EJ22 Turbo Installed. BIG Problems. I need Help!!
Ok guys. Started up the new motor yesterday. IM having what seems to be some MAJOR problems. My spark plugs are all different colors on the tips. The passenger side spark plugs BOTH have White tips and the Driver's side plugs both have BLACK tips. Obviously my drivers side is WAY too rich and my Passenger side is WAY too lean. Im pretty positive that my timing belt is fine. I am not running any engine manegment. just a JC sports Torque Chip 2. I am also running a Parrellel Fuel delivery Setup. The motor setup i am running is a Phase 1 EJ22 Turbo Block with my SOHC EJ25 heads. I am not the only one to have done this type of swap, but i have not heard of any problems like this though. Could the lower 8:1 compression be what is casuing my car to be so out of whack? Does anyone know the part number for the timing belt that i should be using from a 2000 2.5 RS? Also which mark on the crank sproket shoud i be lining up with? how many teeth should there be between the crank sprocket and Cam sprockets? If ANYONE KNOWS i would apprecite help! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! My car SOUNDS like it is misfiring. and the TIMING SOUNDS off.

Since you've already identified that the plugs look completely different side-to-side, I'd start looking at your fuel delivery setup. maybe you have some type of restriction on the passenger side, or maybe it's just not getting enough feed. What type of fuel pump are you using? Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

It sounds like you may have different fuel pressure for the fuel rails. You say you did the parrallel fuel rail mod. Are you SURE the fuel pressure regulator is in the correct spot?

I have Driven the car. I am SURE that the FPR is in the right spot. It comes AFTER all the fuel delivery, after the exit T. I Dont see ANY restrictions. Yes i have TWO fuel pressure gauges. One Blitz one that reads Directly AFTER the Fuel Filter, and one that is INSIDE my SARD Fuel PRessure Regulator. The Blitz one continues to show pressure EvEN after my car has been shut off. THe one on the SARD Drops down to ZERO right away when the car is shut off!

The Haynes "Subaru Legacy Repair Manual 1990 thru 1998" has diagrams for the 2.2L SOHC (as well as the 2.5L DOHC) engine on pages 2A-7 and 2A-10. It's similar for the 2.5L SOHC engine. Good luck, -WaC Wayne |

Are you sure the firing order is correct? Did you check output of the coils?

No I was sure of the timing marks. I looked in the Haynes manual too! I just want to get other opinions and CROSS REFERENCE. How can i check the firing order Adam? Please IM or email me with any ideas of what this could be.

Does Changing my compression make my car run pooly?
I swapped my Ej25 out for a Factory Legacy Turbo block with 8:1 compression. I have a stock ECU. Does lowering my compression make my car run like it does? Half of my motor is lean and half is TOOOO rich. What could be causing this? It Also makes a loud clicking sound from inside the motor.

did you really need to open a second thread?
your haynes manual has the firing order, and you could even search and find it here on the iClub. I'm guessing your car is running poorly because you've screwed something elementary up. Cam timing, firing order, fuel pressure, etc. |

Sorry ColinL: My fuel pressure gauges are BOTH reading the right pressure. How could my firing order be messed up? What could cause this? How do i mess with my cam timing? We checked the timing today. It was spot on. All the timing belt marks line up with the marks on the sprokets.

How could i have messed up my firing order? Could the lower compression or changed displacement have AnYTHING to do with this problem? Or does the ECU not know the difference?

first of all the STOCK ECu is NOT going to like 8:1 compression...it will eventually throw a misfire code....third what have you done/didn't do??

now here's a dumb quesiton...is the crank reluctor on the Legacy 2.2 the SAME as the EJ25 SOHC??? it should be a 6 tooth wheel with 2 offset teeth...secondly on the EJ seriers motors the keyway on the crank should not face up...there should be a line(IIRC) not the aarow that points to a line on the oil pump housing...at this time the keyway should point straight downward. Next there are lines on each cam spockets(not the aarows) that line up with a mark on the head...each one points straight up...one of the cams should have slight spring tension on it at this point..
If that's not the problem then i would say you have 2 injectors that are stuck open look for a crossed wire providing a constant ground for those 2 injectors...the passenger side would lean out because the ECU is trying to compensate for the overly rich condition....that or you have a vacuum leak. jeremy |

heres a dumber question...
if its only on one side of the engine... maybe you left something in the intake manifold on the other side like some towels in both the driver side so all the air is going on the passenger and the driver is getting no air...... take em manifolds off give it a try... btw i'm stupid... just look... wouldn't hurt cause this makes no sense... |

You never mentioned if you are down on power or if's just unusual engine noises? Is it misfiring across the RPM range? Any tapping sounds?
Not that it will help, but what pressures does your Blitz gauge read when the engine is off? |

Imprezinator's car did not show the same problems with the 2.2 block, 2.5 heads and stock 2000 ECU.
When you blew your 2.5 did you have the heads checked out? Some of the valves may be damaged and you are getting incorrect amounts of air in some of the combustion chambers... You may have to bite the bullet and take it somewhere to check it out. Your motor shouldn't see such huge differences from left to right. Let keep one thread open for your problem, so the discussion won't have to repeat itself. |

AaronB- Sorry about the double post. i have tried to get in touch with Imprezinator. No response! Is there any way someone could have him IM, email or PM me? adamsrs |

*Sigh*.. allrighty.. here we go.
1) You verified timing right? Sounds to me like one of your camshafts is 180 off... but... if you say the timing is right.. we'll take your word for it. 2) Is your firing order correct? The number one plug goes to the number one terminal on the coil? Check this to the manual and let us know. 3) Don't worry about different crank sensors. As long as you're using ALL of your EJ25 components save for the shortblock you can eliminate that possibility. 4) Double check your fuel delivery. No really.. even if you've done it three times, you've changed a lot of variables in the past week or two. Take another look. 5) The stock ECU won't care about compression ratio.. at least not right now it won't. Compression ratio has nothing to do with this issue. Eliminate that possibility. 6) How's about a compression check? 7) What's your timing look like under startup? It should be at zero. What does your timing look like under idle? Verify your timing using a timing light if at all possible. All of these things will lead you down a specific path. A motor doesn't need all that much to run. It needs fuel, air, spark, and compression. Verify these things and you only have to worry about when they're happening, not which one isn't happening. Fitz |

Ok, Mark, I have PMed you like a million times. You are never online. lol! ANyhow, thanks for all the ideas, only one question, how would it be possible for me to have messed up my firing order? No one has answered this for me!
