2008 WRX I've lost audio from all speakers but the tweeters
Previous owner installed or had installed a single dinn Kenwood radio to factory speakers. An Axxess ASWC was also installed to retain steering wheel controls. It's my belief the speaker are the factory premium audio option speaker in each door and tweeters on front doors.
Now for the problem over course of a couple days all the speakers would cut in and out for no reason that I could pinpoint until they all just stopped working except the small tweeters in front doors. I figured Kenwood HU finally crapped out since it was also having display problems. I replaced HU with a known good one but this didnt fix problem still only audio from tweeters. I assumed it had to be a factory amp since all speakers were cutting in and out at same time. Found fuse under hood labeled audio amp but it was good. Started googling and found out that my car doesn't have an audio amplifier even though there is a fuse labeled for it. It started to rain so i havnt had chance to pull the door panels to check each speaker and door loom wiring. Is there for sure no factory amplifier or other factory device speaker wires go to from HU before going out to speakers. Just finding it very odd all speakers would cut in and out at same time and now all of them completely quit without there being some kind of amp or device in-between.

Without pulling panels and swapping speakers (swap-tronics), this could be a simple lose wire to a much more involved issue.
I cannot answer the amplifier question. Can you change the fade/balance, to one speaker and get anything out of that speaker? The tweeters work, so signal is getting there, but that doesn't mean the previous owner didn't do something weird with the connectors behind the dash or in the doors themselves. The Axxess ASWC should only affect the operation of the HU, and should have not influence on the signal going to the speakers. There is probably one or two body harnesses with the 8+ wires (2/speaker) on the back of the HU. What is the condition of those harnesses? Are any of the wires kinked or in bad condition that might cause a short? I doubt that all 4 door speakers would fail at the same time, but if they were getting dirty power, or they are just old with too much power I guess they could fail...but all at the same time? You won't be able to get a good look until you can get at least one door panel off. Maybe the previous owner ran his own speaker wire, but failed to insulate the terminals and they are hitting metal or have gotten wet, or are just wiggling loose. Good luck. |
