who made your axles and what hubs are you running? But I was thinking a straight axle swap ,and not IRS. But after looking at it today, not gonna happen
I already have a Nissan 350z rear diff mounted up, just don't want to pay 1800 for custom cv axles from dss

We mocked up my rear end setup this weekend and since the legacy has the bolt on style bearing assembly I will be able to use off the shelf parts. I am using a VLSD R200 diff from a 99 Q45. Bearing assemblies from a Nissan 300ZX Non-Turbo which bolts up to my spindle and J30 Hubs and axles.

What type of bearing is in the rear of the WRX?

The Ford 8.8s are easy to find. I paid $100.00 from the junk yard. Gears sets are also reasonable and there are several ratios to choose from. My axles are DSS. The inners are what DSS built for Vaughn Gittin Jr's drift Mustang and the outers are what DSS built for Ken Blocks last Subaru before he made the move to Ford. My hubs are STI

We talked to DSS for the Miata project and they wanted 1200. We then contacted Moser and they built us shafts for $350 and we bought new CVs separately for a grand total of around $550

Thats sounds about what I paid. I bought the rear axels hubs and ARP studs. Front axels ARP studs and custom driveshaft in a package deal. They axels are rated for 1200hp.

Yea i just don't see where they get 1800 just for rear axles and hubs. No drive shaft, and no front axles.

With all the fab you are capable of, you can't create your own axles and mod the oem hubs??

Have you not looked at oem wrx knuckle... they are tiny. The cv hubs are small as well and would never hold up to any power.

I have to get my hands on a sti knuckle (bolt in style wheel bearing), its a larger hub and more material there to work with.

Even if I mod it then I will have to figure out a way to mount new ebrakes, then the lug pattern will be different (saying I used the 350z hub)
Only reason I'm trying this, is b/c the shorter 350z rear cv axle is the perfect length, If I could mount the 350z hub / bearing in my knuckle. Axles would be cheap and easy to replace if ever broken.

Probably my best route is to just buy the DSS axles and hubs rated for 1200hp and call it a day, bolt on and go. Everything works.

No i havent looked at the wrx knuckle.

Sti knuckle might work.

Well no doubt the dss route is the fastest and easiest but you said you didn't want to pay 1800..

What about S14 hubs/knuckles? They are dirt cheap, easier to find than 350z counter parts

And with a little work they bolt right up.

Japspeed uses s14 hubs all around and s13/14 arms/LCAs, Gtr r200.

I'm sure they use oem nissan s13/14 passenger axles. Possibly the 350z axles too.

I have a s14 rear subframe complete at my shop... haven't had time to pull it apart and check, but its 4 lug. Only reason i was thinking about using the 350z is the lug pattern would be the same as an Sti 5x 114.3, then i could just upgrade the front to sti brakes as well. But I just gotta get some time and round up some parts and see what I can do.

But honestly I have never messed with to many cv axles... like swapping and modding them. So this is all new to me in this area. Its nice have spare parts laying around to compare to, but my local auto parts store has nothing...Nothing for subarus... nothing for the 350z .so no comparing before buying.

Dang that sucks no stores carry Subaru/350z parts.

s14 se's came 5 lug 5x114.3 and are way cheaper than 350z hubs.

I was in the exact same situation. Luckily I am on good terms with some of the local junkyards so they let me roam around and measure differenet setups. The 350z Bearing bolt spacing is bigger than the subaru type. Only the older 300zx and q45 bolt spacing on the bearing modules matches

the legacy has a different rear spindle compared to the wrx... I know the sti has a bolt in bearing. Still not sure if the 300zx and q45 bolt spacing matches the sti, and also not sure if the 350z out hub splines match the 300zx hub

The 350z wheel bearing and the 300zx Wheel bearing have the same ID so you can use a 300zx wheel bearing with a 350z hub if you wish to use the 350z axles.

Other axles that use the same 6-bolt pattern as your 350z diff are the Q45 90-96 and the 300zx tt. You could use 300zx tt hubs, bearing, and axles if you can find them and they will bolt up to that diff.

This is all considering that the bolt pattern of the STI rear spindle matches the bolt pattern of the Legacy rear spindle

yea i saw where the bearings interchanged earlier today... but then when i went to buy the sti knuckles... realized they don't interchange on the wrx... so I'm back to the drawing board again.

I have all the 350z stuff already, Just my knuckles are the hold up... Physically not enough material there to machine it out to run the 350z hubs or 300zx tt hubs...

May have to just machine my own knuckles, and just redrill the hubs to keep the 5x100 bolt pattern.

I called the drive shaft shop today, now the axles and hubs are 2000 ...

I hate getting stuck in situations like this... just makes me loose motivation on my project.

Very understandable, but on a project that is knocking the door of "epic" down....you can't let axles stop you.

Epic is an understatement! This build has the best attentions to detail, and fabrication in a swap I've seen so far.

We root for you to finish!

What are the differences from the sti to wrx knuckles? How do the r180 guys use the STI hubs?

r180 is sti. r160 guys that have 5x114.3 rears use custom dss axles. The rear 5x114.3 bearings press in, the front bolt on. 5x100 front hubs/bearings press in. Sounds like some confusion in here.
