Default WRC: no S2000+ for 2010, 1600cc+turbo in 2013


The new generation World Rally Cars won't run with turbochargers until 2013, when 1600cc engines could power them, according to Motorsport News.

Plans to base the new look machines on existing Super 2000 models with a bolt-on kit of performance parts - including a turbo - have been dampened down until the worldwide economy shows signs of recovery.

Instead, Super 2000 cars will begin to replace the current World Rally Car from next season and will be used as standard from 2011. But rather than feature a raft of tweaks, which had been approved by the World Motor Sport Council, they will run a normally aspirated engine and incorporate minor bodywork changes to differentiate their appearance from current S2000 models. Their engines will be limited to 8500rpm, while standard S2000 engines will run to 8000rpm.

The 1600cc engines, which will be turbocharged, have been favoured because they will be mass-produced by manufacturers in the future and, according to the FIA, will be cheaper to run. They are likely to be introduced from the 2013 season but could appear at the back end of 2012 if the WRC adopts a winter calendar.

However, the changes to the technical regulations, which were discussed by the WRC Commission in a meeting in Paris last week, now require World Council approval. This is expected to be forthcoming when the body meets next month

The way the new promoter made it sound, no special gearboxes for the S2000 WRC cars. If that's the case would it be worth subaru coming up with a NA car to compete? The prospect only sounds worse for ol' Blue when tey switch to super1600+. I liked the idea of S2000 and S2000+ but I don't know how I feel about the 1600 cars

S2000+ never made any sense since the S2000 motor is designed from the ground up to be NA. I don't know if an arbitrary 1.6L size will be as successful as the long standing 2 Liter rule that was in line with the tax tipping point for most cars in the world over the last 30 years.
