Angry need help! why in the hell is my transmission leaking around the right axle stub???

i recently just bought a rebuilt 04 transmission and made it fit with my 05 wrx but when i had put it in after a couple of days later..i found drips of oil on the ground and it wasn't motor oil it was gear oil by the smell of that olive smell..well since am a risk taker i just left it alone thinking it would go away and now it has gotten worse! so i went underneath the car and check it and oil was oozing from my right side of the tranny around my axle stub which is i believe the screw on thingy with the 20-30 star lug design.."i guess the seal?" could this be the problem or should i just take it back to the dealer to have it checked am already running low on gear oil or actually dry and gears are starting to feel a lil notchy kind of hard to get out of in the morning.. anyone help me out?? thanks
kevin

You better stay on top of your transmission lubrication till this gets resolved. Sounds like the seal was possibly damaged during replacement, not hard to do by the inexperienced and experienced alike. Get that sucker back to the dealer, or whoever is responsible for the work and the rebuild.

Been there, done that. Probably just ripped the seal when putting the half shaft in. No biggie.

Ewwww. You should have marked a tooth and then counted the number of turns until you were able to pull it out. You may have to get the gear lash set unless you know how to do it.

Like the other guy said, you really should have marked that position. What you are changing is the gear lash on the front differential ring and pinion. You don't just tighten it until it's tight, otherwise those two things will likely eat eachother. Get ahold of a factory manual and it will tell you how to set the gear lash.

If you only turned out one side then crank it in until it stops (easily) then crank it tight one tooth. This sets the pre-load on the carrier bearings. If you loosened both your going to have to drop the trans to get it set 100% correctly.

Each tooth rotation is equal to .0020". Backlash should be .005-.007

Kinda related to my problem.
I have the case split open right now and installing a new diff. I mount it carefully to the drivers side and lower it until the bearings rest on the race. Then I remove to check if I did anything wrong and noticed a spring thats out of place. I believe it was wrapped around the oil seal lip.

Should I remove the diff side retainers, mate the retainer to the bearings then install the retainer to case?

That's the tension spring for the seal. It's easy to dislodge when lowering the axle stub through the seal and is probably the cause for the original poster's leak. If this is out of place or the seal lip gets folded over then a leak is likely. Just put the spring back in position, lube the seal (very important), and lower the diff into postion carefully making sure the axle stub isn't catching the seal lip as it goes through.
