Changed the air filter today (stock intake with black box, rectangular filter, ect). It was really dirty (should have changed it a while ago) and I noticed 2 or 3 oil burn spots on the filter. About the size of a bottle cap. Again I was told I needed a new one about 9,000 miles ago.
[b]Do you think those oil spots could have been caused by my recent valve cover gasket/tube seal leak and misfire?[b]

Also, I don't have the filter anymore and forgot to take a picture of it.
I tried to get a picture off google to show what it looked like but there's nothing. So just imagine a dirty filter with some "bottle cap" sized oil spots. Last edited by ManualOverAuto; 03-31-2012 at 09:23 PM. |

Cover gasket leaking won't spit oil into the intake.

Damn, you got my hopes up for nothing. So hopefully it is just from the filter being super old, and not a hg problem. I should know about a hg issue when I send out my oil to Blackstone here shortly. |

No, they won't.
Search the web for "oil in intake manifold" Oil comes form crank case or valve cover and these connections are for emission control. Overfilled oil, normal oil splashing up the lines cause oil getting spit into intake. Check to see that oil isn't overfilled. I read here that oil level is hard to read on some Subarus due to difficulty getting a stable reading on the dipstick. Check that PCV hose and valve are in good order. Replace air filter and observe. |

Anyway it's not from an overfill. When the old air filter was in, the oil level was fine. Checking the pcv valve in the next few days. Whenever I get the chance really, cause it seems pretty easy from what I've seen/read. Last edited by ManualOverAuto; 04-02-2012 at 12:30 AM. |

Replaced the pcv valve today. Super easy, and $7. The old one was pretty gunked up, although it still rattled just a little. Put in a fresh one anyway, so during the next oil change I'll check the air filter and see how it looks.
While trying to screw it in I did drop it down into the engine, ha. That was the hardest part of the whole thing, trying to squeeze my hand down there to retrieve it. So thanks for the tip. Last edited by ManualOverAuto; 04-02-2012 at 10:58 PM. |

As camshaft and valves dance around, oil splashes around inside the case. Some mist gets carried into the vent hose connected to intake. Make sense? |

So when the pcv valve gets sticky or clogged that mist is forced somewhere else causing potential problems? Also, my valve cover gasket didn't leak to the outside. It was all inside, but there was also leaky plug seals. Last edited by ManualOverAuto; 04-02-2012 at 11:21 PM. |
