Very true, I run a STi muffler on my car... and I am debating about cutting her open and doing a custom job inside. Do you all think it would be possible to re-seal the muffler once I hack it up for a more free flowing design? That is, if its not already, but I was thinking some 3'' pipe

i dont have the time to cut open my stock muffler (STI)

but anyone on long island is more than welcome to come get it to cut it open, no you cant just have it


i think i have an 05 wrx muffler, and definatly an 04 sti muffler... they are the same i think aside from the sti's tip saying STi

Anything can be done if you can weld.

The pipe is different in size 2 1/4 vs 2 1/2, but someone should take him up on the offer and grab that thing. Cut'er open and post some pics!

Whelp... unless you are good with stainless, this might be out of some folks price range. Cost me $100 at a local shop since none of my friends had gas to do stainless. Thought it was going to be $20, but ended up taking a couple of hours to put it all back together. Might be better if you leave the baffles in to help with shape... I will get some movie clips with my set up (2.0 wrx with helix up-pipe, turbo-xs catless with the v1 muffler, modded stock, and also a straight pipe (!)). Stay tuned.

I have acquired a replacement axleback and started my WRX muffler hack project last night. sfjohnson's suggestions have been noted. I am planning on using a no-weld method to seal it up when I'm finished. I will try to work on sound clips, too, but that may be a stretch for me. I am taking pics along the way.

Yes, what ohnoes! said. Probably not completely like ass, but my guess is with an open-top gutted muffler about an inch-and-a-half away from that heat shield, things will get noisy. Probably even noisier than an open midpipe with the axleback removed. I actually found the open midpipe to be a hair quieter than the ride5000 mod (blah,blah - please refrain from sending me more death threats regarding that one).

I had a quick idea to do dudical26's suggestion and install the unit without sealing it up. However, it's winter here, and there would be very obvious exhaust vapor bleeding out around the muffler body. So, I will not install the unit without closing the access hole.

Today I hope to fab up a different cover. I already made one and it fits fine, but I left it in the oven just a little too long, and it has some heat scarring. Today I plan on making a more cosmetically pleasing cover, and completing the gutting process. If things go well, I will install the temporarily sealed unit tonight.

has anyone compared the cfm of a stock muffler with the cfm of some aftermarket ones?

YEAH I SAW THEM DO IT ON MONSTER GARAGE ONE TIME i tried it as well your cuts are mint though i used a cutting wheel and it lookede like crap also how does it sound now

Eeesh... Good idea. That makes sense. What would you need to measure cfm? ...hand dyno or arm hair dyno?(both sense different velocities of air movement, but are not very accurate)... hee hee. Seriously, a cfm chart would be a good thing to put together.

I'm too far along to do that with mine now. I have the short velocity stack thing out and the perforated inlet pipe out. I will hang it up for tonight, as I need to ponder my tool situation for my next move.

I wonder how much the internal design of the '05+ WRX muffler (single large tip) changed from the '02-'04 (dual tips).
