Finally got my car back. Not to happy with the RA Gearset.
I'm just sort of bummed out right now. After 3 long weeks of waiting, I finally get my car back with the RA 1-4 gearset and an Exedy clutch. However, getting used to the new gear ratios is going to be impossible. The car no longer has that baddass warp speed hit. I used to love rev-matching from 3rd to 2nd and flooring it and getting sucked into my seat. That is no longer the case. The gears just rev out really quickly, I mean sure theres virtually no turbo-lag, but wheres the fun in that. It's too linear, AKA. Slow.
I wonder if an FPGreen will solve my problem Anyone with RA gears can you please chime in?

i thought the ra gearset would actually make your car faster, than the stock ratios?

I find that it is much easier to stay in boost. I would hardly describe it as slow. I thought it was a huge improvement. Maybe you were just expecting too much? I dunno. I would never go back to stock ratios.

RA gears where geared for 8k rpms. Your 6500rpms make them run out quick.

Well if its holding boost longer because of the gears we should be able to go to 7250rpms, if you have a cobb.

Well the car definitely wants to be revved out higher and it stays in the powerband while shifting almost like I diddnt even shift at all, but I kept the stock 5th gear and 4th to 5th sucks. I guess I just have to get used to it.

The 2.0L WRX motor is a rev happy motor, ins't it. Meaning it "likes" to be reved high, right. I mean there is nothing wrong with taking it past 5,500 rpms. Not every shift, but now and then

I love the way the RA's feel over the stockers. The RA box felt better road racing then the 4 and 6 speed. I just wish I wasn't worried about breaking it, thankfully I haven't.

Changing gear ratios doesnt make the car any faster, RA gears actually made my car a little slower at the track, maybe because my engine was still stock

If it makes you feel better, I had the same sensation going from the 5 speed to the 6 speed. Each gear has a tighter range and the redline comes on quick at the track. 3rd gear on the stock 5 speed was great - until the teeth broke off. And the tranny was 75 pounds lighter.

I got 50 series tires (lower ratio then the stock tire about 350 rmp) with the 6 speed on my 02. So I thought that would be too low and switched to the stock sized tire. Wrong, the car is noticeable slower. Plus the ECU should be reset so the computer can adjust to the new load. Lower ratio, faster acceleration is true to our engine with small displacement and low compression ratio.

It should theoretically be faster with the shorter gears. I think it's all in your head.
Short gears tend to be slower sometimes because you shift too slow, or possibily you lose traction too easily. It also could be that your powerband is falling on it's face in the upper end when you shift up to the next higher gear. If that's the case, then maybe you could look into a new turbo that would give great top-end..like a Green-size or bigger. |

Well I think it was all in my head, because tonight I really got on it and man that thing flew. I was just taking it easy on the car because of the new clutch and I guess I diddn't get on it hard enough to realize the power. I was just used to a more drastic turbo hit because of the longer gearing, however it really does pull a lot harder now.
Although, I definitely think that I could benefit from a bigger turbo with the shorter gearing. It would be able to build boost quicker and hit great up top. I've only driven the car a 100 miles so far, so im going to take it easy for a little while longer and bed in the clutch. Then Ill give it a nice good run, and give my opinions again. |

That sounds more like it. I think you were just expecting something different. With the shorter gearing it didn't make sense that you thought you car was slower. Would like to hear more about what you think of the gears. OEM gears hold up fine to my power goals and driving style but am starting to think the RA's would be better sprinted driving gears.

IMO the IDEAL tranny for MAJORITY of the complaining guys here who LOVE torque, lower revs, and holding gear longer for the 1320 and that BUTT dyno feeling PLUS good 6th gear for HIWAY....

I'm gonna assume you got the RA's from rallispec. What did they charge you for the swap? Thinking about going that route my self unless i can get my hands on the lgt gears by then.
