Ah, ST Eye, sorry, I posted my response before seeing yours. Well, maybe someone can check the Impreza TSM and find the equivalent.

For those that have the Impreza TSM, I found the instructions in the Outback TSM in the "Body Section" --> "Instrumentation and Driver Info" --> "Combination Meter System". Within that section, there is a "Dealer Customize Mode" sub-section that I posted above.

Hopefully, something comparable has been published for the Impreza. Who's got a TSM and can look this up??

Over the 8000 miles I so far have accrued in my 2012 Impreza Limited, I've noticed that the computer routinely over-estimates the fuel economy, by about (for me) 5.9%. Does anyone know if it is possible for a service technician to adjust/tweak the settings in the onboard computer to bring the MPG down to a more realistic level? Can anyone point to a Subaru service document describing this procedure?

And while I'm on it.....has anyone experimented with tire pressure variations to provide better fuel economy? I realize that Subaru has directed 32 psi for the front and 30 psi for the rear. My dealership seems to have set each about 5 psi higher. Not sure if this has anything to do with being at a high altitude (Denver, mile high!). In my old 2000 Forester, I recall a lot of discussion on tweaks to tire pressure for better economy.
Maybe but this reminds of a fun story. The other day a guy came into a subaru dealership that someone in my family works at and demanded that he be compensated for each gallon of gas the readings were off by. Obviously they didn't do that.

As for the rude comment. Well, you will live. To get the most accurate readings a full fill up is needed. Not necessary but you cant check real numbers vs computer if you put 15 dollars worth. (which is roughly 4 gallons)
It is more to do with static electricity on the nozzle or the vehicle.

To those of you who replaced your 5MT transmission fluid and rear diff fluid with Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90:

I'm about to do this job myself (my Amsoil order just came in). The service manual says to use Three Bond 1105 on the rear diff drain and fill plugs, and to install a new gasket on the tranny drain plug.

Did you guys do this? The closest Subie dealership to me doesn't even stock the Three Bond product in their parts department.

3. DEALER CUSTOMIZE MODE
The combination meter can be customized with dealer customize according to the following procedure.
CAUTION: Perform the steps described in 1) through 4) within 10 seconds.
1) Within 3 seconds after turning the ignition switch to ON, set the lighting switch to tail light or headlight position.
2) Press the trip meter knob five times.
3) Turn the lighting switch to OFF, and press the trip meter knob five times.
4) Set the lighting switch to tail light or headlight position again, and press the trip meter knob five times.
5) Move on to the "DEALER CUSTOMIZE MODE".
  • When the dealer customize mode operates, the LCD displays each adjustment screen.
  • The dealer customize mode consists of three setting screens. {Avg.F/E Correction Screen}, {Ambient Temp. Correction Screen} and {Clock Adjust. Screen} is displayed cyclically in this order every time the trip meter knob is tapped.
  • Holding down the trip meter knob while each setting screen is displayed can change the setting value.
NOTE: When ignition switch is turned OFF or the vehicle is driven, the customize mode is cancelled automatically.

No...Customize mode........................Initial value......Correction range
1....Avg.F/E Correction Screen...........+/-0%............ +/-10%
2....Ambient Temp. Correction Screen..+/-0°C (°F)..... +/-3°C (°F)
3....Clock Adjust. Screen.................. on................. on or off
This DOES NOT work for the 2012 Impreza. Have the dealer refer to the "PC application help for Subaru Select Monitor" for instructions on how they can adjust this, external air temperature, and second (passenger) seat belt warning.

Will the dealer charge for this adjustment?

Should be covered under warranty, IMHO. My dealer attempted the "original" solution that did not work at no cost to me (3k miles). I'll have them look at it again, when I have the time - I do the Oil Change and Tire Rotations on Saturday and all they have for staff on Saturdays are limited to those that can support those activities. Anything more exotic requires a week-day appointment when the "Pros from Dover" are available.

i need 4 door and prefer a hatch (but not necessary) so the velocter is out (i still can't buy a korean car anyways despite their improvements). i don't like the focus interior and wasn't impressed with their driving dynamics (i rented one last summer). the mazda 3 is ugly to me but everyone raves on how they drive + has more power and lighter than impreza. the impreza looks much better and classier and has awd but is slower and probably not as fun to toss around as the 3. problem is i won't be able to find an impreza that i like (would have to be manual hatch). i may just wait for the civic si refresh.

Those instructions sound similar to what the service manual states, but the service manual states this applies only in certain models, can't remember the term for it, but basically it works on Canadian models or similar with the more advanced dash LCD screen. But for our models there should be a way for the dealer to do it with the computer hooked up to the car. They did it for me & it can be adjusted in 5% increments.

Yes. I did the math over the lifetime of the car & it consistently ran 6-7% on the high side. With the -5% change I'm usually only about 0.2-0.4 MPG off from the gauge now.

Okay those with the Ivory interior... how is it holding up? Stains or just dirty yet? Any advice on if there's a product to keep it clean?

Edit: Looking at a 2012 Impreza for the wife.

Default Keeping Ivory interior clean

No problems here with the ivory interior - spend a few bucks ($5 or $6) on Scotchguard for fabrics and any mess quickly cleans up. I've had my Impreza since January and sprayed the entire interior - seats, door panels, etc. on the first day I got it home , and no problems. I would advise doing it late in the day, when your not going to use the car till the next morning. Leave all windows open and try not to breath the fumes. Let it dry overnight and you'll be fine

Edit: Looking at a 2012 Impreza for the wife.
I have a nearly 3-year old Outback with the similar ivory interior, with leather. It is holding up very well -- leather is actually easier to keep clean than fabric.

One great tip: for all of the HARD plastic surfaces like door jams, center console, etc., a damp "Mr. Clean Magic Sponge" makes all of the plastics effortlessly look like new, even textured plastics.

i can't say mine with that much precision (haven't used highway markers, but instead been using google maps), but i'm definitely a bit over 3% based on my samples of longer drives.

presumably one could using a hiking/running GPS which can track distance travelled. i've been too lazy to do this (i actually have a hiking GPS) but i should try it at some point.

but i'm convinced enough based on google maps and prior cars on known routes that my car is roughly 3+% off. my mileage computer is off 5% the other direction so in the end, i just sort of believe my mileage computer maybe mentally dropping it 0.3mpg and call it a day.

the good news, i guess about the underpredicted odometer is the fact that the car will be lower mileage years from now!
