How good is the average good? In what specific area?

Check trans fluid condition and level as according to manual. Burnt fluid is dark and smells well...burnt believe it or not. Metal filament looking particles are a sure sign of wear too. Get a sample of clean dextron for color comparison. Use a white card or white cardboard piece (something opaque and white). Achieve operational temp through driving, shift through all positions and then to park. Let idle for a few ticks and turn off and check level. (or similar)

Delay is not normal. Though the trans is easily temporarily "confused into irrational behavior" by multiple driving styles and rapid changes in throttle application whilst cruising in "D" especially.

If its a genuine delay a 2-3 up shift at WOT will likely produce an encounter with the rev limiter. (whilst on dry pavement in 3 or higher since being in 2 locks the trans in 2 alone) This is not really recommended since your trans may very well be compromised in some way and also this up shift would occur at the mid 70's MPH.

If the fluid is fine then have it prodded and test driven by someone who would know the difference.

From a modability standpoint for the "suggestion box" trans itself... it is... to much higher (relative) accelerative result.

CN: Just noticed your the guy with the 2.2 leggy turbo so some of that may or may not be WRX specific. (they dont sticky slushbox info round these parts...)
