The face of the seal should be at the bottom of the chamfer. With the crank seal, it means bottoming out in the bore, but not so with the camshaft seals.

Excellent write up meat. Will save me a few bucks from havign to buy the manual. Liek I tell my friends if you can read you can work on your own car. Might ne a few special tools but it'll still be cheaper than taking it to a dealer. I plan on changing my timing blet, tensioner, water pump and seals. Pretty much every thing in there as my car has 113k and Im pretty sure none of that has ever been touched. Bought it with 55k. Got a quote from a dealership for $400 just to do the timing belt. All those parts alone will be around $500. Easy choice. There goes a saturday lol.

I just want to add that on my '05 WRX, the wire clips on the radiator are the push release type. I tried pulling the tabs for like 20 minutes before trying to push.

after reading this, i think i may be ready to tackle this job. my 03 wagon is at 101,000 and it needs done, along with water pump. since i have to order everything from the parts store, should i order the timing belt guides, just in case? i have a weekend to do this project and im hoping it will only take a day. Im still a bit scared to do this job since im new to subarus, but it beats the $400 plus parts for someone else to do it.

I've done my fair share of wrench turning on little stuff. I'm not afraid to do my own struts/springs, change my own oil, etc. Don't ask me about auto electronics, but I've always been afraid of timing belts/chains. Even replaced an engine on my Nissan pickup ump-teen years ago, and timing belts scare me. Having a writeup like this saved me a butt-load of money, and gave me the confidence to change my own timing belt. While I was in, I replaced the tensioner, ALL of the pulleys (except cam) and water pump. My only regret, is that I didn't change the front oil seals on the cam shafts.

A strong bit of caution - splurge, and replace all of your pullers, idlers, and the tensioner. I paid damn good money for a mechanic to do this job at 60k, only to have to do it again at 80k because an idler bearing exploded on me.

Do you mean the little metal tabs on MT cars? No

^^^ there is a Subaru special tool made for it though it's different. I tried to make one and it failed. Those bolts aren't playin'. I had all my weight hanging/bouncing on a 4 foot breaker bar and it didn't budge. Good luck with that one.

i put my 03 wrx in 3rd gear and went to loosen the crank pulley but it keeps turning. how do i stop this from happening, do i have to have the motor make a full rotation before it will stop so i can take the crank bolt out? Thanks

Go back about 5-6 pages in this thread and you'll see how to make your own tool. You can probably buy a factory tool but it'll be $75+. Another way is to use a chain wrench with a scrap of the old accessory belt between the chain the pulley so you don't bugger it up.

Or, at your own risk, you can put a breaker bar on the ground and on the bolt head and have the end of the bar on the ground on the ***RIGHT*** side of the engine while looking straight at the engine. Remove your ignition/fuel injection fuse(s). Then go to start the engine quickly to use the starter to loosen the bolt. Usually one quick pulse will do it.

Default cam pulley question

I have tried 3rd and 5th gear trying to get the cam pulley off, still can not stop it from spinning. Anyone have any ideas on how to stop it. Also im assuming that the bolt is not opposite threaded, if i could get some verification on that, that would be great as well. thank you

a buddy of mine just told me to try that, pretty scared tho, sounds kind of sketchy. im guessing if i had an impact gun it would work as well, instead of doing that whole starter thing?

Default Cant get the Cam Sprockets to Re-Align ???

Great write up & Pic''s Meatball !!!

Tell me what I'm doing wrong;

I have everything Aligned,
all of the Belt marks
sitting where they should be,
matched up with the Crank, Cam Sprockets
and the backing cover marks.

Teeth seem to be numbered correctly;
54.5 51 & the 28's I believe.
Cam sprockets aligned with the double marks next to each other.

All good so far, But... when I rotate the engine clockwise
(facing the front) the Cam Sprocket Never re-align again???

I've rotated the engine about four times too.
The marks all re-align
but the Cam Sprocket double marks Don't???

The only thing I can think of
is that I need to rotate the cam sprockets
the correct direction
to re- locate them first.

Cant find any reference to this problem
And I'm hoping you my have some insight on this problem.
Thanks !!!

JW...

^^^ I remember someone else posting about the same problem. It may have been earlier in this thread. I remember someone saying something about that happening with aftermarket cams, or sprockets, or a hybrid head swap (something to that effect). Maybe that will help you search for it. I found out the best way to search NASIOC is google " site:nasioc.com + your search terms ". This will google NASIOC only. It gives you more flexibility and search results than searching through NASIOC's search function. Yo can look up Google search tips and tricks to learn Google's other advanced search options.

I just did this yesterday. I put the car in 5th and had my buddy stand on the brakes. That bolt is tight, it is a regular lefty loosey bolt, I had to use the cheata bar. As for the cam bolts I used an old timing belt and vice grips to hold the cams from spinning. I think I read about using an old belt as a strap wrench in something from Cosworth. It worked awesome on 3 of the bolts. The LH intake did not co-operate.

Ok so i just pulled my timing belt cover because I think my timing belt skipped. The main cam was at about 9 o clock so I tightened it to the correct 12/1 o clock so that the, timing mark on the cam matched the one on the block. Now how many complete 360 degree rotations do i make with this cam to tell if the timing is off? Thanks in advance

Okay,

I've got a request for all the shade tree mechanics out there who have successfully completed this.

The write up and pictures are great for a basic timing belt change, and over on Clubwrx.net there are photos added which detail the water pump etc.

Seems however that lots of other people are replacing the crankshaft / cam shaft seals and there is plenty of written information on how to go about this, but has anyone happened to take any photos and document that part of the job?

I'd be interested to see the process before I dive in, and I've a sneaking suspicion I've got to replace them and oil is leaking from somewhere.

Any extra photos would be appreciated, maybe exactly how you make that awesome sounding jerry rigged strap wrench?

Thanks in advance.

hi everyone,
i just did my timing belt.(i've done alot of honda timing belt's but it's my first subaru)
so here it goes, i just did the timing belt, line up all the timing marks on the belt to the mark's on the crank, cam's.
after lining everything up,pulled the pin out of the tensioner to set it.
spun the crank around to make sure thing's were fine. but as im spinning it to line it back up. i notice my timing mark's on the belt dont line up n e more. but all the marks on the crank and cam's still line up.( marks lined up as in page 1 post 2)
did i do something wrong?
(note: when i took my timing belt off my driver's side cam rotated)
followed the instruction's on which way to spin it and lined it up.
i dont know why my timing belt mark's are off now but the timing marks on the crank and cam's still line up.
like i said it's my first subaru timing belt.
but i imagine it's almost the same.
n e thoughts?

Lightbulb belt marks not lining up with cam/crank marks

Mine never lined back up either. I rotated the engine many times until sweat began to bead off my brow.....stress sweat!! and then i realized---As long as the marks all lined up to begin with...all the timing marks in their proper places lined up with the belt...the everything should line up mechanically later on after I rotate the engine (only in a clockwise direction). To make a long story short, the marks on the belt will only line up again after a few million turns (maybe-maybe not), but the alignment marks on the cams and crank will line up properly as long as the belt is installed properly--every time the engine is rotated notice the cam and crank marks lining up. There may be a slight discrepancy in the "dual" marks on the cams, but I also noticed that they didn't line up exactly even before the old belt came off!! It seemed like they were 1/2-1/4 a tooth off. Rest assured that as long as the marks on the cams line up in correlation with the crank, and there is no binding when you rotate the engine multiple times; Then you have completed the task.
