got the short block finished. had a rough time getting the wrist pins to line up. my snap ring pliers were to wide for cylinder 3. got a cheap on from harbor freight and worked great. I forgot to put the snap ring on cylinder 1 piston before installing. I put a scratch about an inch long on the lower part of the cylinder trying to remove that piston.

starting on the heads next.
found one passenger side exhaust valve bent. wasn't planning on getting valves but ill just get oem replacement.

still got to order more parts this week like the oil cooler, and other moldings

well; bad news keeps coming up. spent the day cleaning the passenger side head found a few cracks near the spark plug area. removed the plugs and can see the crack go down a few threads. there are 2 cracks on the other side.

good note; got new std valves. good thing I didn't start lapping them.

not much has happened. I missed more trackdays and autox and hardly drive my car.

been collecting moldings and finally got the driver door molding in. it came bent! so I got a replacement and about 2 weeks later the replacement shows up and the tip is damaged! finally had time today and call the store. hopefully this time its ok. I go all the other ones already. and now that I have them I really don't want to install. kind of feel like im becoming a hoarder.

20190210_135454 by meme meme, on Flickr

I got a third set of heads and started lapping the valves. got them cleaned and checked for straightness. installed BC valve springs(the basic one) and have BC stage2 cams waiting. also got plm headers and uppipe.

I got a evergreeen gasket kit that came with pistons. has mls headgaskets, seems pretty good.

another motor I got for the heads
20190319_194248 by meme meme, on Flickr

im giving up on getting my car barred. once this motor is finished, ill swap it out and see if it runs. ill install the header/uppipe, td05/16g, new oem flywheel and excedy clutch. I got 900cc( I think) and walbaro pump.

next will be the 15 steering rack. ill probably swap out the colum at the sametime so I can use the sti steering knuckle. I already have 04 sti front control arms so I hope I don't have to shorten anything. flatiron is having a sale so its the same price as from oem online subie parts sellers.

Are you talking just the rack itself, or does Flatirons have a conversion kit of some sort?

It's just for the rack. Been reading up on it and some people had shorten the tie rod. But since I have sti control sa rma already, I shouldn't have to modify anything.

Once I get the rack I'll see if I can bend the power steering lines. Hope it works, so i can save some money. I want to do a couple autox before i start this swap.

I installed the heads and cams yesterday. I put sealant and new head bolts and valve cover bolts. about to install spark plugs, then I realized I didn't do the valve lash!
sucks I already used sealant, so had to take it all apart again.

tried to install the up pipe and turbo but turbo inlet doesn't fit. the bottom 3 bolt flange in the pictures is pretty tight. if I tghten the 3 bolt flange first the mount at the cylinder head will have to much stress.
plm says to make the holes bigger and that's it.

i wont buy from them anymore! almost got a few other things from them

on a brighter note. i ordered the '15 steering rack and some bolts to mount the back timing cover so i can install the cam gears and timing kit.

oh; and my math sucks i ordered 14 buckets and got 7 wrong. but now everything is in spec.

went to aristocrat autosport to pick up an HKS equal length header and agency power up pipe. seemed like it was about 3:30 hours of traffic! sucks to go anywhere in LA.

wasted money on the plm header and ebay up pipe! ebay up pipe was about an inch to short!

agency power up pipe only had one problem the last bolt to mount the turbo is a bit off. so I drilled the turbine hole a bit bigger.

for the longest time ive been search for this part that connects to the lower grill of rs bumper. I only had the left side and couldn't find a par number. I thought it was a jdm item since it came with my jdm front. well, 3 different sets of splash guards later I found them. come to find out it didn't connect with the brake ducts that came on the first set of splash guards. I thought they were connected. so that was a waste of money and hours of searching.

got the timing belt set on. but I didn't know about the belt guides at the corners of the timing covers. so waiting for those to come in and I think the front is finished.

been awhile;

I went to an autocross at fontana with speed ventures last month. figured its gretting hot so I removed the motor and put the fresh rebuild in. old motor is still running great. so ill save that for a rainy day.

had installed ebay 16g turbo. but the coolnt fittings don't fit. it has "TBO" casted into the compressor housing. this thing leaks so much oil!!

so I ordered another ebay turbo from rev9. coolant fittings don't fit on this one. lower coolant fitting sits right on the block so you cant mount the turbo.

drain fitting is a bit off and the coolant plug fittings were hand tight.

got it installed today. seems to be ok. no leaks yet.

I have 950cc injectors and still trying to learn cobb turner race program. really don't know what im doing. but I adjusted the injector scale for the 950cc. starts and idles ok. drove for about 2 or 3 miles and seems ok.

Inspiring! Keep it up man! I made a 110 page powerpoint for my journal I'll have to upload it. 95% of the work was done by Drive Auto Sports. Didnt have the time or space to get mine done so I outsourced. Absolutely no complaints on the build.

Your last picture is shocking, our cars are basically identical, mines white where yours is red, and we both have iq3s installed.

Thanks! I'm to broke so I'm forced to do it myself.
I did just pay for an etune from ambot tuning. Hope that works out. I have the atr program but no time to try and learn/understand it. I have the Cobb its map for vf39 and sti pinks. I adjusted the injector sale to 950cc. Runs pretty good but seems a bit lean.
I want to get out to streets of willow track in a few weeks.

Did you ever get your speedo to work? I'm still playing with mine. It goes through the entire range and doesn't stay. Jump from 20 to 100 and all over the place.

17th is big willow(opps) but dont think I will make it. Problems with etune since I have some random 950cc injectors. Since he hasn't sent me any tune, I'll try and get a refund and play with it myself(but I really dont know what I'm doing on it)
But I'll mark my calendar for the 21! Who is hosting it?

Yeah, I started with a v3 cluster and mechanical speedo. After 2 spun sensors and a failed cluster, that's when we converted to electronic and the iq3s. Before the iq3s, the mapdccd would show speed from 30 to 150 mph for no reason, super jumpy. I suspected a failing VSS.

I was able to set the display interval for SPEED to 7 from 1, and that definitely helped soothe the jumpyness of the speedo.

how'd I miss all these updates..? You're a beast man. loving all the hands on, and constantly tearing into things. What I admire most is the path, even though it's ebay stuff you're giving us the pros and cons. I accept forward thinking. Best of luck and keep up the great work.

Ah, go to the main dash display (4 displays), click on MPH then change it from a 1 to a 7. I did it on all 4 once I sorted it out.

thanks for the feed back. as much as I wish I can afford brand name parts i really cant. but I can put in time to install parts. ive probably installed/removed the turbo on this car a few times and fitted about 3 different downpipes and exhaust. (because of ebay parts). main thing is to try and get to the track as cheap as possible. this is not my daily so I don't mind blowing the motor. thanks for stopping by

ill check it out tomorrow. being cheap I have to share my laptop with my kids. thanks for the tip.

small update. I somehow talked myself into getting 2 more ecu. I wanted the try the megasquirt because I hope to get a v8 swap 300zx z32 running ms3 as a project for next year. so get some play time with tuner studios before.

but Haltech has more help a phone call away. so I also got platinum pro pnp

funny part, I got the haltech ecu but not the CAN harness(for iq3s). I got the racepak CAN harness for the mspnp pro but not the ecu.

called a few places for dyno tuning.
antspec wont dyno it. they don't dyno swapped cars and only tune with certain brand injectors.
phatbotti wont tune it because if no cats, you need external wastegate
church tuning , I cant get a hold of.
nightmotorsport is $900.

so I might go to night motor sports. but so hard to part with that $900!

also im trying to get an integra since my friend has a full gsr swap he will give me(blown, but good trans). but its so hard to find non-sunroof chassis. but I might be taking the honda to street of willow, if I haven't tuned the gc.

thanks. ill do my best as funds allow.

my megasquirt order was canceled. so ive been playing with the haltech for a few days.

I figured it would be a long while before I would get to the track at this rate. I contacted torqued performance for an etune. hope to get it running good so I can get out to streets of willow.

after the first logs torqued says something is wrong with my maf. so I order a denso maf and front and rear o2 sensors.

started taking apart the old maf and this is what it looks like. wood screws, no oring, Teflon paste everywhere, and screws post is broken and drill all the way through into the inside of the maf housing.

well; i ordered the denso maf and o2 sensors. waited for the rear for so long. when i got it, it looks like a fake. came in a zip lock bag and no goldish anti seize. box didn't have any part numbers or labels. not like any other denso parts ive bought before.
20190905_174652 by meme meme, on Flickr

i ordered a oem maf housing from ebay. when it came, it was in worst condition then the one i had. so i jb welded the old one and drilled new holes.

few weeks ago i picked up an integra Rs it is really rough! but no sun roof.

i first contacted ambot tuning. was getting really good reviews. but didn't seem to confident tuning with my current injectors. wanted me to get 1050x. been waiting for a refund for exactly a month. im sure he is busy but i also want my refund. had to call my credit card company.

been using torqued and happy with it. both ambot and torqued have great response times within their work hours. so if i can get the car running good enough ill take the subie to the track on the 21. i don't think i have enough time to get the integra ready by that time.

i got a few parts in for the integra and pulling the gsr motor out of my friends car. energy suspension master kit, ES trailing arm bushing, manual swap parts, timing belt, water pump, oil pump, and gasket kit.
