Default Moving to Anchorage

Hey everybody! I'll be moving up to Anchorage March 1st so I figured I should introduce myself. My name is Jesse, I'm in the Air Force as a crew chief on the C-5 but I'll be doing en-route when I get there. I have a wife and a 3 year old daughter, both are into cars (my daughter loves to help me work on them haha). I used to have an 89 240sx Blacktop SR20DET which was my main car, and the wife has the 08 STI. Sold the 240sx for extra money for moving expenses and to pay off some student loans, so now we're down to just one car. More than likely going to pay off the STI and pick up an 04 or 05 STI for myself so the wife can have hers back. Anyway on to the current car:
08 STI Obsidian Black Pearl hatch,
stock motor
COBB catback
Intake silencer delete
OEM roof rack
OEM heavy duty cargo basket
255/40/18 Hankook Ventus V-12 tires
Hella Supertones
Subaru all weather floor mats
OEM window visors
OEM fog lights

That's all i can think of right now....It's a fun car and my first Subaru. Looking forward to meeting new people and attending some meets. Here's a picture of the car as it sits now.

Welcome. Great community up here. Fantastic autocross scene, lots of competition.

I recommend you buy your STI in the lower 48 cause they are hard to come by up here and when they do come up, they are expensive.

Safe travels.

Thanks to both of y'all! I'll definitely be keeping that in mind when I get ready to purchase. I'm looking forward to heading up there, I'm originally from West Texas then I got stationed in Dover, DE and now off to Alaska! I'll be taking the ferry from Bellingham and should get there Feb 27th. How is the weather around that time of month?

The weather is still pretty wintery usually. I would say enough to where you might wanna put a winter tire on there before the car gets here so you aren't stuck on flat ground.

ok cool that's exactly what I wanted to know haha. I was going to buy winter tires for when I am here in DE but it hasn't really snowed at all in 2 years.

Nice!! You're coming to work with me. I work the en route here and just saw your name on the inbound board. Let me know if you have any questions, I can probably answer them.

On the other hand, I'm kinda disappointed that I won't be the only 08 sti at the meets any more, hah.

Awesome haha, I'm just trying to figure out the workload y'all have up there and what the days are like. I'm up at McGuire right now doing the C-17 training and it's cake compared to a C-5 lol.

Welcome to the community, but as others have stated get some snow tires on, the hankook w409 I-pikes are a great choice and not terribly expensive same with the General altimax arctics, also something else to consider is check your coolant for freeze point and drain out current washer fluid and pour in the -20 kind just incase that's not what you are currently running now

We're on a panama schedule with 12h days and workload is minimal usually, with a lot of down time which turns into pt, training, school, busy work etc. etc. Sometimes we'll get broke 5s and 17s which makes things a little hectic but it isn't that bad.

Yeah i heard about changing the coolant before i get over there but wasn't' sure about it. I'll probably change it out when i get to Seattle or when i leave DE.

Damn lol my wife hates the 12hr shift thing. I didn't mind it because i was on the same shift when i was working MOC. But it did suck since all we did was sit in a chair and talk on the radio for 12hrs straight. But now I'll at least get to move around.

Quick question...I'm currently on the waiting list for base housing but I've heard some bad stuff about them, I've got a couple of houses lined up if base housing falls through. Some are in Anchorage and 1 in Eagle River. Is it worth the drive to live in Eagle River? Or is it worth it to live in Base Housing? More than likely we just might move into Anchorage so we can be closer to the University for my wife but we're not sure yet.

Thanks for the advice on the tires, I'll definitely be picking some up before I head out!

The drive from base to ER or Anchorage is pretty much equal to each other. ER is just a quieter location with most of the same primary stores as anchorage has. You're not looking at a long drive between both areas, only time you'll see delays is during morning and evening rush hours.

Personally I really like Eagle River, if I decide to commit my career here it would either be there or in South Anchorage for residency.

This. We work on the back side of base too, so even if you lived in anch, it wouldn't save you that much time. As far as base housing goes, it depends... You might get lucky and get into the newer ones or you could get stuck in the older ones which I hear a ton of bad things about. My personal recommendation is find a place in eagle river; Less people, quieter, nicer area and its not that far.

Base housing isn't too bad at all. What's your rank? I'm an E-3 and for my bah level, I have unit that is twice as nice as anything I could afford off post. People live in one bed room apartments with no garage and no yard for as much as my bah is. And it's a quick and easy drive to work. Can't beat a 2 story, 3 bed 2 1/2 bath heated garage and a decent yard for the dog for $1500.

I am also moving to JBER this year, though my move will not be still Sept. Currently have 2011 MS3 thats on the chopping block to be sold and 2013 F150 XLT with Ecoboost. The plan is to pick up an GC 2.5 RS in the lower 48 before we come up.

I also agree with the previous poster about base housing, I rather live next to a meth lab than base housing. I have had do too much paper work on my airman, far too much silly stuff for me to be put in the same situation. This will be my last PSC, so I plan to buy a home anyway.

Its where I am looking to buy once we get there, its been years since I have had that long of a commute, right now its about 9-10 miles. Though its 9-10 miles of pure road rage, dodging herds of cattle, tractors, people stopped in the middle of road for no reason, old men in donkey carts, and few that replaced their donkey with what is best described as lawn mower/tiller cross pulling the cart.

I have lived on base for over a year and half now. I can tell you the only "BS" I have received from Aurora so far is in the summer when I failed to Mow my lawn when my grass was actually pretty long. I should have mowed it so it's my fault. Other than that, they have sent out the maintenance guys on the same day I have called them to fix multiple issues. No one has called the MP's on me when I have held a few parties. Also it's nice too because my wife works at the CDC on the airforce side so it's close to her work too.

-Chano, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic about your comment on $1500 for my unit, but if you aren't it really is a screaming deal. If you have ever seen the Moose Crossing housing units, they are pretty nice. Built in 2006, gas stoves, big living areas nice master bedroom with walk in closet and onsuite bathroom. It's like 1800 sqft or more, and for $1,500 you can't beat it anywhere else except like you stated, Palmer/Wasilla which is too far of a drive. I can go home on lunch, after PT to shower and eat breakfast.

And if you are being sarcastic, I have been to two NCO's house's in Eagle River (their BAH level is a lot higher than mine) and they live across teh street from the Walmart and behind the Walmart, and both of their houses are over $1500 a month for rent and not nearly as nice as what my unit is on post.

But hearing horror stories about living on post is all relative. You have morons themselves that claim they are always being harrassed by Aurora so I wouldn't take a damn thing they say about living on post serious. Then you have people like me who try to do the right thing then get a little notice on your door about needing to mow the lawn. And those people like me can do one of two things; 1.) Bitch and moan to coworkers saying, "How dare they put a notice on my door, I have no time to mow the lawn, I was in the field for a week!" or 2.) Be like me and think, "man that's BS, but at the same time I did have time after work last night to mow it but decided washing my car was more beneficial instead!"

So take it for what its worth, I enjoy living on post, 2 minutes from the px/commissary and 7 minutes to my company. And again, a nice big house with an attached heated garage to work on my car is pretty awesome.

Can't believe I failed to mention just how much more safe it is on post rather than off post. I'm an MP myself and we have verrrry little crime on JBER. There are nights where we literally don't get a single call when on shift. Most of the crime is just larceny at the px/commissary, very little property crime and maybe 1 DV a night. I park my car outside and the wife gets the garage and I feel pretty comfortable that my car is not going to get ****ed with outside.
