computer. (there will be a second happening)...it MAY get connected to the internet...it'll mostly be used for slot car timing.

The computer is used to surf the net...I dont' even play games anymore...that may change. Other than that, it just uses electricity.

Computers are toys, not life (don't tell my software engineer brother). I'll be out in the garage synchronizing the carbs on my porsche now.

I didnt have a firewall at home for the longest time. Worked great for about a year, then I found some guy one day using my box as a warez server, hehe. After that I locked it down and just kept all the warez! worked out for me
