Post Ugh.... Car and Truck of the year...

This just isn't right:

This just isn't right.... IMHO:

Independent Journalists Name the North American Car And North American Truck of the Year

DETROIT, -- The Chrysler PT Cruiser and Acura MD-X were named the 2001 North American Car and Truck of the Year, respectively, in an awards ceremony at the start of the North American International Auto Show here today.

Now in their ninth year, the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are chosen by a jury of 50 independent auto journalists from the United States and Canada.

The awards are open to new or significantly revised vehicles that will be on the market in North America in 2001, and the jurors look for cars and trucks that raise the level of achievement in their respective categories. Evaluations of the many vehicles eligible for the awards went on throughout 2000, with the jury voting once in September to reduce the field to the most significant contenders and then voting again in mid-December to choose the finalists.

The finalists for the 2001 North American Car of the Year award were the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the Honda Insight, and the Toyota Prius. The finalists for the 2001 North American Truck of the Year award were the Acura MD-X, the Ford Escape, and the Toyota Sequoia.

The president of the awards' organizing committee, Alex Law, made the point that "They are the most prestigious automotive prizes in North America for many reasons, not the least of which is because they are picked by a group of independent auto writers from a vast array of media across the continent." Law added that the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are also a secret from everyone but the man who counts the ballots -- Richard Gabrys, the vice-chairman of Deloitte & Touche -- until the envelopes are open.

Well, you've got to admit the PT Cruiser is the coolest looking minivan around.

Isn't it nice to see that looks and marketing are still what REALLY count when talking about the Car of the Year? Glad they don't look at other things, like performance. Guess out little Subies just aren't up to snuff, huh?

So the hybrids didn't win. I wonder who had the last saying in that. A hybrid can't win, it'll be too advanced, environmentally sensitive and make too much sense. At least for the Truck drivin', fried crap eating, Miller Light lovin' average Joe.
So what did you expect?

the PT cruiser sucks..but whats wrong with the MDX? Its emissions friendly (isnt it ULEV?) performs well, has good handling and decent mild-offroad qualities...
theyre talkign about the "truck" of the year so no cars are considered...and for an SUV, its a very good one..

the PT is exactly my favorite car(?) either.

A friend wanted to buy one so i tested it with him. Just as hstokes said, It's not bad for a minivan, but still it's a compact minivan. I'll give Chrysler this much, It is very versitle, but I bought my car to drive it, not to have cookouts with. Just a thought........

Just HOW exactly is the MDX a truck? It's a raised AWD station wagon... Anybody remember those wagons from American Motors? Sure, the MDX is really nice, but it's as much a truck as the RX300 is, and we all know THAT'S just a Camry!

Cool

Ha ha ha. The Independent Journalists' North American Car and Truck of the Year. Seems like high praise.

I never heard of the Independent Journalists' North American Car and Truck of the Year until just now. Must be prestigeous.

High praise indeed. Ha ha.

Lighten up guys. It doesn't mean anything.

horatio102,

MDX is a raised AWD Mini Van. It is based on the mini van platform and built in the same assembly line.

Who cares it is just MARKETING. And marketing is for unintelligent people that can't make up their own minds.

I don't like MDX's 100/0 torque split. Other than that, it's a fine car. Somehow I suspect tha Honda copied Subaru's Active AWD system. Should Subaru come out a car like MDX, I'll jump in in no time. I need a car that sits more than 5 ppl. And no way I gonna drive a Mini Van.

Another rather interesting thing is that the PT Cruiser is considered as a truck for CAFE, but wins the car of the year award.
Wonder if it will be considered as a car now and DCX will be screwed with their CAFE requirements...

Same results as Motor Trend...

For $16k, can you find a more versatile car than the PT Cruiser? Not to mention it feels $5-10k more expensive than it is... And the reaction it still gets is just great! (We have a 66 mustang, and get the same type of reaction, so we dont need it )
Its definatly not a performer though... But thats its only fault.

Meanwhile, the MDX is an excellent SUV (Trucks, SUV's, not much difference people...) with a heck of alot for the price. It drives very well, even off road, and that extra row of seats makes it the best SUV out there with 3 rows of seats (too bad the X5 doesnt have 3 rows...)

Actually, with these two cars winning... I give the WRX/New Impreza line very good odds of winning a heck of alot of awards here in America over the next year. I mean, not only does it perform, but it performs like cars thousands and thousands of dollars more expensive, and with the Wagon model, its actually practical.

Anyone care to place a bet now?

Sorry, but the POS Cruiser makes me want to vomit. It's a super ugly minivan. Whoop-te-doo. I don't know much about the Acura MDX, but I'd say it doesn't even hold a candle to the likes of the Toyota Tundra and the Nissan Xterra in power, versatility, and value.

Ah well, we all know what's going to be next year's car of the year!

The PT Cruiser is just an undersized minivan with no redeeming qualities besides its Prowler style nose.

The Acura MDX is the ultimate poseur SUV. If they were going to make it look like truck, they should have built it on a truck chassis.
